Mediator to repay BD2,000 in friends' dispute

A mediator trusted to resolve a money row between two mates has been ordered by the Civil Court to return BD2,000 he kept for himself. The dispute began when one friend owed BD4,000 to another. He attempted to pay half, but the creditor insisted on full repayment, and the pair disagreed about the deadline. To settle the matter, the debtor handed BD2,000 to a third friend, expecting this intermediary to deliver the money and put an end to the quarrel. Requests Instead, the trusted middleman kept the sum and refused to return it, despite repeated requests. With the situation at a standstill, the claimant and debtor confronted the mediator directly. The debtor stated clearly he wanted the funds passed on. The mediator agreed, promising to withdraw and deliver the money the next Sunday

Hotel to repay BD4,140 after failing to deliver paid services

TDT | Manama After paying BD25,000 for paperwork that never arrived, two clients have won just BD4,140 from one of Bahrain's best-known hotels in a ruling by the High Court of Appeal. The hotel had agreed to arrange guarantor permits and temporary residency documentation. While the full fee was paid upfront, the services were not fully delivered. Represented by lawyer Essam Al Tayyib, the clients took legal action to recover the value of what was left undone. A lower court threw out their claim but the Appeal Court reversed that decision after Al Tayyib submitted a letter signed by the hotel's own representative admitting the debt and proposing a partial settlement. Judges treated this as an implied acknowledgement of both the contract and the amount owed. Al Tayyib argued the initial ruling failed to take key evidence into account. He referred to the letter dated 11 August 2024 which the hotel had never denied. Under Bahraini law, silence on such a document adds weight to its content.

Roku lands broadcast deal to deliver the Eagles' definitive Super Bowl story

Roku secures a deal with NFL Films and Dan Silver's BD4 to release the Eagles' definitive Super Bowl documentary. If you're like most, you have probably already spent more money than you planned to on Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl memorabilia. Oh well... You only live once. We waited a long time for that first Lombardi Trophy in 2018, and now we have seen the Birds win two. Why not live a little? Why not party like rock stars? Philly has turned the page and is now looking ahead to another season. It took a while, but they finally received their Super Bowl rings. Wouldn't you know it? Jalen Hurts has no plans of wearing his. Oh well... Maybe, once his playing days are over, he can enjoy another cigar, kick his feet up, and enjoy some of his accomplishments. That doesn't mean the rest of us can't enjoy that celebration a bit longer, though. Fans and the media can look as far ahead or as far back as they want. They won't be suiting up for any games this year. NFL Films will partner with Roku to release the Eagles' Super Bowl documentary Here's something of note. The Hollywood Reporter shared an exclusive on the first day of Eagles training camp. Roku, NFL Films, and Dan Silver's BD4 are partnering to release Super Bowl Champions: The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles. This is a documentary described as the "definitive" documentary about the 2024-25 championship-winning season. 'We are excited to produce the definitive story of the Philadelphia Eagles' incredible 2024 season, which culminated with a victory in Super Bowl LIX. We thank Dan Silver and BD4 for bringing this film to a tremendous partner in the Roku Channel, and we look forward to sharing the Eagles' championship run with their audience.' Those were the words of Jessica Boddy, NFL Films vice president of commercial operations and business affairs. Roku's head of sports, Joe Franzetta, states the following. "We're thrilled to be the home for 'Super Bowl Champions The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles' and can't wait to give our users an exclusive look into the Philadelphia Eagles' unforgettable season. Roku Sports aims to create personalized viewing experiences for fans with their favorite teams and leagues, so we're excited to use the power of our platform to connect audiences with this tremendous NFL Films and BD4 documentary." The documentary debuts on Friday, July 25. No die-hard football fan needs a lecture on the fantastic job NFL Films does. The release, at the time of this story's release, is still a ways away, and it feels like this one will be worthy of Oscar consideration. Buckle up. Mark those calendars. This one should be a fun watch.

Secret loans, soaring deficit spark alarm in audit report

Ministries and stateowned bodies in Bahrain took out nearly BD4 billion in unrecorded loans last year, as the national budget deficit ballooned to BD774 million — more than four times the previous year — acc o r d i n g to the National Audit Office's 2024 annual report. The findings, set to be debated in Parliament next Tuesday, are part of the 66th report by the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee. The report paints a troubling picture of financial mismanagement, weak oversight, and widespread rule-breaking across government entities. The audit shows Bahrain's public debt rose by 7% to BD17.9 billion in 2023. However, this figure does not include BD3.9 billion in loans taken by ministries and government bodies that were never added to the official debt register. BD47 million unaccounted Other concerns raised include the failure of some agencies to transfer fees and earnings to the state treasury, resulting in nearly BD47 million going unaccounted for. Meanwhile, government spending continued to rise — ordinary expenses climbed 6% to BD3.69 billion, and project spending jumped 19% to BD277 million — while oil revenue fell 16%, dragging total income down to BD3.2 billion. Serious lapses @ Gulf Air The audit reviewed 85 government entities. Gulf Air was singled out for repeated operational losses and failure to meet its targets in 2022 and 2023. On one day alone, it cancelled 178 flights due to low profitability. The committee noted serious lapses in how the airline tracked ticket sales via partners, and failures to list flights online, missing out on potential revenue. Bapco bypasses approval Bapco Energies, the stateowned energy group, was also criticised for bypassing required approvals, altering contract terms mid-way, and skipping key paperwork. One price change added BD95,000 to a deal, while other errors included ordering stock it already had and not cancelling unused orders. Mismanagement @ Sunni Waqf At the Sunni Waqf Directorate, investigators found long-vacant properties, rent arrears left uncollected, and leases not updated in decades. In one case, an idle property cost the state BD159,000 in lost rent. Delayed care @ hospitals The audit also highlighted long waiting times in public hospitals, with some patients waiting three to eight months for specialist care. Meanwhile, annual spending on treatment abroad remained high, averaging BD14 million over the past four years. The National Health Regulatory Authority came under fire for allowing foreign workers into roles reserved for Bahrainis and applying rules inconsistently. Political societies were also under scrutiny. Out of 12 groups, 10 were examined, and one was found to have violated regulations. Just 38% of earlier recommendations in this area were fully followed. 1,010 recommendations The report contains 1,010 recommendations, of which nearly 85% were being acted on or already in progress during the initial review. A later follow-up found that 90.3% had been taken up or were underway. The parliamentary committee, which held 12 meetings and spoke to a wide range of officials, said several government bodies, including the Interior Ministry, the Customs Directorate, the National Ambulance Centre and the National Revenue Office, failed to respond to requests for information.
