The BLAST [Free Wheel Maillechort] is Ulysse Nardin's boldest creation yet
Ulysse Nardin has just revealed one of its most spectacular horological feats to date: the BLAST [Free Wheel Maillechort]. A limited edition of just 50 pieces, this technical marvel blends visual wizardry with mechanical mastery, featuring a gravity-defying dial that seems to suspend time itself. At first glance, the BLAST [Free Wheel Maillechort] looks like a concept watch (nothing like any of the entries in our best watch list). Under a sculpted sapphire glass box – cut from a single block – its dial floats in three-dimensional space, revealing a cluster of flying components that appear to hover without support. There's no dial clutter, no traditional bridges, just pure watchmaking innovation. Powering it all is the UN-176 calibre – a fully in-house movement anchored by the groundbreaking Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement. First introduced in 2015 and still one of the few of its kind, this silicon-based system delivers a consistent force to the balance wheel, ensuring accuracy throughout its seven-day power reserve. That's fuelled by a double-barrel system at 12 o'clock, one of which spins in full view, while its twin works behind the scenes. The tourbillon at 6 o'clock is the real showstopper. Suspended on hair-thin silicon blade springs, it looks like it's levitating. It's a real feat of micro-engineering that took two years to perfect and earned Ulysse Nardin the coveted Tourbillon Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève. The Maillechort dial – an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel – brings a warm metallic sheen and will age beautifully over time, adding personal character to each of the 50 watches. Even the case, a bold 45mm slab of white gold with sharp, sculpted angles, has been laser-etched for a futuristic aesthetic that contrasts with the heritage of its materials. The BLAST is finished with a blue velvet rubber strap and a white gold deployant buckle. The BLAST [Free Wheel Maillechort] is priced at US$126,600 / £111,380. School division goes full BLAST with child-care pilot
A handful of schools in southeast Winnipeg will provide supervision before and after the bell rings for a flat rate of $15 per day, starting this fall. The Louis Riel School Division's BLAST (Before-School, Lunch, and After-School Time) initiative is scheduled to launch on Sept. 4. Eligible families will be able to drop participating children at school as early as 7 a.m. on all days that classes are in session. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS FILES The Louis Riel School Division's BLAST (Before-School, Lunch, and After-School Time) initiative is scheduled to launch on Sept. 4. Child care will also be available after dismissal until 5:30 p.m. Stephen Sobczak said his family could definitely 'work with' the proposed model. 'But I don't want to get my hopes up,' said the father of an incoming Grade 2 student at Niakwa Place School. Sobczak and his wife were among the parents who waited throughout 2024-25 for a child-care spot that never opened; they relied on grandparents to make do. More than half of the families who participated in a recent school division survey, representing 2,936 children, indicated they needed assistance with weekday supervision. Niakwa Place, as well as Archwood School, École Van Belleghem and both elementary schools in Sage Creek — the second of which is scheduled to open in September — were chosen to pilot BLAST and start addressing those needs. 'This is just the start of something much bigger,' said Christian Michalik, superintendent of the division encompassing St. Boniface, River Park South and surrounding communities. The administrative team is planning to make on-site child-care coverage available to kindergarten-to-Grade 6 students to sandwich every school day before the end of 2027. The superintendent said his hope is the daily fee, which will recover staffing, snack and other costs, can be reduced in future. The province has not agreed to subsidize the program at present, he noted. Tricia Bailey Sauvé, who had been a divisional vice-principal, was tapped to oversee the transition from a patchwork of individual school-run child-care programs to a division-wide strategy. The BLAST manager is working on a centralized payment structure, family handbook, code of conduct and specific procedures ahead of back-to-school season. 'Our goal is to support families and to create a safe, fun, and inclusive environment,' Bailey Sauvé wrote in a recent memo to parents who have long competed for limited spots at private and school-run daycares. Daily programming is anticipated to take place indoors and outdoors with play-based learning and socialization as the top priorities. It will not be available on holidays or when schools are closed for teacher professional development. Wednesdays Sent weekly from the heart of Turtle Island, an exploration of Indigenous voices, perspectives and experiences. The blueprint allows private daycares located in schools to continue operating as usual. The division is hiring part-time program assistants and co-ordinators — roles that the superintendent said he anticipates will be filled by support staff, as well as university and high school students — for BLAST. The posted hourly wages are $16.75 and $21.55, respectively. This is the natural next step to tackle a chronic shortage of child-care spaces and lengthy waitlists in the division after its implementation of full-day kindergarten, Michalik said. The division's 30 elementary schools began offering what's often dubbed 'FDK' in 2024-25. The expansion cost approximately $2.6 million. BLAST responds to BESTIA Visa controversy ahead of CS2 Austin major
THE ES TIMES — Tournament organizer BLAST has responded to mounting criticism regarding its recent decision to replace BESTIA with Legacy Esports for the upcoming Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) Major in Austin, Texas. The controversy erupted after the Argentinian team was disqualified due to unresolved visa issues for two of its players. As the story unfolded, I followed the matter closely and was surprised by how quickly tensions escalated. Missed Deadline and Valve Approval According to an official statement from BLAST published via Esports Insider, BESTIA failed to meet the May 21st visa confirmation deadline. The organizer explained that the deadline was 5:00 PM CEST, but at that time, players Martín 'tomaszin' Corna and Luciano 'luchov' Herrera did not yet have valid visas. BLAST added that the decision to exclude BESTIA and replace them had been confirmed by Valve. As expected, this decision did not please fans and some community members. BESTIA Responds Online Immediately after the replacement was announced, BESTIA responded strongly on social media. The team insisted that its players would have visas before the start of the first stage of the tournament on June 3. In a subsequent post, BESTIA accused BLAST of ignoring communication and confirmed that all required documentation had been completed. This stance received widespread support. One of the most prominent supporters was Ilya 'M0NESY' Osipov, a well-known CS2 star, who publicly questioned the validity of the decision. Legacy to Participate in Austin Despite the public outcry, BLAST stood by its decision. It confirmed that Legacy Esports will officially replace BESTIA. Legacy is scheduled to face Chinese team Lynn Vision in the opening round. So far, BLAST has shown no intention of reversing its decision. Its position appears clear: only confirmed visas count toward scheduled interviews or goodwill. BLAST clarifies timeline In its statement, BLAST said it remained in contact with BESTIA throughout the visa process. A representative stated, "We provided numerous follow-ups, support, and updated invitation letters." He added that, as of the May 21 deadline, the required visas had not yet been issued. According to the organizer, BESTIA informed the organizer at 1:20 PM CEST that visas could be obtained by May 26 or 27, following emergency interviews scheduled for May 22 and 23. However, BLAST responded that these were merely interview dates, not confirmed visas. Therefore, the team does not meet the tournament requirements. What's next? Interestingly, BESTIA CEO Alejandro 'PapoMC' Lococo hinted at new developments. He announced on social media that "very important information" would be released on May 22. While the outcome may not change for Austin, the full story is still emerging. I will continue to follow BESTIA's next revelations. Meanwhile, the debate within the community continues as to whether the decision was fair - or hasty. Mehdi Belhamra – Esports and Gaming writer
