Shoppers warned not to eat bags of leaves sold at Aldi, Lidl and Tesco in listeria update

Supermarkets and retailers have been advised to remove the implicated products from store shelves. Shoppers have been issued an update on the listeria outbreak on certain bags of salad items. The latest recall affects further batches of spinach, rocket and mixed leaves. ‌ The Food Safety Authority (FSAI) has advised that a further five packs from the McCormack Family, alongside Egan's Baby Spinach, have been recalled due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes. The Food Safety Authority (FSA), which issues recall advice to UK consumers, has also published the recall. ‌ It comes after we just recently reported that the the Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed it was "working closely" with the FSAI and local retailers to determine the distribution of these products in Northern Ireland. ‌ Both the McCormack Family Farms and Egan's are brands that can be found in Aldi stores and Dunnes Stores across Ireland, with the former also being supplied to supermarkets Tesco and Lidl. The FSAI warns shoppers that symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. ‌ In rare cases, symptoms can be more severe and cause serious complications for those with weaker immune systems such as pregnant women, babies and the elderly. Following the outbreak, retailers have since been advised to "remove the implicated products from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale." Wholesalers and distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated products and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers. ‌ Meanwhile, for health and safety reasons, shoppers have been urged to consume the affected bags of leaves, but instead to return them for a full refund. It comes after a listeriosis outbreak connected to ready to eat hot meals caused one fatality and a further nine cases, although the FSAI has advised that this is not linked to the McCormack Family recall. One adult died just days after becoming ill from consuming a contaminated ready meal, as supermarket chiefs rushed to withdraw at-risk dishes from shop shelves amid mounting public safety fears. ‌ It was reported that a selection of ready meals by the brand Ballymaguire Foods, which supplies products to both Aldi and Tesco in Ireland, were impacted, although it remains unclear which ready meal the individual consumed before passing away. FSAI recalls spinach and mixed leaves products due to listeria

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said additional batches of spinach and mixed leaves products are being recalled due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes. Wholesalers/distributors are asked to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated products and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers. Caterers should not use the implicated products and consumers are advised not to eat the implicated products The latest update follows recalls on Monday (July 28) of spinach and mixed leaves products. The FSAI added that there is currently no evidence that this food recall is linked with the listeriosis outbreak related to ready-to-heat meals that is currently under investigation. Last week, over 140 specifically prepared meals and side dishes, produced by Ballymaguire Foods, were recalled due to the possible presence of listeria. The FSAI said that symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average 3 weeks but can range between 3 and 70 days.

Shoppers warned of Listeria symptoms after recall sweeps through Irish shops

Shoppers across Ireland are being urged to check their fridges after a major food recall linked to potential Listeria contamination swept through four major supermarkets. A wide range of fresh leaf products sold in Lidl, Aldi, SuperValu and Tesco have been pulled from shelves due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes - a dangerous bacteria that can cause serious illness, especially in vulnerable people. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued an urgent third update to the recall alert yesterday, expanding the list of affected products, which includes various batches of branded spinach, rocket, lettuce and mixed leaves. Retailers have been instructed to remove the affected items immediately and display recall notices at points of sale. Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated products and to return them where possible. Affected products include: SuperValu Spinach 250g – Best before 01/08/2025, 03/08/2025 with batch code 206 Tesco Mild Spinach 350g – Best before 02/08/2025 with batch code 206 Egan's Irish Baby Spinach (sold in Aldi) 250g – Best before 30/07/2025, 31/07/2025, 01/08/2025 with batch code 206 McCormack Family Farms Lettuce (sold in Lidl) 200g - best before 02/08/2025, 03/08//2025, 09/08/2025, 10/08/2025 with batch codes 205, 212 McCormack Family Farms Mixed Leaves (sold in Lidl and Tesco) 75g - Best before 26/07/2025, 27/07/2025, 29/07/2025, 31/07/2025, 01/08/2025, 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025 with batch codes 199, 202, 204, 205, 206, 207 McCormack Family Farms Rocket (sold in Lidl) 75g - Best before 31/07/2025, 03/08/2025 with batch codes 204, 206 McCormack Family Farms Spinach (sold in Lidl) 100g, 200g and 250g - Best before 01/08/2025, 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025, 04/08/2025 with batch codes 205, 206, 207 McCormack Family Farms Energise Mix (sold in Lidl) 100g - Best before 28/07/2025, 29/07/2025, 30/07/2025, 03/08/2025 with batch codes 199, 203, 205 Listeria monocytogenes can cause mild flu-like symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and in more severe cases, serious complications such as meningitis or sepsis. Additional products recalled amid ongoing listeria concerns

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued a new wave of product recalls due to concerns over potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This marks the third set of recalls involving popular salad items available in Irish supermarkets, following the initial detection of Listeria on Monday, July 28. The updated list includes several products with specific best-before dates and batch codes. Shoppers are being urged not to consume any of the affected items. #FoodAlert Update (3) to recall of various branded Spinach and Mixed Leaves products produced by McCormack Family Farms due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes. — FoodSafetyAuthority (@FSAIinfo) August 2, 2025 Recalled Products Include: Egan's Irish Baby Spinach 250g Best before: 30/07/2025, 31/07/2025, 01/08/2025 Batch code: 206 30/07/2025, 31/07/2025, 01/08/2025 206 McCormack Family Farms Lettuce 200g Best before: 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025, 09/08/2025, 10/08/2025 Batch codes: 205, 212 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025, 09/08/2025, 10/08/2025 205, 212 McCormack Family Farms Mixed Leaves 75g Best before: 26/07/2025, 27/07/2025, 29/07/2025, 31/07/2025, 01/08/2025, 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025 Batch codes: 199, 202, 204, 205, 206, 207 26/07/2025, 27/07/2025, 29/07/2025, 31/07/2025, 01/08/2025, 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025 199, 202, 204, 205, 206, 207 McCormack Family Farms Rocket 75g Best before: 31/07/2025, 03/08/2025 Batch codes: 204, 206 31/07/2025, 03/08/2025 204, 206 McCormack Family Farms Spinach (100g, 200g & 250g) Best before: 01/08/2025, 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025, 04/08/2025 Batch codes: 205, 206, 207 01/08/2025, 02/08/2025, 03/08/2025, 04/08/2025 205, 206, 207 McCormack Family Farms Energise Mix 100g Best before: 28/07/2025, 29/07/2025, 30/07/2025, 03/08/2025 Batch codes: 199, 203, 205 28/07/2025, 29/07/2025, 30/07/2025, 03/08/2025 199, 203, 205 SuperValu Spinach 250g Best before: 01/08/2025, 03/08/2025 Batch code: 206 01/08/2025, 03/08/2025 206 Tesco Mild Spinach 350g Best before: 02/08/2025 Batch code: 206 The FSAI confirmed that 'These recalls are not connected with the wider listeria outbreak among ready meals, which saw over 200 products pulled from store shelves last month.' In July, more than 140 ready-made meals produced by Ballymaguire Foods were recalled amid what was described as an 'extensive outbreak' of Listeria monocytogenes. Pic: Getty Images The meals were supplied to several major Irish supermarkets. Medical investigations are ongoing following the death of an adult who had confirmed listeriosis. To date, nine cases of infection have been confirmed. Symptoms of infection can range from mild flu-like symptoms to gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can lead to more serious complications. At-risk groups include pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The incubation period – the time from infection to the appearance of symptoms – averages around three weeks but can range anywhere from 3 to 70 days. Consumers are strongly advised not to eat any of the affected products. Retailers are instructed to remove them from sale immediately and to display recall notices at point-of-sale. Wholesalers and distributors must notify affected customers, issue recall notices, and ensure the implicated products are withdrawn from sale.
