Iraq signs contract for fifth submarine cable, aims to rival Suez Canal as transit hub

Baghdad ( – Iraq's Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced today, Tuesday, the signing of a contract for the country's fifth submarine cable with the United Arab Emirates-based company, Breeze. The strategic agreement is a cornerstone of Iraq's vision to become a major overland communications corridor for international traffic between Asia and Europe, rivalling traditional sea routes. Speaking during the signing ceremony, Minister Al-Yasiri stated that the new cable is a success story for the Ministry of Communications. She highlighted that for the past 15 years, Iraq had only two inactive submarine cables. In just the last three years, the country has now established five cables and is working on a contract for a sixth, a rapid expansion aimed at modernizing Iraq's digital infrastructure. According to Al-Yasiri, the submarine cables, which land in the port of Faw, serve a dual purpose: first, to add massive internet capacity within Iraq to improve service quality and lower prices for citizens; and second, to enable international 'transit' communications to pass overland through Iraq to Europe via Turkey. The ministry's goal is to establish the Iraqi land corridor as a competitive alternative to the maritime routes through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. The minister revealed that Iraq has several transit networks either under implementation or in the contractual phase. These include the existing 'Civilizations Road' network with IQ Company, which has already contributed to state revenues, and a planned transit network along the new 'Development Road' project. Al-Yasiri also mentioned ongoing land transit network projects with Qatar's Ooredoo and the UAE's Breeze. Additionally, a consortium of companies including AXA, GCX, and Horizon has been given approval to create a single Iraqi-Turkish land transit network, further cementing Iraq's strategic position as a digital gateway.

Arbaeen pilgrimage: Iraq implements a full security and service plan

Shafaq News – Najaf On Friday, Iraq's Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari announced the launch of a comprehensive security and service plan for the Arbaeen pilgrimage, emphasizing Najaf's role as a vital hub for millions of pilgrims heading to Karbala. 'Najaf is no less important than Karbala during Arbaeen,' he stressed during a press conference. 'It is a key gateway for pilgrims and requires the same level of preparation and attention.' Arbaeen, observed 40 days after Ashura, marks the martyrdom of Hussein Bin Ali, the third Imam in Shia Islam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad. Millions are expected to converge on Karbala, many traveling on foot from other provinces—especially Najaf, located about 73 kilometers away—along routes lined with thousands of volunteer-run tents offering food, water, and medical care. Al-Shammari outlined a coordinated plan that combines intelligence gathering, field deployment, and logistical support. Medical teams, civil defense units, and municipal services have also been placed on high alert to respond promptly during the pilgrimage. With preparations progressing as planned, Al-Shammari confirmed the introduction of a traffic management strategy designed to reduce accidents by separating pedestrian and vehicle routes. Surveillance cameras, radar systems, and road patrols have been deployed, supported by the full mobilization of the General Directorate of Traffic. 'All government sectors are working as one team to ensure the pilgrimage proceeds smoothly and safely,' he concluded.

Iraq offers new transit air routes to meet airlines' growing demand

Baghdad ( – Due to increased demand from international airlines looking for routes through the country's airspace, the Iraqi Ministry of Transport started to open new air routes, a step that authorities believe might strengthen Iraq's worldwide aviation status. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport, Maytham al-Safi, told Iraq's official newspaper, al-Sabah, that the ministry has made considerable effort to establish aviation routes and improve the efficiency of operations to guarantee the safety and easy transit of planes across the country's airspace. The step is part of larger ambitions to increase international collaboration and modernize Iraq's aviation infrastructure, according to al-Safi. The Iraqi official explained that Iraq's Transport Ministry has received additional demands from worldwide carriers to access Iraqi airspace, noting that Iraq is a critical aviation connection between the East and West, as well as a crucial transit spot in the air navigation network, both regionally and internationally. Al-Safi stated that the step aims to improve Iraq's globally recognized airspace rating and fulfill the demands of international airlines. Earlier in July, the Iraqi Ministry of Transport revealed that more than 700 aircraft traveled across Iraqi airspace in a single day, marking the greatest level of aviation traffic ever recorded in Iraq. The achievement is an indicator of the government's national plan for rebuilding international trust in Iraqi airspace and improving operational preparedness to meet the highest standards. Director of Iraq's General Company for Air Navigation Services (GCANS), Abbas al-Baydani, explained that the organization has been able to carry out qualitative initiatives in a very brief period of time to build its infrastructure and improve personnel efficiency, reflecting Iraq's critical and essential position as a strategic air corridor connecting East and West. Several regional and international airlines have reverted to using Iraqi airspace as a key route for their flights due to Iraq's operational stability and precise air traffic control services.
