Education Dept ‘unaware' of BJP's sweater gift to kids
Shivamogga/DHNS: A quiet distribution of sweaters to government school students by BJP workers in the district has caught the education department, off-guard. Under the Rashtriya Gramin Saksharata Mission, the BJP has taken the initiative to distribute sweaters among government school wards, across the district. While many schools have already received sweaters, students studying between Class 1 and Class 4 are expected by August 15, it has been learnt. When contacted, School Education & Literacy Department Deputy Director Manjunath told DH that he was not aware of the distribution of sweaters to students. But, Thirthahalli Block Education Officer (BEO) Ganesh Y claimed that BJP workers are voluntarily distributing sweaters to 84 government lower primary schools in the taluk and bags to 115 government higher primary schools. 'We are told that MP B Y Raghavendra took the initiative to distribute sweaters and bags. Besides, over 1,000 bags are still pending and they would be distributed to all students,' BEO Ganesh said. Malnad Area Development Board former chairman Gurumurthy, who is a close aide of former chief minister B S Yediyurappa, told DH that MP B Y Raghavendra learned about the Rashtriya Gramin Saksharata Mission. So he took the initiative to distribute sweaters and bags to students of government schools across the district. Speaking to DH, Shivamogga MP B Y Raghavendra said earlier, children of government schools in Northern India were getting sweaters under the scheme. 'When I came to know this, I realised our children in the district were also in need of sweaters, as there will be cold during rainy season,' MP Raghavendra said and added that he took personal interest to distribute sweaters to children of lower primary school, across district. So far, over 69,000 sweaters have been distributed to children, MP queried about non-involvement of school education department, MP alleged that last year a similar initiative (of his) had been projected as the state government's by the department. 'It was projected as if Congress-led government in Karnataka distributed it, while it was being distributed under the scheme,' he added. This forced the MP to direct an NGO to take up responsibilities of distributing sweaters and school bags with the help of party workers. When asked whether this scheme was confined to the district alone, MP Raghavendra said since it was his choice, it was being carried out in district, may be mentioned here that the distribution of sweaters to school children had taken a political turn in Thirthahalli, with BEO Ganesh Y being suspended for alleged protocol. However, he was reinstated, later.

Sigandoor bridge set for July 14 inauguration
Shivamogga: The much-anticipated Sigandoor Bridge, poised to be India's second-largest cable-stayed bridge, will be inaugurated on July 14 in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district. Shivamogga MP B Y Raghavendra announced the inauguration event, which will be led by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. The Rs. 473-crore bridge will span 2.1 kilometres across the Sharavathi River and is also known as the Holebagilu–Kalasa Halli Bridge, featuring a sophisticated cable-stayed design that blends durability with aesthetic appeal. According to sources, its robust construction promises a lifespan of over a century, ensuring long-term benefits for the region. Raghavendra has urged the government to rename it the 'Shri Sigandoor Chowdeshwari Bridge' in honour of the nearby Sigandoor Chowdeshwari Temple, a revered pilgrimage destination. As per sources, the new bridge will drastically reduce travel time by approximately two hours for thousands of devotees visiting the temple, while also boosting tourism in the Malnad region. Taking to social media, Raghavendra shed light on the bridge's dual role as a functional and cultural asset, stating, 'It is a moment of immense pride to share this achievement. The completion of the Sigandoor Bridge is not just an infrastructural accomplishment — it is a symbol of progress and devotion, and I feel deeply fulfilled to be part of this transformation.' According to B Y Raghavendra, this bridge forms part of a broader Rs. 20,000 crore infrastructure push in the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency, encompassing highways and roadways. The July 14 ceremony, expected to draw significant attention, will celebrate this bridge and its promise to elevate Shivamogga's economic and cultural prominence.

Early monsoon affects bridge construction across Sharavathi River
Shivamogga: Early monsoon rains have affected the construction of minor and major bridges across Sharavathi River in Hosanagar and Sagar taluks. The authorities did not anticipate that their crucial time at the end of May would be impacted by rainfall. The nearly completed Sigandur Bridge (Ambaragodlu-Kalasavalli) across the Sharavathi River in Sagar taluk awaits inauguration. While civil works are finished, it needs to be asphalted, which the engineers planned to complete before June 1. The early rain and winds hindered progress. A bridge project of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), valued at Rs 423 crore on the newly added NH stretch (369E) connecting Sagar to Byndoor highway at Marakutika, was scheduled to open in late May or early June. Following delays, Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra announced a mid-June inauguration. Current weather conditions might further postpone the event. Speaking to TOI, NH senior engineer Peer Pasha said despite exceeding the stipulated handover time due to various reasons, particularly rain preventing asphalt drying, the authority would ensure completion by the end of June. The NHAI has also undertaken a multi-crore bridge project at Bekkodi village across Sharavathi River's backwater, on the Ranebennur-Byndoor (766C) highway. Rising river levels forced workers to relocate vehicles to the bank. Additionally, the state govt's two major bridge projects on the Sharavathi — one at Hasirumakki Dam near Sigandur and another at Bilsagar in Hosanagara — have been suspended, officials said.

Centre to consider devpt of Trasi Maravanthe if state sends holistic plan
Udupi: Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union minister of culture and tourism, said on Thursday that the Centre will consider if the state govt submits a holistic plan to develop Trasi-Maravanthe Beach, which has unique geographical features. "I am so glad to be here in this place, which has huge tourism potential. MP BY Raghavendra and other people's representatives requested me to visit this place, which can be developed as a tourist destination with a huge potential. This place, where the backwaters and the beach meet, needs a holistic plan. When the plan comes to us through the state govt, we will certainly consider it," the minister MP BY Raghavendra said that he, along with other elected representatives from Udupi, met Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat a month ago.
