French Open 2025: Yuki Bhambri - Robert Galloway pair in third round

Yuki Bhambri reacts during his doubles match at the 2025 French Open. (Instagram) Paris: India's Yuki Bhambri and American Robert Galloway weathered an up-and-down opening set before pulling through in two-hours and 32-minutes with a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-3 upset win over the seventh seeds Croatia's Nikola Mektic and Kiwi Michael Venus in the French Open men's doubles second round. Bhambri and Galloway, both 32, and ranked 41 and 38, started well, jumping to a 3-0 lead and extending it to 4-2 before the seeded combine hit back with some sharp tennis. In the second set tie-break, Mektic and Venus led 3-1, and at 4-3 were just three points from wrapping up the match, but Bhambri and Galloway won six of the next seven points to level set scores. 'The first set in particular was up-and-down, we went ahead and couldn't sustain it, but that happens on a clay court. It is difficult to consistently hold serve,' he said, adding, 'the second set was more consistent, both teams held serve and we did well in the tie-break.' Bhambri, who played alongside Frenchman Albano Olivetti at Roland Garros last year, falling in the first hurdle, has taken some significant strides in his game this year, which includes making the third round here for the first time. Yuki Bhambri Wins, Rithvik Bollipalli Loses In French Open Men's Doubles Opening Round

India's Yuki Bhambri and his American partner Robert Galloway secured a hard-fought victory but Rithvik Bollipalli's search for his maiden win in a Grand Slam main draw continued in the French Open men's doubles opening round, here on Wednesday. Bhambri and Galloway edged out Robin Haase and Hendrik Jebens 6-3 6-7(8) 6-3 in a fast-paced high-quality first round match. However, Bollipalli and his Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos suffered a tame straight set defeat. Canada's Gabriel Diallo and Briton Jacob Fearnley, who knocked out Stanislas Wawrinka in the singles on Monday, dominated the contest, winning 6-0 6-2 in just 56 minutes. Bhambri was a live wire at the net, dispatching some delectable volley winners and was also solid with his strokes from the back of the court. His court coverage was also tremendous. They saved two set points in the second set tie-break and had a match point but Bhambri's forehand kissed the net. Haase succeeded in stretching the game to the decider. Bhambri and Galloway broke Jebens in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead and consolidated the break. Bhambri ended the match with a angled volley winner. Bollipalli and Barrientos, who won the ATP 250 Chile Open in March, struggled to serve well and make returns, gifting away easy points to their rivals. Often the Indo-Colombian combo left gap on the court for their rivals to exploit. The Indian was broken early with Diallo and Fearnley making some superb returns on his serve. His partner Barrientos too struggled badly to get going and in no time the Canadian-British pair had raced to a commanding 4-0 lead. Fearnley's ferocious forehands from the baseline were already too hot to handle and Bollipalli's lack of control while serving made it too easy for the Canadian-British team. The Indian struggled to pick a half-volley at 15-30 to offer two set points to the rivals and made a volley error on the following point to surrender the opening set. There was no twist in the tale except that Barrientos managed to hold his serve in the second game of the second set while Diallo and Fearnley continued to spit fire. Bollipalli served a double fault to be down by a match point but saved the chance in game eight. Barrientos could not return a powerful Diallo forehand and then sent a ball wide on the next match point. Later in the day, India's Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji will also be in action in the men's doubles.

Yuki Bhambri-Robert Galloway crash out in first round at Geneva Open

Genev: India's Yuki Bhambri and his American partner Robert Galloway suffered an early exit at the Geneva Open after losing their opening-round encounter against unseeded Germans, Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner, on Wednesday. The second-seeded Indo-American duo went down 6-7(3), 4-6 in a closely-contested Round of 16 match at the ATP 250 clay-court tournament, which serves as a final stop before the French Open. The loss marks another disappointing chapter in Bhambri's European clay-court campaign. Despite showing flashes of form with a runner-up finish at the Bordeaux Challenger last week, Bhambri and Galloway were unable to sustain their momentum in Geneva. The pair split €3,240 in prize money, but were denied ATP ranking points due to the early-round defeat. The first set proved to be a tight contest, with neither side able to break serve. But Schnaitter and Wallner held their nerve in the tiebreak, clinching it 7-3 to take the lead. The German duo maintained their composure in the second set, breaking once and serving efficiently to close out the match in straight sets. For Bhambri, the Geneva Open was another opportunity to gain rhythm ahead of the Roland Garros qualifiers and other clay events. However, the 31-year-old has struggled to find consistency on the red dirt this season. Prior to Bordeaux, Bhambri faced first-round exits in Monte Carlo (partnering Alexei Popyrin), the ATP 500 event in Munich, the Madrid Masters, and the Rome Masters. With the French Open looming, Bhambri will be hoping to regroup and put together a stronger showing. Despite recent setbacks, his run in Bordeaux hinted at potential, and the seasoned doubles player will be eager to convert that into more consistent results on tour. The Geneva Open, offering a total prize purse of €596,035, continues to feature strong doubles and singles line-ups as players fine-tune their game for the challenges ahead in Paris.

French Open 2025: Changing partners, clay remains the real test for Yuki Bhambri

Yuki Bhambri of India (Photo by) NEW DELHI: As the clay court season reaches its big stage with Roland Garros , it once again reinforces the point in Indian tennis that the focus is on doubles and not singles. Leading the charge on that front is Yuki Bhambri , who was once the flag bearer in the singles department. The year, though, didn't begin as Bhambri might have hoped. At the Australian Open, partnering Albano Olivetti, the duo bowed out in the first round. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! What has followed is a string of partner changes, not by design but by necessity, as Olivetti's injury and the volatile nature of the rankings forced Bhambri to adapt. His journey resumed with Croatian veteran Ivan Dodig at the ATP 250 in Montpellier. Since then, the Indian ace has had to recalibrate often. 2025 has so far witnessed Bhambri partnering with seven different players in 13 tournaments. Despite the instability, the results speak volumes. Bhambri (and Alexei Popyrin) clinched the ATP 500 title in Dubai, made it to the quarters at Indian Wells and Miami, and became India's No. 1 in doubles, overtaking Rohan Bopanna , who had held that position since October 2019. Speaking to before the Madrid Open, Bhambri acknowledged the highs and lows, "I think it's part and parcel of our tennis, of rankings going up and down. I think tennis rewards you for consistency, and I've had good success over the last few months or so, which has just shown in the rankings." Yuki Bhambri of India and Alexei Popyrin of Australia celebrate with their trophies (Photo by) But now comes another test, the clay. On the red dirt, Bhambri hasn't had the best results in the run-up to the French Open. Four of his last five clay appearances ended in first-round exits, with Robert Galloway being his regular companion in the latest tournaments. The 32-year-old, however, remains undeterred. "When you move on to clay, it's a lot slower. So you have to have a lot more patience. You have to be prepared to hit a lot of balls. You have to be prepared to slide on the court, find your footing, you know, be prepared for the bad bounces at times. So you're playing a very slow and patient game," he added. The only exception to Bhambri's clay troubles came in Bordeaux, partnering Galloway again. The pair fought in the ATP Challenger final but fell just short, losing 6-7(1), 6-7(2) to the fourth-seeded pairing of Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler. His dethroning of Bopanna ended a 286-week reign, coupled with a steady upward trend in his doubles rankings since the COVID-19 pandemic, signalling a changing of guard. The old warhorse Boppana has again occupied the India No.1 spot in latest ATP doubles rankings. Still, Bhambri, who spends his days back in India mentoring kids at Roundglass Tennis Academy alongside his childhood coach Aditya Sachdeva, is far from satisfied. "I think the ultimate goal is to try and do better from here, to try and compete for more trophies. The French (Open) coming up, Wimbledon coming up soon in July, those would be the two key goals where I would really like to hopefully put my best foot forward and succeed," ht noted. There's respect too, for the man he succeeds: "Rohan has been an incredible ambassador for Indian tennis. Even now, he competes at the highest level. There's a lot to learn from him." With Roland Garros just around the corner, the elements of something remarkable are there, but the big question remains: Can Bhambri, amid all the changes and challenges, find the right formula on clay?
