Give no share of 42% BC quota to Muslims: BJP chief N Ramchander Rao
HYDERABAD: State BJP president N Ramchander Rao has demanded that the Congress government allocate the proposed 42% reservations exclusively to Backward Class (BC) communities, excluding any share for other groups. The BJP's OBC Morcha staged a maha dharna at Indira Park on Saturday, urging the implementation of the Congress' Kamareddy Declaration. Along with Ramchander Rao, Union minister G Kishan Reddy, several MPs, MLAs, MLCs, and other senior party leaders participated in the dharna. Addressing the gathering, Ramchander Rao warned the state government against including Muslims in the 10% quota under the overall 42% reservation proposed for BCs. 'BJP will strongly oppose religion-based reservations,' he said. Accusing Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of politicising the issue by staging protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, he alleged that the Congress was attempting to shift blame onto the Centre to hide its own failure in implementing the promise. He asserted that the BJP has always been committed to the welfare of BCs, citing the appointment of Narendra Modi -- a BC leader -- as the Prime Minister. 'There are 27 ministers from BC communities in the Union Cabinet and five BC chief ministers in BJP-ruled states,' he noted. He also pointed out that the Congress never appointed a BC leader as chief minister in either undivided Andhra Pradesh or Telangana. He demanded that Revanth Reddy disclose how much the Congress government has spent on BC welfare since assuming office, and appealed to BC communities to support the BJP for securing their rights. Addressing on the occasion, Union minister G Kishan Reddy accused the Congress of reneging on its promise to implement 42% reservations for BCs within 100 days of coming to power. 'It has been nearly two years, and the promise remains unfulfilled,' he said. Rejecting the proposed 10% quota for Muslims within the BC reservation pool, Kishan Reddy argued that the minority community is already covered under the Economically Backward Classes (EBC) quota. He also expressed concerns about the state's caste survey, questioning how the population of SCs and STs increased while the number of BCs declined.

Bihar Polls: Mukesh Sahni Stakes Claim To Dy CM Post, Says He's 'Second Groom' After Tejashwi
Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahni demands 60 seats in Bihar elections and aims for Deputy CM post if 'Mahagathbandhan' wins Ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar, Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahni has shaken up the political scene in the state with a series of bold declarations about his party's role in the upcoming polls and his personal political ambitions. In an exclusive interview with News18 Hindi, Sahni made it clear that he sees himself not just as a participant in the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance), but as its second most important leader, even staking claim to the Deputy Chief Minister's post if the alliance forms government. Sahni reiterated that his party will not settle for anything less than 60 seats in the alliance's seat-sharing talks. 'This is non-negotiable," he said, recalling the same demand made at a recent conclave. When asked whether this positioning would relegate the Congress to a third-tier role, Sahni softened the edges, saying there could be a marginal variation of 'two, four, or five seats," but emphasised that dropping to 50 or 45 seats was out of the question. 'There are 243 seats in Bihar. Everyone can be accommodated," he added. Sahni was even more forthright about his political ambitions, asserting that if Tejashwi Yadav becomes Chief Minister, then he should be the 'second", a metaphor for the Deputy CM role. 'You can't do much just by being a minister," Sahni said, reflecting on his past stint in the state cabinet. When you have face value and clarity of purpose, your people believe in you, he further explained. Sahni also drew attention to the sizeable 37% Extremely Backward Class (EBC) population in Bihar, which he claims has lacked real leadership since the days of former Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur. Sahni, who belongs to the Nishad community, said the group makes up 12% of the state's population and deserves proportional political representation. Emphasising shared backward caste identities, Sahni framed the future of the grand alliance as one led by 'two grooms" – one OBC (Tejashwi Yadav) and one EBC (himself). 'If Tejashwi ji is the groom, then Mukesh Sahni is also the groom – Son of Malla," he declared, adding, 'We are not baraatis (guests). We are co-grooms." He argued that this dual leadership model fits squarely with the ideology of RJD founder Lalu Prasad Yadav, who built his political brand on backward caste solidarity. Sahni did not hold back from attacking Bihar's current leadership. 'Nitish ji is the leader, but the two deputy CMs are just loaders," he said, referring to BJP leaders Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Sinha. Taking a dig at the BJP, he claimed that the decision on future deputy chief ministers will be made not in Patna, but in Delhi. Though he called Nitish Kumar his 'guardian", Sahni suggested the Chief Minister is now past his prime. Bureaucrats are running the state, liquor is freely available despite prohibition, and crime is on the rise, he said. With state politics already heating up ahead of the elections, Sahni's remarks are likely to trigger fresh recalculations among alliance partners, and sharpen the focus on caste arithmetic in Bihar's ever-shifting power landscape. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 16:34 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Minority colleges to challenge ‘illegal' govt reservations in FYJC seats in HC
MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Association of Minority Educational Institutions (MAMEI), along with some minority colleges from the city, will file a petition in the Bombay high court on Wednesday, challenging social reservations in the First Year Junior College (FYJC) admission process for 2025-26 for vacant seats in minority colleges. The association claims the state has, without official notification, altered the seat allocation on the centralised admission portal by applying Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Class (OBC) quotas to Open Category seats in minority colleges. This, they argue, violates long-established legal protections granted to minority institutions. According to MAMEI, minority colleges follow a court-approved structure, 50% seats for the minority community, 10% in-house, 5% management and 35% general category—which includes sports and ex-servicemen quotas. The association says this structure has been upheld repeatedly by both the Bombay high court and the Supreme Court, including in a 2001 case where a similar state attempt was struck down. Despite a formal letter to school education minister Dada Bhuse, the association says no response was received, prompting it to take legal action. 'The government is bypassing the legal framework without even issuing a proper resolution or circular,' said a representative. Four Jain minority colleges—including institutions in Nagpur—have already filed separate petitions before the Bombay high court and its Nagpur bench. Another petition has been submitted by Solapur's Walchand College. Christian colleges from Nagpur may also join the legal fight. The controversy began when minority colleges noticed discrepancies after the state uploaded the 2025-26 seat matrix on its official portal. On June 10, through a government resolution, the government again clarified that minority colleges can fill 50% seats from their respective communities. The remaining vacant seats could be passed on to other minorities and, if still unfilled, surrendered to the central pool where, it claimed, standard reservations apply.
