Early monsoon affects bridge construction across Sharavathi River
The nearly completed Sigandur Bridge (Ambaragodlu-Kalasavalli) across the Sharavathi River in Sagar taluk awaits inauguration. While civil works are finished, it needs to be asphalted, which the engineers planned to complete before June 1. The early rain and winds hindered progress.
A bridge project of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), valued at Rs 423 crore on the newly added NH stretch (369E) connecting Sagar to Byndoor highway at Marakutika, was scheduled to open in late May or early June.
Following delays, Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra announced a mid-June inauguration. Current weather conditions might further postpone the event.
Speaking to TOI, NH senior engineer Peer Pasha said despite exceeding the stipulated handover time due to various reasons, particularly rain preventing asphalt drying, the authority would ensure completion by the end of June.
The NHAI has also undertaken a multi-crore bridge project at Bekkodi village across Sharavathi River's backwater, on the Ranebennur-Byndoor (766C) highway. Rising river levels forced workers to relocate vehicles to the bank.
Additionally, the state govt's two major bridge projects on the Sharavathi — one at Hasirumakki Dam near Sigandur and another at Bilsagar in Hosanagara — have been suspended, officials said.

District collector Rajarshi Shah and superintendent of police Akhil Mahajan supervised the evacuation, moving students to the second floor of the building. Officials said Rs 60 lakh has been sanctioned to rebuild the school's collapsed compound wall that allowed water inside. With reservoirs filling up rapidly, roads cut off, and colonies inundated, officials said rescue teams are on standby and urged people in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as the monsoon intensifies. According to the IMD, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, Mahabubabad, Mulugu, and Warangal districts are likely to witness very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Adilabad, Mancherial, Khammam, Siddipet, Jangaon, Suryapet, and several other districts. Heavy rainfall floods rivers in Barwani & Khargone
Barwani: Heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning late on Friday night and early Saturday morning led to flooding of local rivers in Barwani and Khargone resulting in drowning of one person and death of two by lightning strikes. One person was swept away and search for him is still on. The Rupa river passing through Rajpur town of Barwani district was flooded on Saturday morning. A 50-year-old man died while trying to take out goods from the flooded river. Barwani ASP Dheeraj Babbar told TOI that the goods were washed away in the flooded-Rupa river and 50-year-old Gendalal, a resident of Hatbadi, jumped into the river to collect them on Saturday evening but couldn't come out. He was rescued and brought to community health centre Rajpur where he died during treatment. Barwani in-charge Collector Kajal Jawla told TOI that due to the sudden flood in the Rupa river, there were reports of two four-wheelers being washed away when water passed over a small culvert. The meteorological department has issued warnings of heavy showers for several areas across the state. A low-pressure area is currently centered over south Chhattisgarh and nearby regions. An upper air cyclonic circulation associated with it extends up to 7.6 km above sea level and tilts southwestwards with height. This system is expected to gradually weaken as it moves west-northwest, reaching Gujarat by the morning of August 18 as a remnant cyclonic circulation.
