Beaufort County Sheriffs Office talks boating safety ahead of Memorial Day
WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Not only is May 17-23 National Safe Boating Week but Memorial Day weekend is around the corner and Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is making sure people are staying safe out on the water. 'It's the river, It's not the ocean, but we got 130 square miles of water in this county. A lot of people out on the boats, people from out of town that come,' Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Captain Kasey Neal said. 'With that said, people get out in the water, people start drinking, speeding, things like that. Accidents do happen.' The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has a new safety boat they got in August of 2024 through a grant. 'This gives us the ability to get out here and respond to maybe someone who's just fallen overboard, maybe has gone unconscious, maybe is skiing and hit a log here, which is popular in the Tar River, Pamlico River,' Beaufort County Sheriff Scott Hammonds said. 'We have injuries and we just want to be able to be another asset to respond.' Capt. Kasey Neal said just last week officials rescued a man who fell off his boat in Belhaven. 'It could've been avoided. So, when you have a life jacket on, or if you have a kill switch on the boat, especially with life jacket, we've been able to locate that person a lot, lot quicker. So, I don't like things that are avoidable,' Capt. Neal said. Memorial Day weekend is a big weekend for people to go out on the boat with friends and family. 'Alcohol and boating is not the combination. You want to be cold out here on the waterfront, operating on the river,' Sheriff Hammonds said. 'The tragedy of that is injury or death and it is an experience that is thoughtless and reckless.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Hilton Head teacher arrested for alleged sexual relationship with student
A dance teacher from Hilton Head Island High School was arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student. Victoria Katherine Montgomery, 32, of Bluffton, was charged Friday with a felony count of sexual battery with a student who is 18 or older, according to Beaufort County jail records. She was released from jail Saturday morning on a personal recognizance bond. Montgomery was placed on paid administrative leave after the alleged sexual relationship was reported to Principal Steve Schidrich on Wednesday. School officials then notified the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. It is unknown how long the alleged relationship between Montgomery and the student lasted. Officials did not disclose the identify of the student. Montgomery was charged with a felony because she had 'direct supervisory authority' over the student in question. The criminal statute under which she was charged indicates that no 'aggravated force' was used. A now-deleted post from the high school's Facebook page said Montgomery joined the faculty at the start of the 2021-22 school year after moving from Flint, Michigan. She led the school's arts department and was tasked with starting its dance program. In a message sent to students' parents and guardians Thursday, Schidrich said the high school was taking the incident 'very seriously.' 'Be assured the situation is being addressed accordingly in cooperation with law enforcement,' he wrote.

Vengeful son murders stepfather at the dinner table in shocking revenge for shacking up with his mother
A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting his stepfather to death right in front of his horrified mother. Daniel Adame-Guatemala, 25, was identified as the suspect in the killing of 29-year-old Christian Hernandez on February 24, 2022, the same day Hernandez was found dead in his trailer home at the Godwin Mobile Home Park in Beaufort, South Carolina. Hernandez, who had multiple fatal gunshot wounds, was married to Adame-Guatemala's mother, who identified her son as the killer. The mother, the only witness to the crime, told police that Adame-Guatemala emerged from a bathroom while they were eating dinner at the table and began firing a 9mm handgun at Hernandez and in the vicinity of his mother. Adame-Guatemala had prior convictions for public disorderly conduct and second-degree domestic violence. He lived with his mother and stepfather for several months after his release from prison for those earlier charges. After the shooting, Adame-Guatemala took the family pickup truck and spent the next several months on the run the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, the US Marshals Service and Mexican authorities. He first went to Mexico, where he had relatives, but later went all the way down to South America, according to police. Roughly four months after Hernandez's death, Adame-Guatemala was captured in June 2023 by US Border Patrol agents when he tried to get back into the US at a checkpoint in Hildago, Texas. Given the amount of evidence against him, Adame-Guatemala agreed on Wednesday to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and an illegal weapons charge. 'The violent death of a loved one must be terribly excruciating – and doubly so when that death is at the hand of a family member,' said Deputy Solicitor Mary Jones of the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Office, who prosecuted the case. 'It is not clear why the defendant in this case acted in such a violent manner. However, such violence makes it clear he belongs in prison.' Jones added that the family cooperated with police and aided in Adame-Guatemala's prosecution. 'They did not relish the prospect of testifying against him. Because the defendant also took responsibility for his crime by pleading to voluntary manslaughter, we agreed this was an appropriate resolution and merciful for his family,' she said. Specifically, Adame-Guatemala entered an 'Alford Plea,' which means he maintains his innocence while acknowledging that if his case went to trial, there would likely be enough solid evidence to convict him. As with all plea bargains, an 'Alford Plea' is not a right the defendant is entitled to, so it must be something that is offered and agreed to by the prosecution and the judge. Circuit Judge Martha M. Rivers handed down the 20-year sentence. However, with the amount of time he's already served in pre-trial detention, he'll be spending a little more than 18 years in prison.
