Hong Kong triathlon big guns condemned to nervous National Games selection wait

One of Hong Kong's best triathletes will not make the city's squad for the National Games, and head coach Andrew Wright said they only had themselves to blame. While Wong Tsz-to and Bailee Brown secured automatic qualification at this weekend's China National Triathlon Championships, Jason Ng Tai-long, Oscar Coggins and Robin Elg all failed to meet the required standard. That leaves Wright having to decide who to take in a six-strong squad of three men and three women for the competition in November. In the women's race in Xuzhou on Saturday, Brown finished fifth to claim her place in the squad, and while she, Cade Wright, Wong and Elg combined for second in Sunday's relay, the head coach said that would not be good enough for a medal at the Games. While no Hong Kong athlete achieved automatic individual Games qualification in the opening two selection races, in April and May, Wong ticked every box on Saturday. Hong Kong head coach Andrew Wright has a tough decision to make. Bailee Brown makes comeback as Hong Kong triathletes compete in Taizhou race

Bailee Brown made a determined return at the Asia Triathlon Cup in Taizhou on Saturday in her first race since a serious finger injury last October, but was forced to withdraw late in the run. Advertisement Brown kept pace early, finishing the opening 1.5 kilometres swim just three seconds behind eventual winner Huang Anqi. On the bike leg, Brown rode with fellow Hong Kong athlete Cade Wright in a group of three before dehydration forced her to stop 3km from the finish of the 10km run. 'It was a step in the right direction, I was impressed she got out there and got stuck in,' Hong Kong head coach Andrew Wright said. 'She's just not sharp enough yet, her race fitness isn't quite there. She pushed herself to the limit and crumbled with 3km to go. She had wobbly legs and dehydration, and couldn't finish. Cade Wright delivered a 'great swim' on the way to a ninth-place finish on the mainland. Hong Kong triathlete Bailee Brown set to return from injury ordeal in mainland China race

Bailee Brown has been cleared to return from her injury nightmare and join a 16-strong Hong Kong contingent at the Asia Triathlon Cup in Taizhou on Saturday. While the men's big three of Jason Ng Tai-long, Oscar Coggins and Robin Elg will skip the event, some of their teammates competing on the mainland this weekend have been warned they were fighting for their international futures. The luckless Brown needed three operations since badly damaging a finger in December. However, head coach Andrew Wright said the 25-year-old was in rude health following an unbroken four-week training block. 'Cream always rises to the top, and people who are talented bounce back from anything,' he added. 'She's as fit as she was before the injury, although not as fit or as fast as she'd have been without it. She'll be nearly there by the National Games [in November].' Wright said being able to train and fulfil her potential had significantly lifted Brown's mood. 'When you're stopped from doing what you're passionate about, it's a bit depressing,' he added. Last time out, in Chengdu five weeks ago, Coggins' heartbeat dropped alarmingly, before he faded during the closing run. The 25-year-old had been disappointed with his performance at April's Asia Sprint Championships, too.

Hong Kong triathlete Brown suffers injury setback as National Games push begins

Bailee Brown has suffered a setback in her recovery from a serious finger injury that means she will miss this month's season-opening Asia Triathlon Cup race in Malaysia. Hong Kong's leading female triathlete, Brown had hoped to compete in Putrajaya, two months after she fell while on a training run and fractured and ripped open her right index finger. During emergency surgery, she had floating bone removed from the finger, which had bent to a right angle, and needed 15 stitches. Brown underwent a second surgery following complications with her recovery, and needs one more operation before she can resume training. Andrew Wright, the Hong Kong triathlon head coach, said the best-case scenario for Brown, who has remained 'fit and in good shape', was a return to 'proper' training in six weeks. That would leave her precious little time to prepare for the Hong Kong-staged Asian Sprint Championships, on April 5, which will double as a selection race for November's National Games, where Brown is targeting a podium finish. Bailee Brown is set to undergo a third surgery on the finger she damaged in December. Photo: Yik Yeung-man 'Such a high-level athlete can get fit very quickly and [assuming a smooth recovery], she is likely to be on the start line [for Asian Sprint Championships], although she will struggle to compete for a medal,' Wright said.
