Robo-Hornets make fourth trip to world championships
HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local high school robotics team is proving that small rural schools can compete amongst some of the very best youth innovators in the world. Harpursville High School's acclaimed robotics team, the 'Robo-Hornets,' recently returned home from the VEX Robotics World Championship in Texas. 885 teams from all over the world competed in the three-day tournament. The Robo-Hornets made it to the Final 16, ultimately losing in the elimination round. The team qualified for the competition after winning the state title earlier this year. Kalen Kulas is a freshman at Harpursville High School. This is his first year on the robotics team. He said competing in the world championship was nerve-wracking but also very exciting. 'It was really surprising. At states, I didn't expect to make it to worlds. I was more than happy making it to States. I had a great time there, and right at the end, I figured out I'd be able to go because I won the Excellence Award, and that was crazy,' said Kulas. This is the fourth year the Robo-Hornets have qualified for the world championships. Advisor and Coach Bruce Salisbury has been working with the team for ten years. He says he says he is so proud of the students' hard work and dedication that it makes him emotional. He says the kids and their success always come first. 'They constantly work, just their devotion to doing the best that they can. One person at worlds made the announcement that 'You guys are here because we know you give up your weekends, your holidays. The advisors are there late in the hours.' And everybody looked at me and said, 'Yes, that's describing me,' because the kids come first,' said Salisbury. The Robo-Hornets' record this year was 7-3. The team is already working on their robots for next year's season. Ponies clinch 11th straight win on Baseball and Education Day
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies continue their winning streak in front of one of the largest and youngest crowds of the year. The Ponies beat the Somerset Patriots 4 to 3 on Wednesday as they keep their now 11-game win streak alive. This winning streak is the third longest of all time for the team and the longest since 2006. In addition to the team's historic run, they were cheered on by over 5,100 young, adoring fans. The team held its Education and Baseball event, which gives elementary students the opportunity to come to the games as a field trip with their schools. The Rumble Ponies General Manager Richard Tylicki underscores the importance of having such a young crowd in attendance. 'It's critical because you're trying to grow the game. Youth sports participation is down nationwide, particularly in baseball, so by having the young people here, hopefully, you get them interested in baseball and they become either fans or players. The second part of it is a lot of these kids probably don't get a chance to come to a game, so coming as a field trip, not only enables them to come at a pretty inexpensive price but then doing it as a group is always much more fun when you do things with your friends,' said Tylicki. The Ponies have four more home games coming up this Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with Friday featuring fireworks. Healing After Loss helps community members cope with grief
AFTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A community-driven non-profit held an open-house last week to showcase their services available to those grieving a loss. A local organization, Healing After Loss or HALos, opened its doors last week to those seeking to learn more about its mission. The establishment, located at 146 Main Street in Afton, provides unique and essential programs to those who are grieving. Some programs, like Art for Wellness, foster programs that assist all members of the family, grief recovery work, and trauma and loss help. The establishment features many amenities such as a therapy dog, a comfort room, a gathering room, and a community room. Founder and Executive Director Joyce Humphrey says the scope of their mission has broadened since it started. 'We look at grief in a broader scope than some might. Some people just think of death or possibly divorce that would fall into that category, but we look at incarceration, deployment, fire, flood, all kinds of things that are experienced by a family that are loss,' said Humphrey. The organization is holding a one-day Grief Camp event for school-age kids on June 14 that will be filled with fun activities around the establishment. Auchinachie donates $1,000 to Whitney Point Civic Association
BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The charitable branch of Auchinachie, called Auchinachie CARES, recently donated $1,000 to a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering the community through athletics and activities. The Whitney Point Civic Association began serving the community in 2024. It works to create additional opportunities for youth sports and events in northern Broome County. Since its inception, it has extended the season for several athletes with baseball, basketball, and girls' soccer programs. President of WPCA Sean Walsh says there is an unmet need for accessible sports and community services in the rural parts of the county. 'We identified that we had a bunch of athletes that wanted to do additional seasons, so we said, 'Hey, let's figure it out and do it right.' With that, we had folks reach out to us and say 'Hey, well what if we do some community service stuff to try to tie it in.' As a small town, everybody is pitching in, and it's up to us to make the town what we want it to be,' said Walsh. The donation will help fund the organization's annual golf tournament, which supports the baseball and basketball programs. The WPCA also hosts several community programs. Its next event is on Saturday. It will be hosting a Healthy Relationships and Boundaries class, followed by a sound bath and meditation.
