Taipei Open: Unnati Hooda, Ayush Shetty to feature in semifinals
Taipei [Taiwan], May 10 (ANI): Indian shuttlers Unnati Hooda and Ayush Shetty will be in action during the semifinals of the Taipei Open on Saturday. Both these young stars will be aiming to go one step further in their chase for a first Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour title. Ayush, competing in the men's singles, got the better of seventh-seeded Brian Yang of Canada 16-21, 21-19, 21-14 in the quarter-finals. The match lasted one hour and 11 minutes, as per The 20-year-old shuttler defeated former world number one Kidambi Srikanth in the round of 16 after getting the better of third-seeded Lee Chia-hao of Chinese Taipei in his opener. This will be world No. 44 Ayush Shetty's second semi-final appearance this year. He had also made the semi-finals of the Orleans Masters Super 300 in March after memorably upstaging former world champion Loh Kean Yew in the round of the semi-finals, Ayush will play top-seed Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei, who accounted for Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah of Indonesia in his top-eight fixture. Meanwhile, Unnati, 53rd in the badminton rankings for women's singles players, won her quarter-final match against Chinese Taipei's world No. 65 Hung Yi-Ting. The 17-year-old Indian shuttler took 52 minutes to secure a 21-8, 19-21, 21-19 victory. She will take on top-seeded Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan in the semi-finals. Unnati, Ayush move into semis of Taipei Open
Taipei: Young Indian shuttlers Ayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda continued to impress at the Taipei Open Super 300 badminton tournament, beating their respective rivals in tough three-game contests to progress to semifinals of men's and women's singles events here on Friday. Taking the court first, Unnati, the 2022 Odisha Masters and 2023 Abu Dhabi Masters champion, fought hard for 52 minutes to get the better of local shuttler Hung Yi-Ting 21-8 19-21 21-19 in the women's singles quarterfinals. Earlier, the 17-year-old Indian, ranked 53rd in the world as against her opponent's 65th, made short work of another Taipei shuttler Lin Sih Yun 21-12 21-7 in the round of 16. She will next face top seed Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan. The Japanese beat Hsiang Lin of Taipei 17-21 21-8 21-17 in another quarterfinal. The 20-year-old Ayush, a 2023 World Junior Championships bronze medallist, who overcame senior pro Kidambi Srikanth in a hard-fought second-round clash, stunned Canada's seventh seed Brian Yang 16-21 21-19 21-14 in a contest that lasted for one hour and 11 minutes to move to the last four stage. The rising Indian, who had stunned All England Championships runner-up Lee Chia Hao in the opening round, will next take on the winner of the other quarterfinal match between top seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei and Indonesia's Moh Zaki Ubaidillah.

The 17-year-old Unnati defeated World No. 65 Hung Yi-Ting of Chinese Taipei 21-8, 19-21, 21-19 in 52 minutes to reach the last-four stage of a Super 300 event for the second time in her career. She has lost to P. V. Sindhu in the semifinals of the Syed Modi India International last year. World No. 53 Unnati, the 2022 Odisha Masters and 2023 Abu Dhabi Masters champion, will next face top seed and World No. 8 Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan for a place in the final.
