BAFTA TV Awards leaves viewers 'disgusted and outraged' as legendary star is snubbed from In Memoriam tributes - but all isn't as it seems

BAFTA TV Awards left viewers 'disgusted and outraged' after a legendary star was snubbed from In Memoriam tributes on Sunday evening. Actress Dame Maggie Smith, who is best known for roles in the likes of Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, passed away aged 89 on September 27 2024. During the prestigious television awards, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday, a number of much-loved stars were paid tribute to. Michael Moseley, The Bill's Roberta Taylor, Drag Race UK star The Vivienne and American actor Richard Chamberlain were among those who were included. Broadcaster Henry Kelly, Coronation Street 's Timothy West and Brian Murphy were also spoken about. However Maggie wasn't included. Many of those watching at home to take to X, formerly known as Twitter, to point it out and share their upset. One said on the social media platform: '@BAFTA - unless I missed it, Dame Maggie Smith not on your list of those departed in tonight's award show. I'd say she was a lot more worthy of mention than some of those also-rans.' '#BAFTAS no mention of Dame Maggie Smith when remembering those who died in the last year. Shame on BAFTA.' 'Where was Dame Maggie Smith's acknowledgement in roll of honour?' '@BBCOne @BAFTA ….. where was Dame Maggie Smith in the remembrance section? Dame Maggie Smith how on earth could the BBC miss that one shameful.' '@BAFTA why no mention of Dame Maggie Smith in tonight's memoriam section???' Another pointed out: 'Bafta TV Awards Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright, snubbed Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright, even if they are know mostly for film/theatre. 'They did a lot of TV, especially in the early days when they did plays on TV and period dramas especially Shakespeare. 'Maggie Smith was in iconic Downton Abbey. Plowright has a Golden Globe and Emmy for TV!' However it has been highlighted that late Maggie and Joan were paid tribute to at the Bafta Film Awards in Memoriam in February. Back in September, Larkin and Stephens, Maggie's sons from her first marriage, said in their statement: 'It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. 'An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. 'We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days. 'We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.' Among the first to pay tribute was her friend Gyles Brandreth, who said: 'The saddest news: the death of Dame Maggie Smith marks the end of a golden era and a quite extraordinary life. 'She was a truly great actress, 'one of the greats' and simply the best company: wise, witty, waspish, wonderful. One of a kind in every way and consequently irreplaceable.' British theatre owner and producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh told the PA news agency: 'It is with enormous sadness that today, British theatre has lost one of its greatest stars - the incomparable Dame Maggie Smith. 'Many of Maggie's finest performances have been on the stages of theatres now in my care - one of the dress circle boxes in the Sondheim Theatre is proudly named after her. 'Over the decades, I have been privileged to see many of her unforgettable performances from her early days in revue, in the late-50s. 'Whatever she was in, every line was electric - she was the master of the zinger. 'I, and everyone at Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, salute a truly great artist. Maggie was a brilliant original who can never be replaced or ever forgotten.' 2025 BAFTA TV AWARD WINNERS AT A GLANCE Drama Series - Blue Lights (BBC One) Limited Drama - Mr Bates vs the Post Office (ITV1) International - Shogun (Disney+) - WINNER Scripted Comedy - Alma's Not Normal (BBC Two) Entertainment - Would I Lie To You? BAFTA TV Awards 2025: Post Office drama and Mr Loverman among big winners

Mr Bates Vs The Post Office and Mr Loverman were among the big winners at this year's BAFTA TV awards - with Danny Dyer and Ruth Jones picking up comedy prizes. After Mr Bates was named the winner of the TV BAFTA for best limited drama, ITV was also given a special award for commissioning a show that "brought dynamic change". The four-part series, which aired in January 2024, depicted how former subpostmasters and subpostmistresses were held liable by the Post Office for financial discrepancies thrown up by its computerised accounting system, Horizon - shining a light on one of the widest miscarriages of justice in UK legal history. Producer Patrick Spence said the show could never have been made without ITV, as well as the journalists who covered the wrongful convictions, and those who campaigned about the scandal. "Our show didn't change the law, the people of this nation did that," he said. Mr Bates stars Toby Jones and Monica Dolan missed out on prizes in the acting categories, with Marisa Abela named best actress for her performance in Industry and Lennie James named best actor for Mr Loverman, a series based on the novel of the same name by Booker Prize winner Bernadine Evaristo. Both winners seemed shocked to receive the gongs, with first-time nominee Abela saying: "Oh my god, I really wasn't expecting that at all... This is insane." James described the win as a "fantastic honour". Earlier in the night, his co-star Ariyon Bakare took home the prize for best supporting actor, while Baby Reindeer's Jessica Gunning picked up the gong for best supporting actress. Elsewhere, Dyer got one of the night's biggest cheers as his first ever BAFTA was announced - the award for male performance in a comedy, for his role in Sky's Mr Bigstuff - while Jones's final performance as Nessa in the long-awaited Gavin & Stacey: The Finale earned her the female comedy performance gong. Accepting his prize, Dyer said "the acting was so bad it was funny", before he swore several times despite being warned about the rules. He also thanked his family, and writer and actor Ryan Sampson, who he called the "best thing to come out of Rotherham". "I'm not going to lie this is immense," said Jones as she collected her award. "The person I would like to thank most his my dear, dear talented friend James Corden." She said without British actor Corden, her co-creator and co-star, "Vanessa Shanessa Nessa' Jenkins would not exist". 2:00 Wins for other shows included best drama for Blue Lights, best soap for EastEnders, best scripted comedy for Alma's Not Normal, best entertainment performance for Joe Lycett's Late Night Lycett, and best entertainment programme for Would I Lie To You? This year's BAFTA Fellowship, the highest accolade given by the organisation, in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television, was presented to broadcaster Kirsty Wark for her "unwavering dedication and unmatched legacy in the world of news and current affairs broadcasting". Two new categories celebrating children's television were also introduced this yearm with CBeebies As You Like It at Shakespeare's Globe taking home the inaugural prize for best children's scripted, and Sky's Disability and Me (FYI Investigates) winning the non-scripted prize. The main ceremony, which was hosted by actor and presenter Alan Cumming at London's Royal Festival Hall, came two weeks after the BAFTA craft ceremony for technical awards - where Baby Reindeer, Rivals and Slow Horses each picked up two prizes.

BAFTA TV Awards 2025: MAFS UK star Ella Morgan makes powerful red carpet appearance as she stands up for trans rights with fashion statement

MAFS UK star Ella Morgan was one of the first celebrities to take to the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet on Sunday - and she made a powerful statement. The TV personality, 31, looked sensation as she arrived at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall to celebrate the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises. Ella turned heads in a black figure-hugging strapless fishtail gown, complete with a huge white ruffled skirt and elegant gloves. But it was her handbag that really drew attention, as the star, who is transgender, proudly displayed a powerful message written on the accessory. 'Trans men are men,' was scrawled across the black handbag as Ella used her stunning carpet appearance to stand up for trans rights through the fashion statement. The star-studded evening will see a slew of celebrities take home awards celebrating excellence in TV, as well as a line-up of standout performances. Global music stars Jessie J and Tom Grennan are both set to put on a show at the ceremony, with powerhouse Jessie singing The Award Goes To as her first TV performance in six years. Meanwhile, multi-platinum popstar Tom will play his brand new track Full Attention, in a TV exclusive. Both performances will air during the awards ceremony on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 11 May at 7pm. In addition, BAFTA has confirmed award-winning concert violinist and social media sensation Esther Abrami will be performing Apple Tree for the In Memoriam tribute. Speaking about her performance, Jessie J said: 'I haven't sung on British television in years. What a way to come back, it's an honour. But who will the award go to, that's the question.' Meanwhile, Tom added: 'It's a real honour to have been invited by such a prestigious event as BAFTA to perform in front of so many esteemed actors and creatives.' For the first time, Scottish actor, writer, producer and presenter Alan Cumming will host the glitzy eremony. Emma Baehr, Executive Director of Awards & Content at BAFTA, said: 'We're delighted that Alan Cumming will be hosting this year's BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises. In terms of other nominations, Strictly Come Dancing has been snubbed of a nomination for the first time in the show's 20-year history. In the Limited Drama category, Baby Reindeer will face ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which was based on one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, where hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system. Mr Bates vs The Post Office received a total of six nominations, while Disney series Rivals and Apple TV's Slow Horses also had the same amount of nods. Ant and Dec, The Traitors and Stacey Solomon's Sort Your Life Out are among the nominees for best entertainment performance. A total of 21 out of 44 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA Television Awards nomination. Soap star Danny Dyer is among the group who have received their first Bafta nomination in the best male comedy performance category for his role in Mr Bigstuff. In the prestigious best drama category, crime dramas Blue Lights and Sherwood will take on superhero series Supacell and acclaimed period drama Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light. Jane Millichip, CEO of Bafta, said: '2024 was a standout year for television, testified by the 134 brilliant programmes nominated by BAFTA members. 'The power of television to drive national conversation, to tap into the stories of public interest, and to inspire societal change, is second to none. And to do this through every genre is even more impressive. 'The drama of sport, the truth of fiction, the humanity of documentary, the poignancy of comedy, serious entertainment – this year's nominees reflect every aspect of the human condition. 'UK television is at the top of its game, and it is a privilege at Bafta to showcase the work of our incredibly talented nominees at the Bafta Television Craft Awards and Bafta Television Awards with P&O Cruises. Tune into BBC One and BBC iPlayer on May 11, not only to find out who wins, but to inspire your next watchlist.'
