ESPN teammate chides Stephen A. Smith as new SiriusXM Radio radio show drama continues

The list keeps growing of those annoyed by Stephen A. Smith's new SiriusXM Radio show. ESPN's Joe Fortenbaugh, who co-hosts 'Carlin vs. Joe' weekdays from 12-3 p.m. ET on ESPN Radio, called out Stephen A. Smith on Thursday over his new show that will now compete in that time slot in a back-and-forth that alternated between joking and serious tones. The exchange came on the heels of Michelle Beadle calling out Smith after the reveal that his new show would take her spot on SiriusXM, which led to her and co-host Cody Decker being fired. Advertisement 'This guy, what's with this new radio show?' Fortenbaugh asked Smith on 'First Take' on Thursday. 'You realize you're going up against me and my time slot, aren't ya? What are ya doing?' 5 Joe Fortenbaugh will now be competing against Smith. @awfulannouncing/X Advertisement Smith, whose show is set to launch Sept. 2 on Mad Dog Sports Radio, per The Hollywood Reporter, then defended his actions and attempted to play nice. 'I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sorry to hear that,' Smith said before Game 1 of the NBA Finals. 'I didn't take that into consideration, but opportunities arose, not just for me, myself, but for my production company and I couldn't turn it down. I'm sure you could appreciate that. You're a star here at ESPN, but if you ever need another job, I'm happy to bring you on board, I love you, Joe, you know that.' 5 Molly Qerim (l), Fortenbaugh (c) and Stephen A. Smith (r). @awfulannouncing/X 'First Take' host Molly Qerim then asked Fortenbaugh if she will have to choose who she's going to listen to and that's when the the latter took a dig at Smith. Advertisement 'It's not a decision. You listen to so much of this all day, do you want more of this?' Fortenbaugh said. Qerim responded: 'You're right. I'm not listening to SiriusXM radio, I got you.' 5 Qerim making her point to Smith. @awfulannouncing/X Smith didn't seem to take her remarks in a joking fashion. Advertisement 'I'm not interested in Molly listening to me, I really am not. That's not my target audience,' Smith said. 'There's a whole bunch of ladies out there that show me a hell of a lot more love than she ever would, and a whole bunch of people like Joe who would show me more love as well. I'm not worried.' Qerim then clapped back. 'I got it, your target audience is yes men and yes women, OK, not people that give you the truth,' she said. Smith retorted: 'Call it whatever you want.' 5 Smith has a new radio show coming on Sirius XM. @awfulannouncing/X This exchange adds to a week in which Smith has come under fire from Beadle since his arrival led to her exit. Beadle said she was 'blindsided' and 'really embarrassed' upon learning of the fate of her 'Beadle and Decker' show through a report, and then went after Smith. Smith will also have a second show with SiriusXM. Advertisement 5 Michelle Beadle in 2016. Scott Clarke / ESPN Images 'I don't respect him,' Beadle told Front Office Sports. I think that was sort of the beginning of the end for anything. 'I just don't respect him. I think he gets things wrong all the time. I'm not talking about opinions; those can never be wrong. But factually, when you spread yourself so thin, it's hard to be right. Not a fan.' Smith attempted to distance himself from the manner in which Beadle learned of the developments. I had no idea that folks did not know,' Smith said Wednesday on SiriusXM's VSiN Live program with Patrick Meagher and Dustin Swedelson prior to Beadle's Front Office Sports interview. 'I was told by SiriusXM to wait until this morning on 'The Howard Stern Show' to make the announcement. Whatever communication they had with anybody who's there, where they're staying, where they're being moved to. Who's staying, who's going or whatever. It's none of my business.'

Chris Russo delivers blunt assessment of SiriusXM drama after Stephen A. Smith stunner

Chris Russo weighed in on the drama surrounding Stephen A. Smith's new show on SiriusXM. Speaking on his radio show on Wednesday, Russo said he felt for his colleagues Michelle Beadle and Cody Decker, whose show 'Beadle and Decker' — on Mad Dog Sports Radio — is being replaced by one of Smith's new programs, but chalked up the move to the tough sports radio business. 'It's a very tricky day. Michelle and Cody did nothing wrong based on what I heard today with their enthusiastic replies from their audience. They got a lot more fans than probably anybody thought of, including Sirius. But changes happen, and this is the industry we live in,' Russo said. Russo said he knew that Smith, whom he also works with at ESPN, was coming to SiriusXM for about six weeks. Stephen A. 'I heard a few weeks ago that it wasn't gonna happen because there was no video component. I can tell you all sorts of things because I see Stephen A.' The legendary broadcaster didn't appear too thrilled with how the decision was handled. On Wednesday, Beadle and Decker found out about their show being canceled just a few hours before going on the air. 'As far as how this was handled, because I know that has everybody bothered, there is no easy way to do this,' Russo said. 'I have come to the conclusion… that the best way to do it is when you decide to make a change, just make the change. Don't give the folks who you are changing from the opportunity to say goodbye, it never works. In most cases, this becomes a nasty and an ugly situation. And by all reports, it sounded like a little bit of that today.' Michelle Beadle and Cody Decker at their show, 'Beadle & Decker' at the SiriusXM Studios on August 22, 2023 in New York City. Getty Images 'I do understand that feelings are hurt here,' he continued. 'In the future, you're better off, if you're the company, of just washing your hands of the previous show, paying them what they deserve, finishing out their contracts and letting them go. That's it.' During her radio show on Wednesday, Beadle admitted that it was 'a little bit embarrassing' to find out the way they did. 'I've been in this business for 20-plus years, I've been treated poorly a couple times, this didn't feel good, I'm not gonna lie,' Beadle said. Smith announced his multi-year agreement with SiriusXM during an appearance on 'The Howard Stern Show' on Wednesday, and will begin appearing on their platform in September.

Michelle Beadle doubles down on Stephen A. Smith digs as radio feud intensifies

Michelle Beadle had plenty more to say after Wednesday's news that her former ESPN colleague, Stephen A. Smith, will replace her time slot on Mad Dog Sports Radio with his new Sirius XM show launching this September. Beadle, who went off about it Wednesday on her and Cody Decker's show, 'Beadle and Decker,' doubled down on her comments in an interview with Front Office Sports, acknowledging 'there's no love lost' between her and Smith. 'It's a reminder: We're just all pieces of s–t to someone. If you forgot, there it is,' Beadle said in an interview published Wednesday evening, adding she was 'blindsided' by the news when she found out. Advertisement 4 Michelle Beadle at 'Beadle & Decker' at the SiriusXM Studios in New York City. Getty Images ''The Hollywood Reporter' comes out — and there's his face. I was like, 'I should have known.' That was just kind of gross. I don't care that we're being replaced or what have you. It happens all the time. But a little respect would have been nice. Good Lord. I was totally blindsided. Just really embarrassed, to be honest.' Beadle, who left ESPN in 2019, explained that she's been at odds with the 'First Take' host for years — dating back to 2014, when she called out Smith on social media for controversial comments he made on domestic violence in the wake of ex-NFL player Ray Rice's violent assault on his now-wife. Advertisement 'I don't respect him,' Beadle said of Smith. 'I don't respect his work. He doesn't like me. This goes back to the Ray Rice stuff. He made some really piggish comments on the air. I responded; he got suspended for like two weeks. I think that was sort of the beginning of the end for anything. 'I just don't respect him. I think he gets things wrong all the time. I'm not talking about opinions; those can never be wrong. But factually, when you spread yourself so thin, it's hard to be right. Not a fan.' Smith, who made comments suggesting Rice's wife may have provoked the domestic violence attack, apologized and was suspended for one week by ESPN. 4 Stephen A. 'It was sort of therapeutic … I thought we did a pretty cool show for two years,' she said. Smith, who will offer his takes on the biggest sports headlines, announced his multi-year agreement with SiriusXM during an appearance on 'The Howard Stern Show' on Wednesday, and 'The Hollywood Reporter' followed with additional details. As a part of the deal, Smith will launch a second show, described as a 'weekly current events, pop culture and social commentary-focused show,' in September. 4 Stephen A. We'll have a hockey game to react to — and a basketball game to preview,' she told FOS. 'I can't help the callers. I'll be honest with you: they're crazy. So whatever happens, happens. But we won't entice them to do it, I guess.' Before FOS published Beadle's interview, Smith responded to comments she made on her Wednesday show about being 'blindsided' by the news. Whatever communication they had with anybody who's there, where they're staying, where they're being moved to. Who's staying, who's going or whatever. It's none of my business.' Smith added he 'would never in a million years be unprofessional and inconsiderate of a contemporary or a colleague.' Beadle, who previously hosted ESPN's 'NBA Countdown,' is the host of 'Run It Back,' an NBA-focused talk show on FanDuel TV with former players Chandler Parsons and Lou Williams.

Michelle Beadle blindsided by Stephen A. Smith taking over her SiriusXM slot: ‘A little embarrassing'

Michelle Beadle said it was 'a little embarrassing' to learn that her SiriusXM radio show is being replaced by one of Stephen A. Smith's new programs, which are launching this September. During Wednesday's installment of her and Cody Decker's show, 'Beadle and Decker' — which airs every weekday from 12-3 p.m. ET on the Mad Dog Sports Radio channel — Beadle explained that she and Decker found out that Smith's show would take over their time slot a few hours before the news came out on Wednesday. 'Yeah, so the cat's out of the bag, I guess we're talking about it,' Beadle said, adding that she and Decker were 'coming in hot' and doing the show because they were contractually obligated. 4 Michelle Beadle poses for a photo at SiriusXM at Super Bowl LVIII on February 7, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Getty Images for SiriusXM 'We weren't supposed to, just as a heads up. We were only given a few hours notice, but we weren't told any details, we were promised that no details would be released. We didn't even know who was taking our place in the lineup, just that it was going to be announced that a new show was being added. 'Unbeknownst to us, The Hollywood Reporter, of course, had all the details,' Beadle continued. 'So it was a little embarrassing, I'm not going to lie. I've been in this business for 20-plus years, I've been treated poorly a couple times, this didn't feel good, I'm not gonna lie.' 4 Stephen A. Smith's deal with SiriusXM comes after he signed a five-year, $100 million contract extension with ESPN in March, according to The Athletic. 'To say that I'm excited would be an understatement,' Smith said of his deal with SiriusXM. 'I've been on Mad Dog before, had the time of my life. So I'm loving the fact that I get to reunite with my guy, Mad Dog, on his turf. That, in itself, is a beautiful thing. But to then add a weekly show where I have a potent platform to discuss riveting subjects in the world of Pop Culture, Politics and Social Commentary…let's just say it doesn't get any better than that. 'September can't come soon enough. It's been a long time since I've been in radio…especially going back and forth with the callers. Can't wait to get re-started. Buckle Up! I'm coming!'
