BBIA scholarship presentation strengthens workforce

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – 15 local students received $1,000 scholarships Monday to further their educations in the construction field.
The Bay Builders Industries Association presented the scholarships to help fill an important need.
'So to receive a scholarship, you have to be pursuing a further education or a career in the construction industry. And it's so important in this area, especially that we grow and support students who want to stay in Bay County and support our industry and help build incredible homes that we all get to build and live in,' Coastal Classic Homes President Brian Knox said.
The BBIA has given away $188,000 worth of scholarships over the last 10 years to more than 200 students.
The majority of this year's recipients plan to attend or already attend Haney Technical College.
'We are thrilled that BBIA offers this scholarship to our students each and every year. It's beneficial not only to my students but to our community, because at Haney, we actually build the workforce. We have construction programs, we have refactoring programs, all of which become employees of the members of BBIA,' Haney Technical College Director Angela Reese said.
Reese said it's rewarding to see the full cycle of the scholarship program with many former recipients graduating from Haney this month.
'Several previous BBIA scholarship recipients will be graduating this time. In fact, this is Haney's largest graduating class in history, so we're very proud of that,' Reese added.
The association raises the scholarship money each year during the Parade of Homes.
'These are funded through the sale of our scholarship home. This is a feature home that we build every year as part of our annual parade of homes, and our industry partners from around Bay County. They donate their time, their materials, and we build an incredible home that we sell. And the funds from that, a portion of the funds from that, go to fund these scholarships,' Knox said.
This year's scholarship home is located in Southport. The BBIA will unveil it on June 4th to kick off the annual Parade of Homes event.

FDOT officials hold ground breaking for DuPont Bridge replacement project, talk about the proposed state budget

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Florida Department of Transportation officials made a visit to Bay County on Friday to discuss the future of transportation in the Panhandle. Transportation officials joined local leaders at the DuPont Bridge to celebrate the groundbreaking of the DuPont Bridge replacement project. It is a $350 million project that will include 4 lanes of traffic while adding new sidewalks, bicycle lanes, multi-use paths, and more. It is set to be completed by mid-2030. The current bridge may not have any major issues, but it's reaching the age when things could go wrong. 'We always do maintenance and preservation before we do any new capacity. We spare no expense with our bridges. They're very important to us, and we have a very robust bridge replacement program. It's that strategic moment in time for the DuPont Bridge where it's time to replace it. And I think it's an added benefit with the Tyndall Air Force Base rebuild that we use the opportunity to add that additional capacity to U.S. 98,' FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue said. Bay Building Industries Association begins 46th annual Parade of Homes Tyndall officials say that capacity is needed. Currently, about 3500 service members travel on and off the base daily. 'The bridge really fits into that nicely as we open up new facilities, open up new missions, welcome more people to the base. That bridge is really just going to help facilitate our growth.' Tyndall Commander Col. Chris Bergtholdt said. State officials also attended the Bay County Chamber of Commerce First Friday meeting, where they discussed the future of FDOT and how they have invested more than $382 million in bridge maintenance projects, like the DuPont project, in the past year. They say a lot of their success is due to the fact that they receive more than 70% of their funding from the state. 'There's a whole lot less restrictions with state money. Federal money comes with a lot of caveats. Anything that runs through the U.S. Treasury usually takes a long time to get moving. So we're very lucky when funds are allocated through the state. The DOT has a plan of work. They can go to work immediately. They have lots of projects on the shelves that are shovel-ready. So when we allocate that money, they can go to work right away,' State Representative Griff Griffitts said. State lawmakers are expected to vote on next year's budget by June 16th. The proposed plan will include nearly $15 billion for FDOT. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Bay Building Industries Association begins 46th annual Parade of Homes

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Bay Building Industries Association or BBIA's 'Parade of Homes' begins on Friday. Builders can enter one of their homes into the showcase to display their work. Coastal Classic Homes was selected to build the 'Scholarship Home' this year. This means builders donate their time to build the home at no cost. BBIA's vendors then donate materials to help lower the cost of the home, which allows them to raise more money for the scholarship. Over the past 9 years, the Bay Builders Industries Association has given away $187,000 in scholarships to 150 students. It supports the next generation of students entering the construction industry. 'I wanted to be a part of this because it gives back to the community. It supports the students in trying to enter the workforce and into the construction industry. And it's just to be able to serve, give back, and work with the association. It's always been always been an honor,' Coastal Classic Homes President Brian Knox said. It took four and a half months for them to build the 4-bed, 2-bath modern home. They cut the ribbon on Wednesday, and the home is already under contract for someone to move in. The scholarship home is one of 28 stops in this year's parade. There's an incentive for those who stop at all of them. 'We do offer what's called our parade passport. If a person goes to every stop, you can get a specific sticker, each one of the homes or the stops that you go to at the end of the parade, you turn that into Mid-South Lumber, and they're offering two cash prizes of $500. So you would be entered into a possibility to win one of those $500 cash prizes,' Bay Building Industries Association's President Curt Hartog said. The Parade of Homes will continue this weekend. They have homes from Cape San Blas to Panama City Beach. You can find that list of homes Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Angel Reese responds to WNBA investigation of alleged fan abuse

Angel Reese on Tuesday praised the WNBA for taking up an investigation into alleged abuse aimed at the Chicago Sky player and the way the league and her team have had her back. The WNBA said it was investigating reports of abuse directed towards the second-year forward during Chicago's loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday. Advertisement 'Obviously there's no place in this league for that,' Reese said during media availability on Tuesday. 'I think the WNBA and our team and our organization has done a great job supporting me.' Reese said she has received support from many people across the league following the incident and during the process of the investigation. 'Obviously it's tough, but I think I have a great support system. I'm loved by so many people and ,obviously, in the moment it is hard to hear, but my support system is great,' the 23-year-old added. 'I've gone through so many different things in the past couple of years in my life, but I think just having the support and this love, and being a part of an organization that really supports me and loves me is something I just couldn't imagine not being a part of.' Advertisement Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh gave credit to Reese with how she's dealt with the process. 'She's handled it great. I mean, for her, it's about basketball, so I think that's where her mind is at and for us we want to be as locked in as possible to our game plan and what we want to do moving forward into Thursday,' Marsh said. 'I mean, Angel's a winner. Angel's a competitor, and she wants to be there for her teammates and we're certainly there for her as well.' Reese said she has had a 'great support system' during the process of the investigation. - Grace Smith/IndyStar/Imagn Images/Reuters Marsh added that all those at the franchise will be behind the star second-year player. 'I think that we always want to be there to support each other no matter what we're going through in our personal lives or professional lives. It's the kind of environment that we want to create here. It's who we want to be as individuals and who we want to be as teammates.' Advertisement The WNBA said after the alleged incident that it 'strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms,' while the Fever said they are helping the league with the investigation. Indiana's star guard Caitlin Clark issued a similar message after a Fever practice on Monday. 'There's no place for that in our game, there's no place for that in society,' Clark, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, told reporters after practice on Monday. 'Certainly, we want every person who comes into our arena, whether player or fan, to have a great experience,' Clark added. 'I appreciate the league doing that (the investigation). I appreciate that the Fever organization has been at the forefront of that since day one. The investigation we'll leave up to them to find anything and take the proper action if so.'
