Bengal govt files case against BJP's Koustav Bagchi over remarks on CM Mamata
Kolkata: The West Bengal government has filed a case against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Koustav Bagchi at the Calcutta City Sessions Court over his alleged statements against chief minister Mamata Banerjee. According to the court order, a copy of which was seen by HT, Bagchi has 'repeatedly made derogatory comments and defamatory statements against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.' Bagchi, however, argued that whatever he mentioned is from a book written by retired Indian administrative service officer and former All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Dipak Ghosh, who died in March this year. 'The book is not banned. I mentioned some of its contents. I will prove in court that the charges hold no water,' Bagchi told HT. The state's petition was heard earlier this week by the court's chief judge Sukumar Ray, who passed the order on June 5, saying Bagchi — who is also a Calcutta High Court lawyer — will be heard on June 18. The public prosecutor told the court that Bagchi made the comments against Banerjee 'with the sole intention to traduce her malevolently and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.' Section 356(2) deals with proclaimed offenders who can be tried in absentia. 'I have carefully perused the petition of the complainant including evidence, documentary and electronic... the complainant, being a public servant, is exempted to be examined on solemn affirmation,' the court order said, referring to videos on YouTube and a Bengali news channel that were produced as evidence. '...the accused should be given an opportunity of being heard,' the order added. No TMC leader commented on the case, saying it was an administrative matter.

"I am surprised to note that this person has crossed all limits to malign the Chief Minister who is a mahila. India reinforces commitment to WHO global traditional medicine strategy at World Health Assembly
New Delhi: India has asserted its commitment to strengthening traditional medicine systems as part of an integrated approach to healthcare. Speaking at the 78th World Health Assembly held in Geneva under the theme "One World for Health", Arindam Bagchi, Permanent Representative to the UN, welcomed the adoption of the new WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025- 2034 and highlighted India's efforts to embed evidence-based traditional practices into national and global health frameworks, an Ayush ministry statement said. India's approach, characterized by integration of modern medicine with scientifically validated traditional systems such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, and Siddha, was emphasised as a practical model for other nations. Bagchi noted that India had shown strong leadership in implementing the previous WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy (2014- 2023) and expressed support for its successor framework, the statement stated. India's significant contribution to the global traditional medicine ecosystem is reflected in the establishment of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, the statement said. Launched in 2022 with the support of the government of India and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the centre is the first of its kind and plays a vital role in data analytics, policy support, standard-setting, and research collaboration. A key development this year was the signing of a donor agreement between the Ministry of Ayush and WHO on May 24 to initiate work on a dedicated traditional medicine module under the International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI), the statement said. Lauding this milestone during his 'Mann Ki Baat' address, Modi had noted it would enable Ayush systems to reach a global audience through a scientific and standardised framework. "India is proud to contribute to the global integration of traditional medicine. The ICHI module will enhance scientific credibility and facilitate global recognition of Ayush systems. We remain committed to supporting WHO's efforts of inclusive, safe, and evidence-based traditional healthcare," said Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, secretary in the Ministry of Ayush. A WHO statement said the new WHO strategy encourages member states to enhance regulation, integrate traditional medicine services where appropriate, and uphold indigenous knowledge, environmental sustainability, and biodiversity. India's initiatives resonate strongly with these principles, underscoring its role as a committed partner in advancing traditional medicine for global well-being, the statement said. India remains dedicated to supporting WHO and member states in realising the full potential of traditional medicine in achieving universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals , it stated.

Surprise police checks reveal flouting of norms by many hotels in Visakhapatnam
As part of security measures, the city police conducted surprise inspections at more than 80 hotels and lodges simultaneously on Monday night. Following instructions from the Commissioner of Police, Shankabratha Bagchi, police teams under the supervision of senior officials conducted the raids between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. They uncovered multiple violations by several hotels including operating without proper licences, mandatory fire No Objection Certificate (NOC), trade licences, and other essential clearances. Multiple teams took part in the raids in different areas in Zone I and II and each team was equipped with body-worn cameras and included a woman police constable or woman home guard to ensure gender-sensitive procedures during the checks. The inspections focused on verifying the identity of guests, checking for individuals with Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs), absconding suspects, and minors. Officials also assessed whether hotels were adhering to operational regulations such as maintaining valid trade licences, fire NOCs, GST registrations, and FSSAI licences. Compliance with safety measures like functioning CCTV cameras, metal detectors, and baggage scanners was also reviewed. The police discovered that eight hotels lacked a valid fire NOC, while seven hotels were operating without a basic trade licence. As many as 22 hotels did not possess the mandatory FSSAI licence required for serving food in the hotel. Seven hotels had not been updating guest data with the city police's Visitor Monitoring System (VMS), a key tool for tracking the movement of suspicious individuals arriving in the city. The police have begun coordinating with relevant departments to initiate action pertaining to the violations. Mr. Bagchi, in a release, stated that such raids will be conducted randomly as part of crime prevention and security measures.
