Baghdad launches largest afforestation campaign, will plant one million trees

Baghdad ( – The Baghdad Municipality is preparing to launch its largest-ever afforestation campaign, with plans to plant a million trees in a major urban transformation project. The announcement was made today, Saturday (August 9, 2025), by Baghdad Municipality's spokesperson, Uday Al-Jandil. Al-Jandil told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the campaign will commence in the upcoming autumn season. He also provided an update on the ongoing Green Belt Project, the first of its kind in the capital, stating that it has reached over 95% completion. This project is designed to create urban forests that will serve as a crucial barrier against dust storms during the summer. A key element of the Green Belt Project is the use of treated wastewater for irrigation. Al-Jandil noted that a major wastewater treatment plant has been established in the Saqlawiyah area to make the water suitable for this purpose. The targeted area, covering 940 donums (approximately 235 hectares) between the Al-Mansour district and Abu Ghraib, will be transformed into green spaces planted with long-lived trees suitable for Baghdad's hot climate. The spokesperson also revealed a significant investment project to convert the former Al-Rasheed military camp into a new green lung for the city. This ambitious project will involve planting one million trees over an area of 5,000 donums (1,250 hectares), a size roughly five times that of Al-Zawraa Park. The Al-Rasheed project is expected to include various activities and facilities for Baghdad families. Furthermore, work is underway on the third phase of the Abu Nuwas area's development. This phase will increase green spaces and introduce 17 new recreational activities, establishing the area as a dedicated entertainment center for families. The municipality's comprehensive strategy, which includes modern smart irrigation systems for the Green Belt, aims to combat climate challenges and enhance the quality of life for Baghdad's residents.

Once revived, now neglected: Baghdad's Abu Nuwas Street struggles again

Shafaq News/ Once a symbol of Baghdad's charm, Abu Nuwas Street has long captivated residents with its stunning Tigris River views and lush green spaces. However, despite periodic restoration efforts, neglect repeatedly takes its toll, pushing the street into decline. Following years of deterioration after 2003, rehabilitation of Abu Nuwas Street only began in 2011. Roughly a year ago, the statue of Abu Nuwas, the famous classical Arabic poet, was restored, but waste continues to accumulate along the road, particularly in the area opposite the Ministry of Communications, extending toward Karrada and Jadriya. Baghdad Municipality spokesperson Uday Al-Jandeel told Shafaq News that the street remains a priority for the city's administration, noting that while the first two phases of rehabilitation were completed, work stalled due to a lack of funding. 'Once financial resources become available, efforts will resume,' he added. After the completion of the first phase in 2023, the street saw a resurgence, with families flocking to its parks and public spaces. In June 2023, Baghdad Mayor Ammar Musa Kazem announced the final touches on the second phase of the Abu Nuwas Corniche and Park project. 'The redevelopment includes a 1-kilometer stretch of the corniche and 17 acres of green spaces, aiming to transform the area into one of the city's largest recreational and tourist destinations,' he revealed, adding that the second phase also introduced new facilities, including a parking lot for 100 vehicles, and designated areas for children, seniors, and people with disabilities. Despite these efforts, many Baghdad residents stress the need for urgent action to complete the project. Academic Razzaq Ouda Faleh told Shafaq News, 'It is shameful that such a vital street in the heart of Baghdad is left in this state.' Citizen Huda Sahib expressed frustration to Shafaq News over the stalled progress. 'With work halted, neglect has crept back in—the park is deteriorating, and the street has become a haven for delinquent behavior.'

Construction of Iraq's first waste-to-energy project begins

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, launched on Thursday the construction work of Iraq's first waste-to-energy project with a capacity of 100 megawatts in the Nahrawan area, southeast of Baghdad. Al-Sudani stated that the project is part of the government's plan to diversify energy sources and to transition to clean and renewable energy, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's office (PMO). The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, explained that the project will process 3,000 tons of garbage per day and produce 100 megawatts of power. According to a statement released in February by Mohammed Al-Rubaie, the media and relations officer at the Baghdad Municipality, the project is anticipated to be operational within six months, aiding Baghdad's efforts to reduce emissions and help address the capital's energy issue. The construction of the waste incineration plant was given to a Chinese company, according to Al-Rubaie. The program is a component of the Iraqi government's efforts to lessen its reliance on fossil fuels and transition to sustainable energy. China's Shanghai SUS Environment Co. Ltd. was reportedly given a $497 million contract to construct the country's first waste-to-energy facility. Trash is transported by trash pickup trucks to the waste-to-energy plants, where superheated steam from boiler combustion powers turbines to produce electricity. In addition to meeting Iraq's energy demands, this project provides a waste management solution, which is a significant step toward a cleaner and greener future for the entire country.
