There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today's puzzle before reading further! Hey, Mister! Constructor: Emma Oxford Editor: Amanda Rafkin HABITS (5A: "Bad ___" (2021 Ed Sheeran hit)) "Bad HABITS" is a 2021 song by Ed Sheeran. It's the lead single from his fifth studio album, = ("Equals"). In the music video for "Bad HABITS," Ed Sheeran portrays a vampire wearing a hot pink suit. ARETHA (15A: "Queen of Soul" Franklin) ARETHA Franklin (1942-2018) is considered the "Queen of Soul." During her seven-decade music career, 112 of her singles charted on the U.S. Billboard charts, and she won 18 Grammy Awards. Fun fact: ARETHA Franklin was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; that happened in 1987. ALICE (23A: Girl who travels to Wonderland) The world first met ALICE in Lewis Carroll's 1865 book, ALICE's Adventures in Wonderland. Here's an amazing fact: Since its release 160 years ago, this book has never been out of print. The story has also been adapted numerous times, and ALICE has been the inspiration for many characters. DOE (32A: Fawn's mother) and EWE (3D: Lamb's mother) The parallel clue structure is a nice way to tie these two clues together. ING (34A: Gerund suffix) For those of us who haven't studied grammar for some time, a gerund is the -ING form of a word. In English, a gerund is derived from a verb, but functions as a noun, and can be a subject or object of a sentence. ANN (41A: ___ Arbor, Michigan) ANN Arbor, Michigan, which is located west of Detroit, is home to the University of Michigan. The city was founded in 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Walker Rumsey. Both men were married to women named ANN, so they decided to name the city after their wives. The "Arbor" part of the name is a reference to the stands of bur oak trees in the area. ANEMIA (45A: Blood condition) ANEMIA is a condition in which the blood has a decreased ability to carry oxygen. There are a number of things that can cause ANEMIA, including blood loss or a deficiency of important nutrients such as iron or vitamin B₁₂. VODKA (54A: Unofficial national drink of Poland) VODKA has been important in Poland since Medieval times, when it was not only a popular drink, but also used in medicinal remedies and religious practices. Poland is known for its unique and high quality VODKA brands. These include Żubrówka, which contains a blade of bison grass in each bottle, and Chopin (named after the composer), which is produced in small batches and distilled four times. MEG (57A: Eldest March sister in "Little Women") MEG, Jo, Beth, and Amy are the sisters in Louisa May Alcott's 1860's novel, Little Women. Like Lewis Carroll's tale about ALICE, Louisa May Alcott's story about the March sisters has been adapted multiple times. I'M NOT A ROBOT (59A: Words next to a checkbox in some CAPTCHA challenges) This answer makes me laugh. Every time I encounter an "I'M NOT A ROBOT" message, I can't help but wonder, "Am I A ROBOT?" I also wonder if a ROBOT can be trained to identify that CAPTCHA message and check the box. NATHAN (65A: "Mid-Century Modern" actor Lane) Mid-Century Modern is a TV series that premiered on Hulu in March of this year. NATHAN Lane, Matt Bomer, and NATHAN Lee Graham star as three best friends – "gay gentlemen of a certain age" – who become roommates. Linda Lavin also stars on the show, as the mother of NATHAN Lane's character. Mid-Century Modern is Linda Lavin's last TV role, as she died after the taping of the show's first seven episodes. Her character was written out of the show in the first season episode, "Here's To You Mrs. Schneiderman." RAE (2D: "Insecure" actress Issa) In addition to starring in the TV series Insecure, as the character Issa Dee, Issa RAE is also the creator and co-writer of the show. The show takes a look at the experiences of contemporary Black women, and is partially based on Issa RAE's web series, The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl. HATS (5D: Roles, metaphorically) I am a fan of the HATS as roles metaphor. I'll often say (to myself or others) when I'm switching roles, "Now I'm putting on my mom hat," "Now I'm putting on my crossword constructor hat," etc. THAI (9D: Pad see ew cuisine) Pad see ew is a THAI stir-fried noodle dish. SANTA ANA (10D: Namesake of some infamous California winds) SANTA ANA is a city in southern California. SANTA ANA is part of the greater Los Angeles region, and is the county seat of Orange County. The SANTA ANA winds, which share the city's name, are strong, dry, dust-bearing winds that originate in the area over the Great Basin region and the upper Mojave Desert and blow across Southern California toward the Pacific coast. About 10 to 25 SANTA ANA wind events occur every year, each lasting from one to seven days. The SANTA ANA winds are the force that drive many wildfires in Southern California. IOWA (25D: State in the Corn Belt) Hello, from IOWA! It's true, a lot of corn is grown in this state. The term "Corn Belt" is used to refer to the Midwest U.S. states that produce the majority of the nation's corn. Four states - IOWA, Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota - produce over 50% of the corn grown in the U.S. Of those four, IOWA leads the U.S. states in corn production. More broadly, Corn Belt is used to refer to the area of the country where much of the land is used for farming and agriculture. By either definition, IOWA is a Corn Belt state. IDINA (29D: "Redwood" star Menzel) I have previously discussed the Broadway musical Redwood, in which IDINA Menzel is currently performing. EGG (33D: Chipsi mayai ingredient) Chipsi mayai is an omelet made of french fries and EGGs. The dish originated in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and it is the unofficial national dish of that country. You can read the work of Ada Limón, John Keats, and other POETs on the Poetry Foundation website. ALBANY (45D: Capital of New York) ALBANY, the capital of New York, is located on the Hudson River in upstate New York. MONTE (52D: ___ Carlo (gambling destination on the Mediterranean)) MONTE Carlo is an administrative state of Monaco, a city-state on the French Riviera. MONTE Carlo is home to the MONTE Carlo Casino. Interestingly, citizens of Monaco are not allowed to enter the casino unless they work there. Only about 20% of Monaco's population are citizens, so this interesting law only affects approximately 6,000 people. OMAR (56D: Actor Epps) OMAR Epps played the role of Dr. Dennis Gant on the TV series, ER (1996-1997) and the role of neurologist and Dean of Medicine, Dr. Eric Foreman, on the TV series, House (2004-2012). More recently, OMAR Epps portrayed Detective Malcolm Howard on the TV series Power Book III: Raising Kanan (2021-2025). ONE (62D: ___ Direction ("What Makes You Beautiful" band)) "What Makes You Beautiful" was ONE Direction's 2011 debut single. "Everyone else in the room can see it / Everyone else but you..." A few other clues I especially enjoyed: GREASY (68A: Like the bread in a buttery grilled cheese sandwich) KNITTING (37D: Making a scarf, perhaps) U MAD (39D: Texter's "Did I do something?") KEEP IT CLEAN (17A: "Remember, this is a family show") PACKING PEANUT (35A: Styrofoam bit used in shipping) I'M NOT A ROBOT (59A: Words next to a checkbox in some CAPTCHA challenges) HEY, MISTER!: The last word in each theme answer is the name of a famous MISTER: MR. CLEAN, MR. PEANUT, and MR. ROBOT. HEY, we have a trio of MISTERs today! MR. CLEAN, who made his TV debut in 1958, is the mascot of the Proctor & Gamble all-purpose cleaning product of the same name. MR. PEANUT is the top hat-wearing, monocled mascot of Planters who made his first appearance in 1916. MR. ROBOT is a TV series that aired from 2015-2019. It stars Rami Malek as Elliot Anderson, a cybersecurity engineer and vigilante hacker. Christian Slater portrays the title role. The theme answer KEEP IT CLEAN tipped me off to the theme, and I enjoyed discovering each subsequent MISTER. Congratulations to Emma Oxford making a USA Today crossword debut! Thank you, Emma, for this excellent puzzle. Lewis Capaldi's hilarious reaction to Ed Sheeran's surprise phone call as fans gush over 'bromance'

Lewis Capaldi fans are delighted to have been given an update on the Scots star after his pal Ed Sheeran gave him a surprise goodnight phone call and filmed it live on TikTok. Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran have once again demonstrated their close 'bromance' in a hilarious goodnight call video which has left fans of the music duo in stitches. Taking to TikTok earlier this week, Sheeran uploaded an amusing video to the streaming platform of him phoning 'his one and only to wish him a goodnight' on his tablet. The video was uploaded in the midst of a viral TikTok 'positive masculinity' trend where men have been filming themselves making surprise phone calls to their mates before bedtime to say goodnight and tell them they love them. Capaldi, 28, can be heard answering the call as Sheeran tells him: "Hello mate. I'm just calling to wish you goodnight. ‌ Without even questioning the situation, Lewis replies: "Hey baby. Goodnight my guy. Goodnight my special guy." The Bad Habits hitmaker asks him: "What are you doing?" as the Scots singer responds: "I'm kinda just chilling on my couch right now. Feeling pretty mellow." ‌ Sheeran can be seen stifling a laugh on the camera as he continues: "And what are you wearing?" ‌ The Someone You Loved singer replies in true Capaldi fashion: "Just the usual, got my little boccies (boxers) on. You know, just hanging out, relaxing." Ed, 34, says: "Well I just want to let you know that you're loved and cared for" as Lewis says back to him: "I'll think about you when I go to sleep tonight." ‌ Sheeran adds: "I'll think about you right now just before I go to sleep and whilst I'm asleep." Lewis signs off as he says: "Nice one bro. Love you" leaving his pal Ed laughing as he ends the call with: "Love you my love. Hang loose." The video, which was uploaded to Ed Sheeran's official TikTok account, has racked in 1.5m likes with amused fans racing to the comment section. ‌ One wrote: "Lewis so unfazed by this I am 100% convinced you do this every night." Another fan exclaimed: "The bromance between ed sheeran and lewis capaldi never dies." ‌ A third joked: "Are we interrupting?" while a fourth commented: "Lewis reacted as if this was a part of his bedtime routine #positivemasculinity" The video comes just days after the duo were recently spotted at the Premier League game between Ipswich Town and West Ham on Sunday, May 25. Capaldi, who has been keeping a low profile since he announced he was taking a break from the limelight in 2023, was seen laughing and joking with Ed in the stands of the game. ‌ The Someone You Loved hitmaker said he was taking a break from music following his Glastonbury performance almost two years ago, where he was seen visibly struggling with Tourette's syndrome, which he was diagnosed with in September 2022. However, he is rumoured to be back in the studio making music and is thought to be making a comeback soon. Loyal fans in the comment section of Ed's Tiktok begged the Scots singer to return soon as one wrote: "We miss Lewis Capaldi", with a series of crying faces. Another echoed: "A Lewis Capaldi update. Tell him we miss him SOOOO MUCH!", accompanied by more sad face emojis. A third wrote: "Thank you for letting us know our Lewis is ok! We love you both!"

Ed Sheeran Dials Back In: ‘Old Phone' Rings In a New Era

Upon the release of his song Bad Habits back in 2021, Ed Sheeran said, 'I'm nervous and excited and ready to go.' That may be how he feels right now, after releasing his latest single Old Phone from his forthcoming album Play. Bad Habits marked a shift in sound for Sheeran, as his fans are more accustomed to his ballads. However, after a four-year hiatus, Sheeran needed a buzzworthy song. He said, 'People either like this song or they hate this song, but they WILL talk about this song.' It has been another four years since then, and on March 28th, Sheeran created the Instagram account @Teddysoldphone and began uploading photos. On this account, you'll find old photos of him with friends like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, Gigi Hadid, Bruno Mars, Niall Horan, and more. He's also shared pictures with his wife, along with screenshots and notes—including one from 2015, where he announced he would be taking a break from his phone. Story continues below advertisement The account serves as a tease for the single, which is out now. In his Instagram caption, he shares what it was like creating the song: 'The whole experience was such an emotional journey. I wrote the song Old Phone on my own at 2AM while jetlagged in India, finishing the album, and recorded it that morning. It feels like a song that should've been on my debut album, but also a song I couldn't have written until I experienced real-life things happening to me. It makes me emotional to sing, and I hope it finds some emotion in you too.' Play is set to release on September 12th, 2025.

Ed Sheeran named to 2025 TIME100 Most Influential People list; Is Nashville in his future?

British-born pop superstar Ed Sheeran – who, of late, has teased a third time's the charm relationship to the idea of again, and possibly more permanently, relocating to Nashville – has been recently named to the 2025 TIME100 Most Influential People list. Of note, Snoop Dogg, another artist whose recent Music City exploits have included a collaboration with ERNEST and partnering with Dr. Dre for a Lower Broadway speakeasy bearing the name of their brand of spirits, has also been named to the list. Regarding the "Bad Habits" performer, actor Chris Hemsworth wrote, 'Ed Sheeran has an almost supernatural ability to connect. His songs, voice and words belong to all of us. Whether you're at home with your headphones on, driving through the countryside, or in a stadium packed with 70,000 people singing at the top of their lungs, his music feels personal. His instinct for storytelling makes you feel like he wrote that song just for you, no matter where you're from or what you've been through.' Pair Post Malone — another superstar enamored with country music — with Ed Sheeran, and that equals nearly a half-billion singles sold of superstar artistry that's potentially Nashville-based in the future. The ubiquity of that level of hit-making is summarized in Sheeran's TIME feature. "For much of the 2010s, Sheeran's songs coursed through public spaces like oxygen. Other songwriters and musical fads came and went, but Sheeran continued to crank out ubiquitous hits, sometimes writing them on his own… In the 2010s on Spotify, he outstreamed collaborators like Beyoncé, Justin Bieber and even his close friend Taylor Swift…He's now the all-time sixth-most streamed artist on Spotify, and has shattered all sorts of streaming and concert attendance records around the world." Country's legendary pastoral inspirations could play a role in Sheeran's future. Having already achieved global chart-toppers like "Shape of You" and "Perfect," the Grammy winner notes, 'I think now I've explored everything…So it is stripping it back and finding the joy in creating sh-t.' "I've made country songs in the past; they've just never come out," Sheeran recently told "Call Her Daddy" podcast host Alex Cooper. "I have to do it properly, and once you transition to country, you can't transition back. Once you're there, you're there." Sheeran has spent two famous stints in Music City. Between album recording cycles or headlining sold-out shows at the Ryman Auditorium and Nissan Stadium, he grew an affinity for Nashville's creative community and country music's legacy. In 2013, Sheeran, then 22, told the BBC that the city's ability to blend "music, countryside and a relaxed atmosphere" with "very, very nice people" and a lack of "paparazzi on the lookout for celebrities" was attractive to him. In July 2023, after a Nissan Stadium concert, he visited Santa's Pub, where he reveled with customers. He said he was a longtime fan of the perpetually Christmas-decorated dive bar in the shadow of Geodis Park in Nashville's Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood. That visit occurred after an intimate set at the Ryman Auditorium, followed by a "Mathematics" tour date at Nissan Stadium that drew an estimated 73,000 concertgoers to the stadium, a single-night attendance record, per organizers. "Nashville, this feels like a homecoming show. I'm so glad to be back," the performer stated at the NFL's Tennessee Titans home. Over the past four years, Sheeran's been busily traveling the world and compiling tracks for "Play," a forthcoming album with no release date yet. His TIME feature notes that 95 percent of the over 320 songs he's penned for the project will likely not be included in the final 13 tracks. Among those journeys to compile "Play" include bar-hopping trips to Boston, Los Angeles and New York (alongside a recent week in Nashville). As well, he's continued work with 'Azizam"'s Swedish-Iranian and Farsi music-influenced producer Ilya Salmanzadeh, working with a dozen musicians in Goa, on India's southwestern coast, plus even singing in Punjabi alongside Hindi singer Arijit Singh on an unreleased track. 'In Western pop music, it can get quite stagnant and same-y and trend-following,' he says. 'Whereas in India, I found that it was just their own wave, and it just is rather than trying to fit in things," added Sheeran, continuing that Indian and Farsi music's rhythmic and harmonic patterns are similar to the Celtic music his father played during his childhood. Regarding his expectations for his forthcoming album, Sheeran offers thoughts based on altruistic goal-setting: 'I've kind of got to a point in my career where I'm just sort of like, 'Am I enjoying it?'' rather than, 'Is it commercially doing well?''
