Baghdad launches largest afforestation campaign, will plant one million trees
Baghdad ( – The Baghdad Municipality is preparing to launch its largest-ever afforestation campaign, with plans to plant a million trees in a major urban transformation project. The announcement was made today, Saturday (August 9, 2025), by Baghdad Municipality's spokesperson, Uday Al-Jandil. Al-Jandil told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the campaign will commence in the upcoming autumn season. He also provided an update on the ongoing Green Belt Project, the first of its kind in the capital, stating that it has reached over 95% completion. This project is designed to create urban forests that will serve as a crucial barrier against dust storms during the summer. A key element of the Green Belt Project is the use of treated wastewater for irrigation. Al-Jandil noted that a major wastewater treatment plant has been established in the Saqlawiyah area to make the water suitable for this purpose. The targeted area, covering 940 donums (approximately 235 hectares) between the Al-Mansour district and Abu Ghraib, will be transformed into green spaces planted with long-lived trees suitable for Baghdad's hot climate. The spokesperson also revealed a significant investment project to convert the former Al-Rasheed military camp into a new green lung for the city. This ambitious project will involve planting one million trees over an area of 5,000 donums (1,250 hectares), a size roughly five times that of Al-Zawraa Park. The Al-Rasheed project is expected to include various activities and facilities for Baghdad families. Furthermore, work is underway on the third phase of the Abu Nuwas area's development. This phase will increase green spaces and introduce 17 new recreational activities, establishing the area as a dedicated entertainment center for families. The municipality's comprehensive strategy, which includes modern smart irrigation systems for the Green Belt, aims to combat climate challenges and enhance the quality of life for Baghdad's residents.
