'We rebuilt it custom for our needs,' Michael Chanin, CEO of Cherry Street Energy, told the Atlanta Business Chronicle in an interview. expand Michael Chanin, CEO of Cherry Street Energy. Byron E. Small The company wanted to incorporate electric vehicle charging stations and battery storage to be able to showcase services to potential customers, he continued. Also, it needed space for its compost and recycling programs, as well as closer proximity to the Beltline for employees commuting to work. 'We wanted to be in this area of town where we could combine commercial office space with warehouse space that had access to a lot of the amenities and proximity to a major university for recruitment and talent,' Chanin said about the building, which is less than a mile away from Georgia Tech's campus. To find the right space for the new headquarters, the company relied on the help of JLL as its lease negotiator and on the support of Asana Partners, the landlords of the building. The solar school, one of the novel features of the headquarters, aims to set individuals on the pathway for careers in the renewable energy industry. By the end of the 10-week program, participants earn a certification provided by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners, Chanin said. 'We anticipate doubling again in the coming year,' Chanin said. 'The momentum in our market for what we're doing is at an inflection point of growth, so we're working hard to meet that demand and have the appropriate space … to attract the right talent and make sure that our employees have the right elements.'

Best in Atlanta Real Estate: 999 Peachtree
Editor's note: This is a preview of Atlanta Business Chronicle's Best in Atlanta Real Estate Awards, recognizing the top commercial real estate projects and deals in 2024. The event will be held on April 24. To purchase tickets, visit the Chronicle's events website. The window-covered façade of 28-story 999 Peachtree remains largely unchanged after renovations by Piedmont Office Realty Trust. Inside, however, the lower two floors have been entirely reimagined. Improvements aim to meet all the needs of the modern office user and include a new lobby, fitness center, outdoor seating area, tenant lounge and outdoor conference space. Piedmont generally targets tenants for this property that value a high-quality, energized environment. An architecture firm, insurance company and real estate agency are just the start of the list of tenants, as demand from tech companies rises. The remodel also seeks to capture the attention of Buckhead tenants moving into Midtown that are looking for an upscale, boutique experience for employees and guests. 'What we were envisioning at 999 Peachtree is the GM building of Atlanta,' said Piedmont CEO Brent Smith. 'It really is the preeminent office building in an iconic location in New York, and we feel 999 Peachtree can embody that same thing here.' Project name: 999 Peachtree Address: 999 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta Project size: 622,000 square feet Investment size: More than $20 million Started construction: Spring 2023 Opened: Fall 2024 The renovations of 999 Peachtree aren't benefitting solely its tenants but also the surrounding community. The Michelin star restaurant, Lazy Betty, has relocated to the base of the building. This summer, Spiller Park Coffee will also open in the building. 'Core to Piedmont strategy is taking what I would call unloved buildings that haven't been renovated or reimagined and really thinking about how they can be experienced by our clients and the community around them. And that's exactly what we set out to do at 999 Peachtree,' said Smith. The revamp aims to create an arrival experience imbued with a sense of hospitality and service that rivals the best hotels. To achieve this, Piedmont envisioned bringing the Atlantan aesthetic of being a city in a forest to 999 Peachtree. One means of bringing the outside in is through the two-story glass curtain wall in the façade, which saturates the lobby with light. Five realistic-looking fake trees further serve to envelop the lobby, while a large art piece by Atlanta-based Todd Murphy shows off a forest scene. 'As you look out onto that Peachtree landscape, and you see the trees on the outside of the building mimicking the trees on the inside of the building, it creates an immersive experience,' said Smith.

Editor's note: This is a preview of Atlanta Business Chronicle's Best in Atlanta Real Estate Awards, recognizing the top commercial real estate projects and deals in 2024. The event will be held on April 24. To purchase tickets, visit the Chronicle's events website. California-based Archer Aviation is on a mission to revolutionize urban transportation. Last December, the maker of the new Midnight electric vertical take-off-and-landing aircraft cut the ribbon on a $65 million manufacturing facility in Covington. GET TO KNOW YOUR CITY Find Local Events Near You Connect with a community of local professionals. Explore All Events The first aircraft structure was loaded onto the production line in February, Glen Burks, vice president of operations, said. The company intends to build 650 aircraft annually by 2030. A future second phase of construction includes a 550,000-square-foot facility at the property to increase production to 2,300 aircraft annually. Archer's business model focuses on providing fast and efficient transport in areas with heavy traffic congestion, such as Los Angeles and Miami. Last year, the company announced a partnership with Falcon Aviation to offer flights between the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Burks said Archer's all-electric aircraft is designed to transport people from 'point A to point B' in a fraction of the time of a car — and will do so quietly, compared to a traditional helicopter. The cost is comparable to rideshare options such as Uber Black, he said. The Midnight will fly at around 2,500 feet in airspace — well below typical commercial flight paths. Separately, the company secured a $1.5 billion order for Midnight aircraft from United Airlines, Burks said. The 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility's taxiway is adjacent to Covington Municipal Airport. Project name: Archer Aviation Address: 249 Williams Road, Covington Project size: 96 acres, 400,000 square feet (phase one) Investment size: Planned $118 million over 10 years Timeline: Construction of phase one, March 2023 to December 2024 The city beat out 259 other locations for the facility, Burks said. 'You can go from the beach to the mountains within a five-hour window of time,' Burks said, adding that Georgia is business-friendly and has a rich pipeline of talent in its education system. Archer has a $37 million incentive deal with the state that includes a commitment to create 1,000 jobs and invest $118 million over 10 years. Before opening, Archer flew 12 students from Newton County Schools to California to learn about the company's technology. 'We want people to be proud about their hometown and … community and [value] the talent that Archer will bring,' Burks said.
