Former Gonzaga Guard Lands with Phoenix Suns Ahead of NBA Summer League

Former Gonzaga Guard Lands with Phoenix Suns Ahead of NBA Summer League originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Gonzaga guard Khalif Battle has agreed to a deal to play for the Phoenix Suns, according to Jacob Myers of League Him. Advertisement Terms of the deal were not specified, although it is expected this is an invitation for Battle to join the Suns during Las Vegas Summer League starting July 10 at the Thomas & Mack Center at UNLV. Battle becomes the third former Zag to sign a pro contract this offseason, joining Ryan Nembhard - who signed a two-way contract with the Dallas Mavericks - and Ben Gregg, who will play for the Boston Celtics in summer league. Nolan Hickman is the lone Zag graduate yet to sign with an NBA team post-NBA draft. Battle wrapped up his college career with one season at Gonzaga, where he started 31 out of 35 games and averaged 13.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He shot a career-best 53.3% on two pointers as well as 34.7% from three on nearly five attempts per game, and an astonishing 93.2% from the free throw line which was third best in the country. Advertisement Battle's 6'5 frame, tenacious ability to attack the rim and get to the free throw line, and excellent athleticism made him an intriguing prospect, but his advanced age and inconsistent outside shooting prevented him from being selected in the 2025 NBA draft last week. Instead he'll join a Phoenix team that is trying to find its identity after sending Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets in a deal that brought back Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green, and a bevy of draft picks. Battle will get a chance to prove his worth during summer league, and the unstructured nature of the event should allow his hell-raising style of play to thrive. It would not be a surprise to see the New Jersey native put up big numbers for Phoenix, which could lead to the team putting him on an Exhibit 10 deal and bringing him aboard the Valley Suns in the G-League for the 2025-26 season. Former Gonzaga Forward Ben Gregg Inks Deal with Eastern Conference Powerhouse

Former Gonzaga Forward Ben Gregg Inks Deal with Eastern Conference Powerhouse originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The conclusion of the NBA draft always results in a flurry of undrafted players getting signed by NBA clubs. Some end up on two-way contracts, meaning they'll split time in the NBA and the G-League, some end up on Exhibit 10 contracts which guarantees them a spot on the team's G-League roster, and others are simply invited to join the team in Summer League in Las Vegas. Advertisement The latter is the case for former Gonzaga forward Ben Gregg, who will join the Boston Celtics in summer league - where he will compete in an attempt to earn a two-way or exhibit 10 contract heading into training camp and the 2025-26 NBA season. Gregg did not participate in any of the big pre-draft events like the NBA draft combine, G-League elite camp, or Portsmouth Invitational, but he did have quite a few individual workouts with teams. Boston will get a longer look at the 6'9 forward, who averaged 9 points and 5.3 rebounds the past two seasons at Gonzaga while starting 39 out of 70 games and shooting a ridiculous 73.1% on two pointers and 76% from the free throw line. Advertisement Gregg's professional future largely hinges on his ability to knock down outside shots, a skill that adds tremendous value to his profile as a modern NBA stretch four. Gregg shot 37.7% from three in 2022-23 and again in 2023-24, but an ugly 6-34 (17.6%) slump resulted in just a 27.1% clip last year for the Zags. If the big man shoots it well in summer league it could help him snag a valuable exhibit 10 contract which would land him with Boston's G-League affiliate in Maine. Gregg joins Ryan Nembhard (Dallas) in inking his first NBA contract this week, while fellow Zag seniors Khalif Battle and Nolan Hickman remain unsigned as of this writing. Blazers Host Clackamas High School and Gonzaga Star Ben Gregg for Pre-Draft Workout

Blazers Host Clackamas High School and Gonzaga Star Ben Gregg for Pre-Draft Workout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Ryan Nembhard is not the only former Gonzaga basketball star working out with teams before the 2025 NBA draft later this month. Advertisement Ben Gregg, who starred at local Clackamas high school prior to his five year career in Spokane, is one of six players working out with the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday. Joining Gregg in the workout will be forwards Jamiya Neal (Creighton) and Mohamed Diawara (Cholet) as well as guards Damari Monsanto (UTSA), Cameron Hildreth (Wake Forest) and Caleb Grill (Missouri). The Blazers have just one pick in the upcoming draft, No. 11 overall, and are likely looking at this crop of players as potential summer league additions who could compete for a roster spot and/or a two-way contract during training camp. Of the six players on this list, the only one showing up on mock drafts with any regularity is Grill. It's not uncommon for teams to use early pre-draft workouts to evaluate potential undrafted talent for hidden gems, and/or to bring in local guys. Advertisement In this case Gregg is both after he starred at nearby Clackamas high school before embarking on a five year career with Gonzaga, going from end of the bench to key starter over the past half decade. Gregg started 20 out of 35 games last year for the Zags, averaging 9.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while leading the WCC in two point field goal percentage at 72.9%. Gregg's three point shot fell from 37.7% as a sophomore and junior to just 27.1% last year, which seriously hurt his NBA draft stock. At 6'9 with a nose for offensive rebounds, strong defensive instincts, and good touch around the rim, Gregg's ability to space the floor was a key hinge for his pro prospects. While the odds of him going in the second round remain slim, working out with NBA teams is a great sign Gregg will get a chance to prove himself in summer league and could land him a spot in the G-League next playing at the Chiles Center with the Rip City Remix, a building he has historically played extremely well at including a 24 point performance this past season on perfect 10-10 shooting. Gonzaga forward Ben Gregg to work out for Boston Celtics

Gonzaga forward Ben Gregg to work out for Boston Celtics The Boston Celtics may not be playing in the postseason, but they are anything but idle with the 2025 NBA draft coming on June 25. The Celtics have been working out prospects for the two picks they have, No. 28 in the first round and No. 32 in the second, and among the players the Celtics will bring in is Gonzaga forward Ben Gregg, per Gregg himself. Speaking at a workout for the Portland Trail Blazers, the Gonzaga swingman shared that he will work out for the Celtics on Wednesday, and has gotten feedback from a few teams he has already met with. "My ability to stretch the floor as a big man, that's been a strength of mine throughout these workouts," he offered, noting NBA-level defense is an area where he needs to get better. "Guys at this level are so fast and athletic," said the Gonzaga alum. "So just being able to stay in front of quicker guys has been the main thing for me." A rough year from beyond the arc likely hurt his stock, with the former Bulldog hitting just 27.1% from 3 last season, compared to 37.7% the prior two campaigns. A 6-foot-10 forward who logged 9.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 35 games with Gonzaga last season, Gregg could be a sneaky good get for Boston as a developmental project for the future. He is not mocked in either round by most analysts, and could be a player Boston is watching as a player to sign if Gregg doesn't get picked up by the end of the second round, or if the Celtics trade back. The former Bulldog plays more in the midrange and cutting to the cup, but his past success from deep makes for an intriguing mix for his size.
