Humanitarian groups 'running out of ways to help' as hunger in Gaza spreads, Norwegian Refugee Council says

Humanitarian groups are struggling to help displaced civilians in Gaza as aid staff face hunger amid Israel's aid blockade, an NGO spokesperson told CNN. 'We're running out of ways to help, really, with this suffocating blockade imposed by Israel,' said Ahmed Bayram, media adviser from Norwegian Refugee Council. Since Israeli tanks on Monday rolled into Deir al-Balah, a part of Gaza that had not previously seen ground operations and where displaced people have fled, distributing aid became more difficult, Bayram told CNN's Rosemary Church 'Deir al-Balah… is the capital of displacement in Gaza. It's become also the capital of aid in Gaza. And now Israel has attacked that part where exactly it has been calling on people to move to,' Bayram said. NRC workers are only having one meal a day, 'so that their children don't go to bed with empty stomachs,' he added. Frustration is also mounting because 'thousands and thousands of tons of food' are being left at border crossings while aid organizations are still mostly restricted from moving within the territory, Bayram said. Israel has repeatedly claimed that it is doing this to prevent Hamas from stealing supplies. Aid agencies have denied that supplies end up in Hamas' hands. While Bayram did not specifically name the Israeli- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, he said the current aid mechanism created chaos at distribution sites and called for an end to such operations. 'The first thing that has to happen is for this scheme to go,' he said. 'And the second, which is very simple, is for Israel to open the gates and allow the professionals, the real humanitarians … to do their job again,' he said. GHF has defended its model of assistance delivery and blamed aid organizations for not cooperating.

Nutritionist urges safer meat practices during Eidul Azha celebrations

Listen to article As red meat takes centre stage during Eidul Azha celebrations, health experts are warning the public to be mindful of their consumption habits to avoid potential health risks, particularly for those with chronic conditions. Professor H. Merve Bayram, head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Istanbul Gelişim University, highlighted the health implications of overeating red meat, urging celebrants to adopt safer cooking and storage practices during the holiday. Health first While red meat is a valuable source of nutrients such as high-quality protein, iron, zinc, phosphorus, and vitamin B12, its saturated fat and cholesterol content make moderation essential. 'Freshly slaughtered meat undergoes rigor mortis, which can make it harder to digest,' Prof Bayram explained. 'It's best to let the meat rest for at least 12 to 24 hours before consumption.' Healthier cooking choices Prof Bayram advised limiting red meat intake to two to three times a week, with portion sizes not exceeding 90 to 120 grams for healthy individuals. The method of preparation is also crucial. 'Avoid frying and sautéing. Opt instead for boiling, baking, or grilling,' she said. Grilling should be done with care. She recommends keeping the meat at least 15–20 centimetres away from the fire. 'Too much heat can char the outside while leaving the inside undercooked, resulting in nutrient loss and potentially harmful compounds,' she warned. Special precautions for chronic conditions People with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other chronic illnesses should be particularly vigilant. Prof Bayram advises avoiding saturated fats like internal and tail fat, and recommends leaner cuts cooked in their own fat without added oil. She also discouraged eating meat on an empty stomach early in the morning. 'Begin the day with a balanced breakfast of whole-grain bread, low-fat cheese, and fresh greens to support digestion,' she suggested. Safe handling and storage Proper storage is equally important during the holiday. Prof Bayram advised dividing meat into meal-sized portions and freezing them immediately. Thawing should be done in the refrigerator, not at room temperature, to avoid contamination. Raw meat, she added, must be kept separate from fruits and vegetables to maintain food safety. Celebrating mindfully Prof Bayram concluded with a reminder that Eid al-Adha is not only a time of sharing and celebration but also an opportunity to promote health-conscious habits. 'Through balanced eating, hygienic practices, and portion control, families can enjoy festive meals while protecting their health,' she said. 'This holiday should be remembered not only for its joy, but also for the care we take in preserving well-being.' Other Experts also advises to avoid fizzy drinks with eating meat cooked in oil and to eat vegetables with every meal.

Israel accused of using aid control to forcibly displace Palestinians

Israel's tight grip on humanitarian aid is not just reckless—it's part of a strategy to uproot Palestinians from northern Gaza, the Norwegian Refugee Council has warned. Ahmed Bayram, the organisation's spokesperson, told Al Jazeera the selective delivery of aid amounts to coercion. 'We think that providing aid to one area above another, as opposed to all areas, is a coercive measure to forcibly displace people, which Israel has been doing all [during the war] of course,' Bayram said. He criticised Israel's allies for enabling this situation, stressing that the aid blockade has gone on far too long. 'Israel's control of aid, whether in part or the whole system, is dangerous and should not be accepted, let alone allowed, by its allies for 81 days,' he added. Bayram said it was unacceptable for an occupying power to restrict the flow of basic supplies. 'Israel is an occupier in this scenario and it should not control aid provision to people, let alone life-saving aid like food and water.'

Aitaroun, Aita Al-Shaab Border Towns Bid Farewell to 130 Martyrs, Reiterate Allegiance to Resistance Path

Hezbollah and the massive crowds of the resistance supporters held a solemn funeral to mourn 130 martyrs in the two border towns of Aitaroun and Aita Al-Shaab. The convoys of trucks carrying the holy coffins set off from various Lebanese towns where the pure bodies were temporarily buried due to the Israeli war circumstances. بالفيديو | قافلة شهداء بلدة #عيترون تنطلق من #بيروت إلى جنوب #لبنان — قناة المنار (@TVManar1) February 28, 2025 Funeral prayers were held in the two towns for the pure bodies of the martyrs before they were laid to rest. Moreover, mourners held the flags of the resistance and chanted slogans which underlined allegiance to its path. Member of Loyalty to Resistance parliamentary bloc, Dr. Hasan Fadlallah, underlined the heavy sacrifices made by the border villages, adding that the government is now responsible for the liberation of the occupied territories and the protection of the Lebanese towns from the Zionist aggression. MP Fadlallah stressed that the fight of the border villages against the Israeli enemy has protected the entire country, adding that the enemy could have reached Baabda Palace again without that resistance. For his part, the former minister Mustafa Bayram hailed the sacrifices of the martyrs who sustained the national dignity, adding that the Resistance may never be weakened. The enemy planned to crush the resistance that steadfastly fought and made heavy sacrifices in order to confront the aggression, Bayram added. Bayram stressed that Hezbollah wants the independent government to assume its responsibilities and the Lebanese army to be powerful and fight the enemy. Head of Hezbollah Juristic Council Sheikh Mohammad Yazbek deplored the absence of the state officials from the funeral of the 130 martyrs in Aitaroun and Aita Al-Shaab. Addressing Hezbollah ceremony of receiving condolences on the martyrdom of Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah and Sayyed Hashem Safieddine in Baalbek City, Sheikh Yazbek underscored rejection of any intention to naturalize ties with the Zionist entity at whatever cost. We will pursue the Resistance path that the master of the nation's martyrs sacrificed his blood for.

Labor Ministry handover highlights digital transformation and social security priorities

The handover ceremony at the Labor Ministry took place in the ministry's conference hall, as outgoing minister Moustafa Bayram officially transferred responsibilities to his successor, Mohammad Haidar. In his remarks, Bayram highlighted a milestone achievement during his tenure, announcing that the ministry had undergone a 90% digital transformation—an unprecedented step in Lebanon. Reflecting on his time in office, Bayram noted that the ministry prioritized human dignity despite financial constraints. He stressed that his administration invested in talent maintained impartiality by separating political affiliations from public service, and ensured that the ministry served all Lebanese. Bayram also touched on key accomplishments in social security and the National Employment Office (NEO), particularly in signing multiple agreements for accelerated vocational training programs. For his part, Haidar underscored his preference for action over words, stating that his approach would be defined by results rather than rhetoric. Addressing concerns about his background as a physician leading the labor ministry, he affirmed that a medical perspective is highly relevant, particularly in areas related to labor security, end-of-service benefits, and retirement systems. He also highlighted the importance of safeguarding public health from foreign labor, emphasizing the need for preventive measures to protect both Lebanese workers and the broader community. Haidar pledged to work on improving the minimum wage, noting that wage adjustments depend on multiple economic factors and require coordination across government bodies and economic sectors. He outlined key priorities for his tenure, including enhancing working conditions, defining emerging job opportunities in Lebanon and abroad, and focusing on social security. He stressed the urgent need to reclaim social security funds held by the state, warning that without these resources, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) would be unable to sustain essential services. Haidar concluded by affirming his commitment to close collaboration with ministry employees and stakeholders, vowing to work hand in hand to improve labor conditions and better serve Lebanese workers.
