Habitat for Humanity develops new neighborhood in Bay County

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Bay Building Industries Association's Parade of Homes is coming to a close. The weekend-long home showcase, June 6-8, connected community members with BBIA's premier builders and industry professionals. This year, a Habitat for Humanity home is featured in the lineup. Marking the start of something much bigger. This home isn't just a part of the parade of homes. It's the very first of 15 planned houses in a brand new Habitat for Humanity subdivision. And it's turning heads all for the right reasons. Built with volunteer labor, the Habitat for Humanity home stands alongside high-end model houses on this year's tour. But its purpose is different. Providing safe, affordable housing for a local family in need. 'We have homeowners out there that are in dire straits with some of the conditions that they're living in. And of course, they have to apply. And there are some requirements there. They also have to put in 500 hours of sweat equity. That doesn't necessarily mean that they have to do it all themselves. They can get their family to put in contributing hours as well. But it's a great opportunity,' said Habitat for Humanity Bay County board member Travis Herr. Bay Building Industries Association begins 46th annual Parade of Homes And for families on the waiting list, walking through this home as part of the parade is a powerful reminder that their future is under construction. One wall, one room, one opportunity at a time. 'I am somebody that moved around a lot. So this is the longest I've ever been somewhere else. And I think about the ability for total longevity for my son's sake is something beautiful because there is something to be said about building a community and family and laying roots,' future Habitat for Humanity homeowner Samantha Douglass said. Bay County Historical Society hosts annual Pioneer Day The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house located just off Tyndall Parkway is the nonprofit's first experience in creating an entire neighborhood from the ground up. The home's dedication is set for June 26. If you would like to donate to Habitat for Humanity or for more information, click . Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bay Building Industries Association begins 46th annual Parade of Homes

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Bay Building Industries Association or BBIA's 'Parade of Homes' begins on Friday. Builders can enter one of their homes into the showcase to display their work. Coastal Classic Homes was selected to build the 'Scholarship Home' this year. This means builders donate their time to build the home at no cost. BBIA's vendors then donate materials to help lower the cost of the home, which allows them to raise more money for the scholarship. Over the past 9 years, the Bay Builders Industries Association has given away $187,000 in scholarships to 150 students. It supports the next generation of students entering the construction industry. 'I wanted to be a part of this because it gives back to the community. It supports the students in trying to enter the workforce and into the construction industry. And it's just to be able to serve, give back, and work with the association. It's always been always been an honor,' Coastal Classic Homes President Brian Knox said. It took four and a half months for them to build the 4-bed, 2-bath modern home. They cut the ribbon on Wednesday, and the home is already under contract for someone to move in. The scholarship home is one of 28 stops in this year's parade. There's an incentive for those who stop at all of them. 'We do offer what's called our parade passport. If a person goes to every stop, you can get a specific sticker, each one of the homes or the stops that you go to at the end of the parade, you turn that into Mid-South Lumber, and they're offering two cash prizes of $500. So you would be entered into a possibility to win one of those $500 cash prizes,' Bay Building Industries Association's President Curt Hartog said. The Parade of Homes will continue this weekend. They have homes from Cape San Blas to Panama City Beach. You can find that list of homes Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. BBIA scholarship presentation strengthens workforce

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – 15 local students received $1,000 scholarships Monday to further their educations in the construction field. The Bay Builders Industries Association presented the scholarships to help fill an important need. 'So to receive a scholarship, you have to be pursuing a further education or a career in the construction industry. And it's so important in this area, especially that we grow and support students who want to stay in Bay County and support our industry and help build incredible homes that we all get to build and live in,' Coastal Classic Homes President Brian Knox said. The BBIA has given away $188,000 worth of scholarships over the last 10 years to more than 200 students. The majority of this year's recipients plan to attend or already attend Haney Technical College. 'We are thrilled that BBIA offers this scholarship to our students each and every year. It's beneficial not only to my students but to our community, because at Haney, we actually build the workforce. We have construction programs, we have refactoring programs, all of which become employees of the members of BBIA,' Haney Technical College Director Angela Reese said. Reese said it's rewarding to see the full cycle of the scholarship program with many former recipients graduating from Haney this month. 'Several previous BBIA scholarship recipients will be graduating this time. In fact, this is Haney's largest graduating class in history, so we're very proud of that,' Reese added. The association raises the scholarship money each year during the Parade of Homes. 'These are funded through the sale of our scholarship home. This is a feature home that we build every year as part of our annual parade of homes, and our industry partners from around Bay County. They donate their time, their materials, and we build an incredible home that we sell. And the funds from that, a portion of the funds from that, go to fund these scholarships,' Knox said. This year's scholarship home is located in Southport. The BBIA will unveil it on June 4th to kick off the annual Parade of Homes event. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
