I-TEAM: 18-year-old shot at Cuyahoga County Fair during fight
CUYAHOGA COUNTY — The FOX 8 I-TEAM is uncovering more about gunfire late Saturday night at the Cuyahoga County Fair. Frantic police radio traffic showed officers calling for back-up and an ambulance while reporting 'shots fired' and a person shot. Body of teen who fell into Black River found According to Berea Police, around 11 p.m. Saturday, a group of about 10 young adults got into a physical altercation at the fair during which an 18-year-old male was shot in the torso. He was treated at the scene and then taken to a hospital, police said. Two 'suspicious males' were seen running to a vehicle in the parking lot, according to police. That vehicle was stopped by Middleburg Heights Police and a male who was in possession of a firearm was arrested. 'At this time, it is unknown if the male that was arrested was involved in the shooting inside the fair event.,' the statement from Berea Police said. A spokesperson for the Cuyahoga County Fair did not respond to specific questions from the I-Team and, instead, issued a vague statement. 'We have been made aware of gunfire that has occurred on our fairgrounds on Saturday Evening, August 9, 2025. It will be with due diligence that we make media outlets aware of the situation that occurred as soon as more details become available,' Candyce Traci wrote. In an updated news release Sunday morning, Traci said details were still being gathered and assured guests that safety at the fair will continue to be a priority. 'Even though this occurrence on our grounds is heartbreaking for the Cuyahoga County Fair Board, fair safety for those who choose to visit our fairgrounds remains a top priority for us,' the statement said. The statement also said, 'Fair Board Personnel are cooperating with all local law enforcement agencies at this time and have been provided an official update that the fair will be open (Sunday) starting at 12Noon through 10PM as scheduled.' New video: Police continue investigation into Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds shooting
BEREA, Ohio (WJW) – A shooting at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds on Saturday is still being investigated by Berea police, who are looking to bring the person responsible to justice. The FOX 8 I-Team first reported the shooting on the fairgrounds which occurred around 11 p.m. on Saturday. An 18-year-old male was wounded but is expected to survive. Middleburg Heights police arrested a person of interest who was found in possession of a gun, but police aren't certain at this stage that person is the shooter. Berea police said a group of 10 individuals were fighting near food vendor operations when someone fired one shot, hitting an 18-year-old male in the abdomen. Cedar Point's Power Tower evacuated after cable fails 'The one shot that was heard, this group dispersed,' Berea Police Lt. Tom Walker said. 'Officers were immediately on scene with no description of the firearm, no description of the suspect. We do believe it was a close-quarter gunshot injury.' Walker said the injured male was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital. He is expected to recover, but he did not get a good look at the person who shot him, according to police. Walker said police immediately searched for a suspect, and two suspicious males were spotted running to a vehicle in the parking lot. Matching a plate number taken from the scene, Middleburg Heights police stopped that vehicle and a firearm was found on a male subject. 'A 19-year-old male was arrested in possession of a 9mm firearm,' Walker said. 'We're not sure if that's linked to this event. So, we're trying to work forensically with that gun that was recovered. We did recover a bullet fragment, cell phone video and are trying to figure out exactly what happened in this incident.' The FOX 8 I-Team also reports another firearm was found by a park attendee in the parking lot on Sunday. That weapon will be tested, comparing forensics and ballistics to determine if it is connected to the shooting. Fair organizers said they ramped up security on Sunday after the shooting and are considering making changes next year, after the first shooting at the fair since 1904. 'People understand, things happen,' fair public relations and media ambassador Candyce Traci said. 'It's not what we wanted to happen.' Jury acquits Cleveland activists of extortion, intimidation Organizers say attendance on Sunday was near record levels despite the shooting Saturday. Berea police said in Ohio it is legal to carry a firearm on fairgrounds in the open area but not inside buildings. Walker said the shooter may have been under the legal age to carry regardless. 'It's just unfortunate that we have these … minor physical altercations that turn into such, you know, unacceptable violence with firearms to try to solve a dispute or a problem,' Walker said. Berea police are asking the public to come forward with tips. 'Call our dispatch line and they'll forward it to our department at 440-234-1234,' Walker said. There are a lot of videos on social media showing the altercation leading to the shooting. Investigators are hopeful those videos will fill in the gaps. MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) — Several area police departments escorted the body of a Berea police officer to a Middleburg Heights funeral home after his unexpected death Saturday morning. Sunday afternoon. Officers were also spotted standing at attention in the parking lot. According to the post, Esposito has served the Berea Police Department in many roles since he started in 2011. 'Sgt. Esposito served as a member of the Southwest Enforcement Bureau; he was a field training officer, community engagement officer, school resource officer, defensive tactics instructor, and department range officer,' the post said. Berea police announce unexpected death of ‘valued' officer
BEREA, Ohio (WJW) – The Berea Police Department announced that one of its officers unexpectedly lost his life early Saturday morning. According to the Berea Police Department Facebook page, Sergeant Ean Esposito suffered an 'unexpected medical emergency' and passed away early on Saturday. According to the Facebook post, Esposito has served the Berea Police Department in many roles since he started in 2011. 'Sgt. Esposito served as a member of the Southwest Enforcement Bureau; he was a field training officer, community engagement officer, school resource officer, defensive tactics instructor, and department range officer,' the post said. 'Sgt. Esposito was instrumental in updating the department's emergency operation plan and took pride in emergency preparedness for both the department and community.' According to the police department, Esposito is also a veteran of the United States Army. 'Sgt. Esposito will be missed by all who knew and were touched by his engaging spirit,' the post said. 'Please keep his family, friends, and fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers.' Esposito's family asks that donations be directed to the West Tactical Officer Foundation.
