Iraqi News3 days ago
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Baghdad Municipality is preparing to launch its largest-ever afforestation campaign, with plans to plant a million trees in a major urban transformation project. The announcement was made today, Saturday (August 9, 2025), by Baghdad Municipality's spokesperson, Uday Al-Jandil.
Al-Jandil told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the campaign will commence in the upcoming autumn season. He also provided an update on the ongoing Green Belt Project, the first of its kind in the capital, stating that it has reached over 95% completion. This project is designed to create urban forests that will serve as a crucial barrier against dust storms during the summer.
A key element of the Green Belt Project is the use of treated wastewater for irrigation. Al-Jandil noted that a major wastewater treatment plant has been established in the Saqlawiyah area to make the water suitable for this purpose. The targeted area, covering 940 donums (approximately 235 hectares) between the Al-Mansour district and Abu Ghraib, will be transformed into green spaces planted with long-lived trees suitable for Baghdad's hot climate.
The spokesperson also revealed a significant investment project to convert the former Al-Rasheed military camp into a new green lung for the city. This ambitious project will involve planting one million trees over an area of 5,000 donums (1,250 hectares), a size roughly five times that of Al-Zawraa Park. The Al-Rasheed project is expected to include various activities and facilities for Baghdad families.
Furthermore, work is underway on the third phase of the Abu Nuwas area's development. This phase will increase green spaces and introduce 17 new recreational activities, establishing the area as a dedicated entertainment center for families. The municipality's comprehensive strategy, which includes modern smart irrigation systems for the Green Belt, aims to combat climate challenges and enhance the quality of life for Baghdad's residents.

Iraqi power outages hit central and southern provinces amid sweltering heat

Baghdad ( – Power systems have gone offline in most of Iraq's central and southern provinces, including the capital Baghdad, local sources reported today, Monday. The widespread electricity failure comes as temperatures continue to soar, exceeding 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) in many areas. Sources from various provinces confirmed that power stations in Basra, Maysan, Dhi Qar, Baghdad, Diyala, and Anbar all went out of service. While no official statement has been released, the probable cause is believed to be heavy loads on the power grid or an unspecified emergency. The simultaneous outage across multiple regions highlights the chronic instability of Iraq's power infrastructure, which is consistently overwhelmed by increased demand, particularly during the country's blistering summer months.

Kurdistan's Al-Sulaymaniyah imposes fines for water waste

Shafaq News – Al-Sulaymaniyah Kurdistan Region's Al-Sulaymaniyah has imposed fines on those who waste water, as the province faces a severe shortage, a senior official informed Shafaq News on Sunday. Bakhtiar Taher, Director of the Al-Sulaymaniyah Water Department, explained that people who waste water—such as by washing vehicles in front of their homes—will face fines starting at 50,000 Iraqi dinars (about 34 US dollars). Highlighting that water is a national resource requiring preservation, he warned that unpaid fines will be added to the offender's monthly water bill. Water supply in Al-Sulaymaniyah has been reduced to once every five days, down from once every three days, as household wells have dried up extensively. The water crisis in the Kurdistan Region is intensifying, with rainfall declining nearly 40 percent since the 1990s. Key reservoirs such as Dukan Dam hold about 24 percent of their capacity, the lowest level recorded in two decades. Reduced inflows from upstream dams in neighboring countries have further exacerbated the situation, posing risks to agriculture and public health across the Region.
