Case against youngsters dancing to DJ music near Kedarnath shrine

Dehradun: A case has been registered against a group of youngsters for playing DJ music, dancing and creating a disturbance near the Kedarnath temple, drawing strong condemnation from priests who called the act "disrespectful", police said on Tuesday. A purported video of the incident, which took place on May 2 before the shrine reopened, surfaced online recently, but the individuals involved in incident have not yet been Sati, general secretary of Uttarakhand Char Dham Teerth Purohit Mahapanchayat, said such acts went against religious beliefs and traditions. "Such incidents have been reported in the past too. Char Dham is not for these purposes. The pilgrimage is not for entertainment. People come here to offer prayers and such acts do not send the right message," Sati said. He and other priests urged the state to take strict action. "If a strict step is not taken, others will also behave in the same way. Devotees need to keep in mind that playing music and photography is not allowed near the temple premises," he confirmed that the video was recorded before the doors of Kedarnath temple were opened for the season. Following a complaint by Girish Dewali, in-charge officer of BKTC at Kedarnath, Sonprayag police registered a case under BNS section 298 (defiling a place of worship with intent or knowledge of insult to a religion) against unknown police said they were investigating the matter and working to identify those involved using various social media platforms. They appealed to the public not to circulate the video, citing concerns about the sanctity of incident is not isolated. In 2023, a woman was filmed throwing currency notes on the Shivling inside Kedarnath temple, which led to public outrage and an official probe. In 2021, influencer Aarti Sahu was forced to apologise after posting a dance reel shot in front of a temple. The Kedarnath-Badrinath Temple Committee banned the filming of reels around temple premises after a video of a couple proposing in front of the shrine was shared widely on social media.

Badri-Kedar Temple Committee gets new prez; 2 deputies appointed for the first time

1 2 Dehradun: In a move aimed at improving management and coordination of the Char Dham yatra amid increasing pilgrim numbers, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), for the first time, has appointed two vice-presidents along with a new president, following directives from chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Hemant Dwivedi of Pauri Garhwal has been named the new president of BKTC, while Rishi Prasad Sati from Chamoli and Vijay Kaparwan from Rudraprayag have been appointed as vice-presidents. Officials said that the inclusion of representatives from Pauri, Chamoli, and Rudraprayag — districts closely associated with the Char Dham shrines — will help decentralise decision-making and enhance coordination on the ground. The new leadership is expected to fast-track development work, streamline yatra arrangements, and ensure better facilities for pilgrims. Dhami congratulated the newly appointed office-bearers and expressed confidence in their ability to bring energy and vision to the committee. "This initiative is a significant step towards stronger and more transparent management of the sacred sites of Badrinath and Kedarnath," he said.

Kedarnath opens for devotees; over 12,000 attend grand ceremony

The portals of Himalayan temple Kedarnath were opened on Friday (May 2, 2025), with more than 12,000 pilgrims attending the ceremony. The gates of the temple located at a height of more than 11,000 ft were opened at 7 a.m., Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) officials said. The Himalayan temple was adorned with 108 quintals of flowers of 54 varieties, including roses and marigolds, brought from different countries like Nepal, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Of the four Char Dham temples Kedarnath, which is also the 11th Jyotirlinga, pulls the largest crowd of devotees. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is the third temple in the Char Dham circuit to be opened after the winter break. Gangotri and Yamunotri temples were opened on April 30 and Badrinath will open on May 4, 2025. The process of opening the gates of Kedarnath began at 5 a.m., BKTC media in-charge Harish Gaur said. Rawal (Chief Priest) Bhimashankar Ling, priest Bagesh Ling, Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal, Rudraprayag's District Magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar, BKTC Chief Executive Officer Vijay Prasad Thapliyal, Tirtha priest Srinivas Posti, religious leaders and Vedpathis entered the temple from the east gate and participated in the worship of the gate of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple before the portals were opened. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also attended the opening ceremony and was the first to perform a puja at the temple after the opening of its gates praying for the well-being and prosperity of all. The temple, which is visited every year by lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad, remains closed during the winter months. A new feature for the pilgrims in Kedarnath this time would be a grand 'aarti' on the lines of Ganga Aarti in Varanasi, Haridwar and Rishikesh to be performed at the confluence of the Mandakini and Saraswati rivers near the temple, BKTC CEO Vijay Thapliyal said. All arrangements have been made for the aarti with ramps erected on three sides of the confluence for devotees to view the scene, he said.
