11th National Conference of Women in Police held in the city
The goal of 33% of women in the police department will be achieved by the Tamil Nadu Police Department soon, B. Bala Naga Devi, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Economic Offences Wing, said here on Wednesday.
While speaking at the 11th National Conference of Women in Police, she said, 'The first batch of women was recruited in the Tamil Nadu Police in 1973, comprising one sub inspector of police, one head constable and 20 police constables. And as on January 1, 2025, there are 26,589, women police personnel serving in various ranks in the [Tamil Nadu] Police Department.'
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, who inaugurated the conference, highlighted the efforts taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs to improve the women's safety across the country, through its Women Safety Division. He noted that women police personnel will have to be provided basic facilities at the workplace.
Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Director General, Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), said, this national conference of women was started in 2002 and it is being organised at the interval of every two years. 'Women in the police force have additional challenges to face due to high expectations regarding professional responsibilities, along with the equally demanding personal front,' he said.
Shankar Jiwal, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, Seema Agarwal, DGP, Director of Fire and Rescue Service and Sandeep Rai Rathore, DGP Training were also present at the event.
To commemorate 50 years of women in Tamil Nadu Police, the State police department is hosting this conference and it is held on 14-15 May.
