Beetlejuice 3 director wonders if he's been ‘replaced' after development update
Legendary Hollywood director Tim Burton is questioning if he's been replaced after 'nobody told him' about plans for Beetlejuice 3. The 66-year-old filmmaker, who directed the original 1988 comedy horror classic and its 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, has played down speculation that a third movie is definitely on the cards. Nostalgia for the original combined with the return of Michael Keaton as the titular self-proclaimed 'Ghost with the Most' and a starry supporting cast helped propel the sequel to $451,100,000 at the box office. Earlier this year, Warner Bros Pictures co-chairman/CEO Mike De Luca had insisted development on Beetlejuice 3 was 'imminent'. Upon hearing this, Burton told The Hollywood Reporter: 'Really? Nobody told me. Maybe I've been replaced.' Jenna Ortega, who appeared in the second film last year, quipped: 'Maybe I've been, too. Maybe [her character] Astrid dies and goes to heaven instead [of the films' Netherworld]. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'They should just take Baby Beetlejuice on tour and send him to Hawaii.' Burton pointed out that more than three decades passed between the first two films in the franchise, joking that 'the odds are not good' for a follow-up any time soon because he'd be 105 by then. The filmmaker added: 'I really, really enjoyed making this one, and [Warner Bros] didn't even really want to do it. 'We did it the same way I did the first one, with the actors doing improv. It was beautiful to see some of the old cast and have Jenna. But it's like trying to re-create the Wednesday dance scene. I love the characters, but I don't necessarily see it.' Burton also seemed to suggest he'd be unwilling to allow another director to step in and do it instead, as he feels 'very proprietary about everything I do, even if I don't own the characters'. He admitted too that 'when they did the [Beetlejuice Broadway musical], I got p****d'. Meanwhile, Ortega noted she would 'never' want to return to the Beetlejuice world without Burton steering the ship as it would be 'really wrong to get behind that project'. 'Without him involved, what is it? It is what it is because of Tim. There's no other film you can compare Beetlejuice to. So why would you do that? That would be a tad disrespectful.' The 22-year-old played the daughter of Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, who is initially unwilling to entertain her mother's psychic abilities as someone still haunted by Beetlejuice. After a family tragedy, three generations of the family return home to Winter River. But Astrid turns their lives upside down when she accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife. She has also collaborated with Burton on Netflix series Wednesday, where she plays the lead role, and which returns for season two next month. It's a project Burton previously revealed 're-energised' him after he became disillusioned with the movie industry. Back in April, Warner Bros executive De Luca had claimed plans were moving along for sequels for both Minecraft and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. He told Deadline: 'Imminently. The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently.' De Luca insisted the studio was looking to capitalise on both film's success. More Trending He explained: 'To have two franchises emerge from our leadership team with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Minecraft, I feel like we're ahead of schedule. 'Now we're trying to step on the gas, to double, to quadruple that kind of success.' Metro contacted has Warner Bros for comment. Got a story? Jenna Ortega And Tim Burton Said This About Wednesday Season 2
Wednesday Season 2 will feature 8 episodes in 2 parts, with Part 1 premiering on August 6. The halls of Nevermore Academy are set to light up once again as Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton continue their creative team-up. Based on the character of Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family comics, Netflix's Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, has created significant buzz since the streaming giant announced the spooky mystery comedy's comeback for a second season. Why Wednesday? Before the premiere of Wednesday Season 2, director Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and discussed their upcoming projects, the character of Wednesday, and everything in between. When asked about what made them initially excited about doing the series, Tim Burton replied, 'I've never done television, so it was the idea of exploring something on a longer time frame, and she's an interesting character." Replying to the question, Jenna Ortega stated, 'She's also one of the few protagonists who can get away with that, aside from villains—who tend not to have emotional growth or depth." Ortega further mentioned that when she was 14, she auditioned for a Wednesday animated movie but did not get the part and recalled telling her mother, 'That would be cool to be her, though." About The Character Before Ortega was cast as Wednesday, Burton had warned the showrunners that if they didn't find Wednesday, there would be no show. Revealing why Burton cast Ortega for this role, he stated, 'Jenna's like a silent movie actor, and what I enjoy about her character is not so much the dialogue but the way she presents herself." Talking about the character, Ortega revealed how specific the character was, right down to not blinking. 'Your eye does start twitching. There were a couple of setups in season one that looked like I was crying because I was trying to keep my eyes open," Ortega added. Wednesday, Seasons 2 and 3 Season 1 of Wednesday generated 252 million views globally, making the series Netflix's biggest English-language series of all time. After becoming a global phenomenon, Wednesday is all set to be back with another season. Wednesday Season 2 will feature 8 episodes in 2 parts. Part 1 will premiere on August 6, 2025, followed by Part 2 on September 3. Before the premiere of Season 2, a third season of Wednesday has already been confirmed. The early announcement confirms the show's strong popularity and plans. Other Projects Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega have also teamed up in Beetlejuice 2. During the interview, Burton was asked about the development of Beetlejuice 3, a horror comedy movie. Both Burton and Ortega claimed no knowledge of the third part of the movie. Although Warner Bros. seems hopeful of Beetlejuice 3, the director and the star are not sure yet. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 13:35 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Tim Burton addresses Beetlejuice 3 reports

Netflix renews Wednesday season 3, explores Addams Family spinoff with Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega
Netflix has officially renewed its hit series Wednesday for a third season, with early discussions underway for a potential spinoff based on other Addams Family characters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The announcement comes ahead of season two's premiere on August 6. In their first joint interview, director Tim Burton and star Jenna Ortega reflected on the show's success, the intensity of production, and navigating public scrutiny. Ortega, now also a producer on the series, described the early filming experience as 'chaotic and stressful,' having started at just 17. 'I don't think I've ever shot a scene that hasn't kept me up at night,' she admitted. Despite these challenges, Wednesday became Netflix's most-watched English-language series, racking up 252 million views globally. Ortega's comments in a past podcast, where she mentioned changing lines to better fit the character, sparked controversy. Reflecting on the incident, she said, 'In no way did I mean to come across that way… it was a good lesson.' Burton, who directed both Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, praised Ortega's instinctual understanding of the role. 'You need this weird internal strength and clarity… you can't manufacture it,' he said. Showrunner Alfred Gough echoed this sentiment, noting, 'She has a 360-degree view… you don't find that with most actors.' With an expanded cast in season two — including Steve Buscemi and Billie Piper — the team has leaned into a bigger scale and more creative freedom. 'Netflix has a lot more trust this time around,' Ortega said. Beyond the show, both Ortega and Burton criticized the growing influence of AI in entertainment. Ortega warned that AI-generated content creates 'junk food for the brain,' while Burton said it left him feeling like something had been taken away from his work. While Warner Bros. hinted at early development for Beetlejuice 3, Burton stated he hasn't been officially approached. 'It took 35 years to make the second one… I know those odds aren't good,' he said. Ortega firmly added she wouldn't return to the project without Burton at the helm: 'It is what it is because of Tim.' As for the future of Wednesday, neither Burton nor Ortega are making long-term plans. 'I don't even have plans for tomorrow,' Ortega said. Burton agreed: 'Me either.'
