Bakersfield Christmas Parade crash trial delayed to July

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Due to the unavailability of a defense expert, the trial of Alan Booth, accused of driving drunk and hitting multiple people at the 2023 Bakersfield Christmas Parade, was postponed Friday to July 21. Booth, 73, was not present at Friday's hearing. He remains in custody at Lerdo Jail, held without bail. Booth has pleaded not guilty to four counts of assault with a deadly weapon other than a gun, two drunken driving-related counts and misdemeanor resisting arrest. A botched operation: The international manhunt for escaped inmate Cesar Hernandez Three people were hit by Booth's pickup at the Dec. 7, 2023, parade; one suffered serious injuries. A breath test indicated Booth's blood-alcohol content was 0.25%, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%, according to police reports. Blood test results showed his BAC was 0.28%, the reports say. He was released on bail until April 2024 — when he was arrested on suspicion of driving on a suspended license with a BAC at 0.24%, reports say. That case is scheduled for trial later this month. A packed house heard from City Councilmember Andrae Gonzalez, Assistant City Manager Rick Anthony, and Bakersfield Police Lt. Nicole Anderberg, among others. The DBA handed out its Innovation Award to Carrie Blind of Wild n Styled, not only for her creative additions to the Haberfelde building, where her salon is headquartered, but for her work creating and organizing the Art Heist. The October 2024 event saw 31 downtown businesses transformed into individual art galleries showcasing the work of more than 100 Kern County artists. Events like the Downtown Breakfast are usually full of optimism and mutual congratulations, but Thursday's event, sponsored in part by KGET, truly did have some good news. Developers and other project advocates were on hand to update the business community on several high profile developments in the city's central corridor. The ambitious Woolworth building renovation at 19th and K is moving along at breakneck speed. Wife of Bakersfield Christmas Parade victim killed in Tehachapi accident

Candace Lorraine Rios, wife of Arnold Rios, who was severely injured by an alleged drunken driver before the 2023 Bakersfield Christmas Parade, was killed in an accident Wednesday, attorneys for the family confirmed Monday. According to the Kern County Sheriff's Office, Rios, 72 was struck by a vehicle while walking on the northbound side of Highway 202 just north of Cummings Valley Road in Tehachapi at 9:24 p.m. Wednesday. Rios was taken to Kern Medical, where she was pronounced deceased from her injuries the next day, KCSO said in an incident report. Jorge Barrientos, spokesperson for the law firm Chain, Cohn, Clark, confirmed to The Californian the Candace Rios in the report was Arnold Rios' wife. Chain, Cohn, Clark is representing the Rios family in its civil case against 72-year-old Alan Lewis Booth, who is suspected of being drunk and crashing his F-150 truck into a crowd of people minutes before the 2023 Bakersfield Christmas Parade. Barrientos said the family is not giving comment at this time.

Expect fog to be part of your morning commute

The weather in Kern County is expected to remain calm throughout the upcoming week. As we welcome December, be prepared for daily fog rolling in. Looking back at November, we were fortunate to receive a significant amount of rain — 1.18 inches for the month, surpassing the average of .51 inches. That's a notable difference of .67 inches. What causes the thick tule fog in California's Central Valley? By comparison, November 2023 only saw .02 inches of rain for the entire month. This week, fog will be making a return. For the Bakersfield Christmas Parade on Thursday, anticipate daytime temperatures in the upper 60s, dropping to the low 50s by parade time. Unfortunately, the air quality remains poor due to a Rex Block pattern limiting air circulation trapping pollution in the valley. Remember, burning is strictly prohibited.
