India experienced a day of mixed emotions at Wimbledon on Saturday, with Yuki Bhambri providing a boost by reaching the third round of the men's doubles, while compatriots N. Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli exited after hard-fought second-round defeats. Yuki Bhambri, partnering with American Robert Galloway, delivered a gritty performance to secure a straight-sets victory over the pairing of Portugal's Nuno Borges and American Marcos Giron. The Indo-American duo prevailed 6–3, 7–6 in a tightly contested match to book their place in the third round. Bhambri and Galloway showed composure and resilience, especially in the second set tiebreak, holding their nerve to close out the match and continue their impressive run at the All England Club. Balaji-Reyes-Varela Fall to Fourth Seeds Meanwhile, Sriram Balaji and his Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varela faced a formidable test in the form of fourth seeds Marcel Granollers of Spain and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos. Despite a spirited performance, the unseeded pair were beaten 4–6, 4–6 in a match lasting one hour and 20 minutes. Balaji and Reyes-Varela put up a strong fight, pushing their more experienced opponents in several close games, but ultimately couldn't convert opportunities into a breakthrough. Bollipalli-Barrientos Push British Duo to the Limit Later in the day, Rithvik Bollipalli and Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos took on the sixth-seeded all-British pair of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski. The match proved to be a nail-biter, particularly in the second set, but the Indian-Colombian pair fell short, losing 4–6, 6–7 (9) in one hour and 47 minutes. Yuki Bhambri through to second round but Rohan Bopanna knocked out in 2025 Wimbledon men's doubles

Yuki Bhambri went through to the second round with his American partner Robert Galloway but it was not to be for India veteran Rohan Bopanna at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday. Bhambri and Galloway, who are seeded 16th, beat Romain Arneodo of Monaco and Manuel Guinard of France 7-6(8), 6-4 in a first-round match that lasted one hour and 49 minutes. Meanwhile, Bopanna and his Belgian partner Sander Gille lost to German third seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 3-6, 4-6 in straight sets to bow out in the opening round. Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli and his Colombian partner Nicolás Barrientos came from behind and then survived a long tie-break in the deciding set to beat Belgian David Goffin and Frenchman Alexandre Muller 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11). Arneodo and Guinard went toe-to-toe with Bhambri and Galloway for much of the first set, eventually forcing it to go into a tie-break. That remained the case in the tie-break as well but the Indian-American pair persevered and prevailed. However, they managed to get a break in the seventh game of the second set and then closed it out. Bhambri and Galloway will next take on the winner of the match between the Dutch combination of Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer and American Marcos Giron and Nuno Borges of Portugal in the next round. Bopanna, who had won the 2024 French Open men's doubles title and the 2017, struggled along with his partner Gille to keep up with Krawietz and Puetz. Bollipalli and Barrientos saved as many as four match points to prevail over Muller and Goffin. Their second-round match will be against either the sixth-seeded British pair of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski or wildcards Joshua Paris and Charles Broom. Another Indian N Sriram Balaji and his Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varela will also be in action in the men's doubles and will take on Aleksandar Kovacevic and Learner Tien in the opening round.

Alarm bells ring: Uttarakhand's glacier lakes swell, signalling future disasters

DEHRADUN: The Himalayan region of Uttarakhand is witnessing an alarming proliferation of glacial lakes, a trend that experts warn could signal major future disasters in this ecologically fragile zone. A recent study by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) has brought this worrying development to the fore. The study reveals a significant increase in the number of glaciers across the state, currently recorded at 1,290, up from 1,266 a decade ago. Concurrently, the area covered by glacial lakes has expanded by a substantial 8.1 per cent. This growth underscores the severe impacts of climate change on the delicate Himalayan ecosystem. Dr Rakesh Bhambri, a glaciologist at WIHG, elaborated on the findings, stating, 'Our research indicates that new lakes are forming on glaciers in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, and existing lakes are growing in size. There has been a notable increase in their numbers since our 2015 study.' Attributing this surge primarily to climate change and global warming, he further explained, 'The occurrence of rain instead of snow at altitudes of four to five thousand metres is a significant contributing factor, leading to glacier melt and the formation of these lakes.' While acknowledging the overall increase, Dr Bhambri clarified that not all lakes are expanding. The destructive potential of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) is not new to the region. The devastating Kedarnath tragedy of 2013 was triggered by the bursting of the Chorabari glacial lake, and the 2021 Raini-Tapovan floods were also a result of a similar event. Sikkim experienced a comparable disaster in 2013. In light of these past catastrophes, the Indian government has identified 13 such high-risk glacial lakes in Uttarakhand that could pose a significant threat in the future. Prominent among these are Vasundhara Lake in Chamoli, Kedartal in Uttarkashi, Nagkund in Bageshwar, six lakes in Pithoragarh, and one in Tehri.
