Wisconsin rival head coach receives contract extension

The Minnesota Golden Gophers announced a contract extension for head coach P.J. Fleck on Wednesday. The deal adds one year to his original contract, extending it through the 2030 season. According to the Associated Press, Fleck's annual $6 million contract is unchanged with the new deal. The veteran coach enters his ninth season at the helm in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2025. He has a 58-39 overall record, including six bowl appearances and a 4-4 record against the rival Wisconsin Badgers. The Gophers recently evened that record with a 24-7 triumph over the Badgers to close the 2024 season. The program's press release notes that Fleck's winning percentage (.597) is third-best in program history among those with at least 45 career games. Entering his ninth season, he'll soon be one of Minnesota's longest-tenured. Wisconsin will close its 2025 season on the road in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Nov. 29. After losing all three trophy games for the first time in program history (Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota), by a combined score of 110-42, it goes without saying that the Badgers reclaiming Paul Bunyan's Axe would go a long way toward redirecting the program's trajectory in a positive direction. There's something about a perfectly set summer table. A chilled bottle of Sancerre, fresh sliced peaches, maybe a burrata if I'm feeling cheeky. And then a fly lands directly on the watermelon mint salad and, suddenly, it's personal. That was my life before I discovered these weird little spinning blade gadgets that now live permanently on every outdoor table I touch. They're the AMIAEDU Fly Fans, they look like mini helicopter prototypes, and they are shockingly effective. The soft, flexible blades twirl gently (and silently), creating just enough air disturbance to make flies think twice about ruining your al fresco moment. They don't kill anything, they just repel — like Axe body spray. Right now, these tiny heroes are 32% off for Prime Day, and I'm telling you: they are the unsung MVPs of summer hosting. I bring them everywhere — barbecues, picnics, patio dinners — and every time someone asks 'Wait…do those actually work?' I just gesture wordlessly to the pristine charcuterie board. The proof is in the prosciutto. Advertisement Amazon Each AMIAEDU Fly Fan is battery-powered (or USB rechargeable, depending on the model) and designed with holographic blades that catch the light in a way that bugs naturally avoid. They're safe to touch, fit discreetly on any table, and create a 360° fly-free zone around your food and drinks. Light, portable, and blissfully quiet, they're the lazy girl's answer to bug control — no zapping, no swatting, just chill vibes and uninterrupted appetizers. $6 Million College Football Head Coach Lands Extension Through 2030

$6 Million College Football Head Coach Lands Extension Through 2030 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Golden Gophers football program is sticking with its guy. Head coach P.J. Fleck has secured a contract extension that will keep him in Minneapolis through the 2030 season, with his annual salary set at approximately $6 million. It's a big commitment, but one the Gophers seem confident in with good reason. Advertisement Fleck has been at the helm since 2017 and has turned the program into a consistent presence in the Big Ten conversation. He holds a 56-39 overall record and boasts a 6-0 record in bowl games. That kind of postseason success is rare, especially for a program that hadn't seen this kind of stability in decades. The 2024 season was another solid chapter in Fleck's tenure. The Gophers finished 8-5 overall, including a 5-4 mark in Big Ten play. Along the way, they delivered some eye-opening wins, most notably upsetting the No. 11 USC Trojans at home and going on the road to knock off the No. 24 Illinois Fighting Illini. Minnesota also reclaimed Paul Bunyan's Axe from Wisconsin, putting an end to the Badgers' 23-year bowl streak in the process. The Gophers closed the year by knocking off the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, adding yet another trophy to Fleck's growing collection. Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck.© Erin Bormett / Argus Leader via Imagn Content Services, LLC Beyond the wins and bowl victories, the 44-year-old coach has become the face of a culture shift at Minnesota. He has developed NFL-ready talent, with 17 players drafted into the NFL since 2020. Fleck also enhanced the program's academic reputation with 10 Academic All-Americans since his arrival. Advertisement He's also the only coach in modern program history to lead the Gophers to multiple nine-win seasons, including an 11-win campaign in 2019 that tied the school's best finish since 1904. This extension isn't just about past Fleck's success, as it shows the school's trust in his vision for the future. The university clearly believes Fleck is the guy to keep the momentum going, and at this point, he's done plenty to earn that faith. With the Big Ten evolving and the college football landscape shifting rapidly, Minnesota is betting big on stability, and Fleck gives the Gophers their best chance moving forward. The Wisconsin Badgers play in two of The Athletic's top college football rivalries

The Wisconsin Badgers participate in some of the greatest rivalries in college football, according to The Athletic's Scott Dochterman. Specifically, Wisconsin's annual matchup against Iowa slotted in at No. 22 in his recent ranking, while the famous battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe, Wisconsin's rivalry vs. Minnesota, was up at No. 10. The Badgers and Hawkeyes, first, have been playing since 1894, two years before the Big Ten Conference was initially founded. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 49-47-2, although Iowa has won the last three matchups and four of the last five. The last meeting was an evening to forget for Badgers fans -- Iowa won 42-10 thanks to 329 team rushing yards, including 135 yards and three touchdowns from star running back Kaleb Johnson. The storied Big Ten programs are set to meet in Madison this year on Oct. 11. The matchup will be the 99th in the series' history. That rivalry and lengthy series fall short, only when compared to Wisconsin's annual battle with neighboring rival Minnesota. The Badgers and Gophers have met 134 times, dating back to 1890. Those numbers make it the oldest and most-played rivalry in college football. Amazingly, the all-time series is tied 63-63-8. Minnesota has won three of the last four matchups over Wisconsin, including a 24-7 triumph at Camp Randall Stadium to close the 2024 season. That result ensured the Badgers' first non-bowl season since 2001. Wisconsin's rivalry games are among the longest and most played in the sport. But according to Dochterman, they don't quite measure up to Florida vs. Florida State (No. 9), Ohio State vs. Penn State (No. 8), Miami vs. Florida State (No. 7), Nebraska vs. Oklahoma (No. 6), USC vs. Notre Dame (No. 5), Army vs. Navy (No. 4), Oklahoma vs. Texas (No. 3), Auburn vs. Alabama (No. 2) and Michigan vs. Ohio State (No. 1). Article content Barrel racer Anita Ellis is also feeling the love of the Stampede, because she, too, has already clinched a spot on this year's Championship Sunday roster. Article content For the second straight day Saturday, Idaho's Ellis was the only cowgirl to run the cloverleaf in under 17 seconds. Article content Of course, that made the Stampede rookie a go-round winner on consecutive days to give her $14,000 and the coveted early advancement to the final day next week. Article content 'I feel like I can just relax now and have a good time — like let the nerves settle a little bit and just have a great time here,' Ellis said. 'It changes my mindset a little bit. I might run my colt that's a little less experienced (Sunday) … give him a chance to be in front of a big crowd and see how that goes.' Article content It's been nine-year-old Axe getting her around the track — first, in 16.89 seconds, and then, in 16.96s — for the two respective victories Friday and Saturday. Article content Article content 'Axe had surgery on his spine (last year) just to give him another chance, because he's such a talented, awesome horse,' said Ellis, who earned her spot for 2025 through the Calgary qualifier in June. 'Axe came back a little slow … but towards the end of the year, he was coming back to himself. Article content Article content A few other rodeo stars are on the cusp of Championship Sunday, with little in the way on Day 3 of keeping them from advancing to next week's final. Bareback artist Cole Franks won Saturday's go-round with 90 points on Bucking Knight to give him $12,500 through two shows. Tie-down roper and fellow Texan John Douch won Day 2 with a 7.2-second run to net him $12,000 heading into Sunday. And Scott Guenthner of Provost, Alta., posted a 3.8-second time in Saturday's steer wrestling to push him to $12,500 … It's a battle in saddle bronc after Kansas bull-dogger Weston Patterson rode Hotel Acres to Saturday's win with an 88.5-point score. Wyoming's Brody Cress, with $11,500, and California's Lefty Holman, with $11,000, are just ahead of Patterson, with $10,250, but the trio is not yet clear of the field heading into the third-and-final day of Pool A competition … In breakaway roping, it was Oklahoma's Taylor Munsell with a swift 2.6-second run to capture the Day 2 top prize. Stay tuned for a wild finish in the new event Sunday … Clay Greenslade, of Strathmore, Alta., earned the highest mark of novice bareback so far with his 85-point ride aboard Harry Money on Saturday. But Texan talent Kash Loyd leads the event with 162.5 total points with just Sunday's show left to crown a champ … Day 3 of the rodeo goes Sunday at GMC Stadium (1:30 p.m.), marking the final day of Pool A competition.
