1st Unofficial Test: Karun Nair nears a double century, Sarfaraz Khan silences critics as India A post 409/3 vs England Lions
NEW DELHI: Karun Nair oozed elegance with a sublime unbeaten 186, issuing a timely reminder to the Gautam Gambhir-led team management against a lacklustre England Lions side on the opening day of the first 'Unofficial' Test in Canterbury on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Although traditionally slotted at No. 4 or lower in first-class cricket, Nair looked at complete ease throughout his masterclass innings, rendering the Lions attack — including their Test spinner Rehan Ahmed — largely ineffective. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! India A batters capitalised on an underwhelming bowling effort on a docile pitch, but the lack of resistance from the Lions and the nature of the surface may not offer an accurate gauge of Test-level conditions. Now representing Vidarbha, the Bengaluru-born Nair put his county experience with Northamptonshire to good use, notching up his 24th first-class century. His classy knock, laced with 24 boundaries and a six, couldn't have come at a better time as the Indian think-tank weighs up its options for the opening Test against England at Leeds on June 20. , mixed audacity with finesse but fell short of a well-deserved hundred after doing all the hard work. Together, Sarfaraz and Nair stitched a 181-run stand for the third wicket. Later, Dhruv Jurel joined the party with an unbeaten 82 off 104 balls, forming a 177-run unbroken partnership with Nair to end the day on a commanding note for India A. 'I don't want to be a one-season wonder': Punjab Kings' Shashank Singh Ironically, much like in the selection race for the Test squad where Nair edged out Sarfaraz, he once again outshone the Mumbai batter on a pitch offering little for the bowlers. The Lions attack, toothless for the most part, leaked 51 boundaries and three sixes across 90 overs — an alarming stat. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal (24 off 55) saw off the first hour but failed to convert the start, while (8) once again raised questions about his suitability for the top level despite being handed another opportunity. Despite the greenish tinge on the Canterbury County ground surface, there was barely any lateral movement. Nair, with ample time to play his shots, was ruthless on anything short and majestic with square-of-the-wicket play. His pull shots were particularly commanding, while against off-spinner Dan Mousley, he reverse-swept with nonchalant ease. Why no Shreyas Iyer for England tour? Coach Gautam Gambhir opens up Rehan Ahmed had a forgettable outing, conceding 95 runs in 16 overs. Sarfaraz took him on confidently — reaching his fifty with an inside-out boundary and later lofting him straight for a six. Against pace, he was equally inventive, using the bounce to ramp deliveries over the slips. Sarfaraz eventually fell chasing a wide one down leg-side off Hull, a wicket even the Lions bowlers didn't seem to expect. But the joy was fleeting for the home side as Nair and Jurel pressed on relentlessly, showing no signs of easing up.

‘Proud to have you': Anand Mahindra celebrates Kush Maini's F2 breakthrough
Kush Maini scripted a watershed moment in Indian motorsport on Saturday, becoming the first Indian driver to win a Formula 2 race at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix. The 24-year-old clinched victory in the Sprint Race with a commanding lights-to-flag performance for Dams Lucas Oil, sending a strong message to the paddock and delighting fans back home. Among the first to congratulate Maini was business magnate Anand Mahindra, who took to social media to laud the achievement. "You are standing tall, @kmainiofficial, and the country stands tall with you," Mahindra wrote. "Kush Maini making history as the 1st Indian winner of an F2 race in Monte Carlo… We are proud to have you on our team at @MahindraRacing." Maini started the Sprint Race from pole position courtesy of Formula 2's reverse-grid rule, which flipped the top ten qualifiers for Saturday's event. Having originally qualified 10th for the Feature Race, the Bengaluru-born racer seized the opportunity with a faultless drive on the notoriously unforgiving streets of Monte Carlo. From the moment the lights went out, Maini remained composed under pressure, defending his lead with clinical precision across 30 gruelling laps. The narrow confines of the circuit, where overtaking is a rarity, left no room for error—a challenge Maini met head-on to claim a milestone victory. Speaking after the race, a visibly emotional Maini described the win as a 'dream come true' and thanked his team and supporters. 'We kept believing, and it paid off,' he said on the podium, as the Indian national anthem rang out across Monaco. Now in his second full season in Formula 2, Maini has been striving for a breakthrough in what has been a challenging 2025 campaign. Saturday's result marks a turning point and comes at a critical juncture as he aims to build consistency and gather points in the races ahead. Among those celebrating the win was Gautam Singhania, who was present at the circuit and met Maini in the pit lane following the race. Singhania's JK Racing and TVS Racing have long supported the young driver, playing a key role in his development through the junior categories of international racing. Currently serving as a reserve driver for the BWT Alpine F1 Team, Maini's progress is being closely followed by stakeholders in Indian motorsport. His Monaco victory not only elevates his stock but also raises hopes of a full-time Formula 1 seat in the future. Maini will now turn his attention to Sunday's Feature Race, where he will start from 10th on the grid. With momentum on his side, he will be aiming to deliver another strong performance before the paddock moves to Barcelona next weekend. Regardless of what lies ahead, Maini's maiden Formula 2 win at Monaco has already cemented his place in history—marking a proud moment for Indian motorsport and igniting inspiration for a new generation of aspiring racers.
