Trader Joe's collabs with Bay FC on viral mini tote giveaway
Bay FC fans hoping to get their hands on Trader Joe's wildly popular mini tote bags — the same ones listed on the secondary market for as much as $49,000 online earlier this year — will soon have their chance. In a new collaboration between the women's professional soccer club and the grocery chain, ticketed attendees at Bay FC's home match on Aug. 2 against the Houston Dash will receive an exclusive, co-branded mini tote upon entry. The giveaway capitalizes on the national frenzy sparked earlier this year when Trader Joe's pastel-colored canvas totes sold out within minutes and flooded resale sites at eye-popping prices. Now, Bay FC's custom version will be offered as part of its multi-year partnership with the grocer — the company's first with a National Women's Soccer League team. 'We're thrilled to provide a fun, memorable experience for fans,' Bay FC said in its announcement last week, encouraging early arrivals for pre-match FanFest activities. These include an on-stage grocery bagging contest, a Trader Joe's-themed scavenger hunt and giveaways. While the collectible totes will be permitted at the Aug. 2 match, officials note they do not meet PayPal Park's standard bag policy and will be barred at future games.

Soccer-Hosts Morocco to take on Nigeria in African women's final

Hosts Morocco edged Ghana on penalties at Rabat's Stade Olympique while earlier Nigeria ended the reign of defending champions South Africa with a last-gasp 2-1 victory in their clash in Casablanca. Michelle Alozie's floating free kick was missed by both the onrushing Nigerian attacker and the South African goalkeeper and floated into the net for the winner four minutes into stoppage time. Rasheedat Ajibade had given nine-time winners Nigeria the lead from the penalty-spot on the stroke of halftime, before South Africa struck back with a spotkick of their own in the 60th minute, converted by Linda Motlhalo. Just as it seemed extra time would be needed, Alozie floated a cross deep into the box that beat South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini who was under pressure from two Nigerian forwards. Ghana had not been given much chance against Morocco, who were supported by a capacity crowd, but took a 26th-minute lead through Stella Nyameke. Morocco came back to equalise after halftime through Sakina Ouzraoui and then won 4-2 on penalties after extra and South Africa will decide third place in Casablanca on Friday with the final in Rabat on Saturday. The tournament was originally set for last year but postponed because it clashed with the women's soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics. The next Women's Cup of Nations is scheduled to be played in Morocco again next year. (Editing by Toby Davis)

Earthquakes beaten by Seattle as winless skid hits six; Bay City draw
SEATTLE — Danny Musovski scored two goals, his first multi-goal game since 2020, Pedro de la Vega added a goal and an assists and the Seattle Sounders beat the San Jose Earthquakes 3-2 on Saturday night. San Jose (7-9-8) is winless in six straight. De la Vega, on a breakaway, slipped a shot from outside the area inside the back post to cap the scoring in the 69th minute. San Jose's Preston Judd opened the scoring in the 26th minute but Danny Musovski answered for the Sounders (10-6-7) in the 28th to make it 1-1. Jamar Ricketts played a low cross from the left side to the near post where Judd put away a first-touch shot before Musovski beat defender Dave Romney and goalkeeper Daniel De Sousa Britto — known simply as 'Daniel' — to an arcing ball in played by Albert Rusnák and scored on a header into a wide-open net. After Musovski made it 2-1 in the 54th minute when, on the counter-attack, he headed home an entry pass played in by de la Vega from the center of the area. Cristian Arango responded for San Jose to tie it at 2-2 in the 64th minute. Cristian Espinoza played a free kick to Judd in the center of the area for a header, but goalkeeper Andrew Thomas made a diving one-hand parry before Arango slammed home the putback from point-blank range. Daniel stopped six shots for San Jose. Thomas made his third consecutive start in place of Stefan Frei (concussion protocol) and had four saves for the Sounders. Nouhou (red card - violent conduct) and Jackson Ragen (yellow card accumulation) served suspensions for the Sounders. The Sounders and San Jose played to a 1-1 tie on March 29. Angel City broke through first after a quiet start to the first half, scoring in the 27th minute, chasing down a long ball from Riley Tiernan and knocking home the game's first goal. Hocking, who narrowly missed a goal in the first half, scored on an assist from substitute Maddie Moreau in the 57th minute to pull even. Bay FC made a push in the final minutes, with Hocking missing on a hard shot at close range and Kiki Pickett firing a shot over the crossbar. Bay FC will play the last of its two Summer Series friendlies on Sunday when they host Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds. NWSL play resumes Aug. 2 with the end of summer break, as Bay FC hosts the Houston Dash. Neveal Hackshaw's first goal of the season put Oakland on top in the 22nd minute, firing from deep after a Loudoun turnover. Peter Wilson doubled the lead just two minutes later with his team-leading fifth goal of the season and giving the Roots all the scoring they'd need in a five-minute span.

Bay FC sign ACC Goalkeeper of the Year Leah Freeman, a Berkeley native
A day after placing a goalkeeper on the season-ending injury list, Bay FC moved to fill that spot Friday by signing goalie Leah Freeman through the end of the season. Freeman, a Berkeley High alum, twice was an all-Pac-12 selection at Oregon, where she was named the 2022 Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year. After transferring to Duke in 2023, Freeman became the 2024 ACC Goalkeeper of the Year and a first team All-American. 'I'm incredibly excited to sign with Bay FC and return to the Bay Area as I take this next step in my career,' Freeman said in a statement released by Bay FC. 'It's an amazing opportunity to join a club that's building something special, and I'm grateful to be part of it.' Freeman takes the roster spot held by Melissa Lowder, who missed last season because of a knee injury. Lowder saw preseason action this year but did not play in a regular-season game before landing on the season-ending injury list. Jordan Silkowitz has made 11 starts in goal for Bay FC (4-3-6), who return to action Saturday with a friendly against NWSL rival Angel City. Emmie Allen has started twice in goal.
