Abrogation of Article 370 was a correction of historic blunder, says Governor Ravi
Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi on Friday said the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was a correction of a historic blunder. Speaking at the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Syama Prasad Mookerjee (founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh) at Raj Bhavan, Mr. Ravi said the country, under British colonial rule, suffered severe economic, military and educational exploitation. Mr. Ravi spoke in detail on how Syama Prasad Mookerjee had opposed granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir after Independence. 'He was also instrumental in ensuring that at least a part of Bengal remained with India during Partition,' he said. The Governor pointed to key events like the 1905 Bengal partition and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre as sparks that stirred nationwide resistance. He noted that leaders such as Tamil nationalist V.O. Chidambaram Pillai played an active role in these movements. The Governor also said that Mookerjee became a martyr fighting for Kashmir and his dream was fulfilled in 2019. He also added that reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is the next step, which he said, will happen. Earlier, he paid floral tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee's decorated portrait. H.V. Hande, former Tamil Nadu health minister, and P. Kanagasabapathi, secretary and trustee of the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, were among the participants.

Rajasthan minister seeks removal of books that glorify Gandhis; Congress slams ‘ideological attack'
A fresh political controversy has erupted in Rajasthan after School Education Minister Madan Dilawar announced plans to remove two books from the Class 12 syllabus, accusing them of disproportionately glorifying Congress leaders — particularly from the Gandhi-Nehru family — while ignoring other national icons. The books in question, Azadi Ke Baad Swarnim Bharat Parts 1 and 2, have been part of the curriculum since the tenure of the previous Congress government. According to Dilawar, they portray Congress leaders in a positive light despite their role in imposing the Emergency, suspending the Constitution, and undermining democracy. 'These books glorify those responsible for the Emergency. They ignore the contributions of great leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dr BR Ambedkar, and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh,' Dilawar told reporters. 'Why are there no references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 11 years of leadership, or former chief ministers like Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Vasundhara Raje?' Dilawar further stated that since these books do not carry examination weightage, retaining them in the syllabus only adds to the students' burden. He justified the late-stage withdrawal by saying, 'Just because money has been spent printing these books doesn't mean we should serve poison to our children. We are ready to bear the loss to protect students from misinformation. 'The Rajasthan State Textbook Board has already printed 4.90 lakh copies of the books for the 2025 academic session, with 80% reportedly distributed across 19,700 schools. This late removal has sparked criticism over financial wastage and curriculum instability. Reacting sharply, Congress leader Govind Singh Dotasra accused the BJP government of pushing a divisive ideological agenda. 'This is an ideological attack and reflects the narrow-mindedness of the RSS,' he said. 'These books were approved by the previous BJP-led government, including the education department. What changed now?' Dotasra questioned the rationale behind the removal, calling it an attempt to erase the legacy of former Congress prime ministers. 'Is the BJP trying to erase the contributions of Jawaharlal Nehru, who laid the foundation of modern institutions like IITs, IIMs, ISRO, and AIIMS? Are they ignoring Indira Gandhi's leadership during the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Pokhran nuclear test, and the nationalization of banks?' He also defended the legacies of Rajiv Gandhi—who introduced computerisation and strengthened Panchayati Raj—and Manmohan Singh, credited with pioneering India's economic liberalisation. 'By removing these references, is the BJP trying to hide history from our students? This isn't just a change in curriculum—it's an attempt to control the direction of young minds,' Dotasra added. As the debate intensifies, the controversy highlights the ongoing tug-of-war between educational content and political ideology in shaping India's historical narrative. –With PTI Inputs

Delhi BJP to stage play on life of Syama Prasad Mookerjee today
New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party Delhi unit President Virendra Sachdeva announced his party's plans to spread the ideals of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh -- a forerunner of the BJP -- through a theatrical performance on Tuesday. Sachdeva told media persons that the play based on the life of Dr Mookerjee will be performed at Kamani Auditorium, as part of the continuing celebrations of Mookerjee's birth anniversary. He said the play will be performed in the presence of the BJP National president JP Nadda. Sachdeva said that the performance, to be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, will showcase various aspects of Dr Mookerjee's life — his nature in childhood, his journey from college days to becoming a young Vice-Chancellor, his entry into politics, his resignation from Nehru's cabinet for the sake of national unity, and his journey to Jammu and Kashmir and meeting with Sheikh Abdullah. 'All these themes have been depicted in the play. The performers are from the National School of Drama,' he said. He said that Dr Mookerjee's sole objective was to move forward with the idea of 'Nation First', and today, the seed he planted has grown into a banyan tree in the form of the Bharatiya Janata Party — the world's largest political party. Delhi BJP Media Head Praveen Shankar Kapoor said that the BJP was in politics not just for politics but for principles, and this theatrical performance on the life of Dr Mookerjee served as a medium to present those very principles. Delhi BJP Morcha in-charge Sumit Bhasin and spokesperson Nitin Tyagi were also present at the conference. On Dr Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary on Sunday, Nadda digitally inaugurated six district offices of Delhi and Haryana. Stating that Dr Mookerjee's birth anniversary carried both moral responsibility and emotional significance for the BJP, Nadda said that he was a man of multifaceted talent. He became a professor at Kolkata University at the age of 33 and entered the legislative Assembly by the age of 36. Nadda emphasised that Dr Mookerjee never clung to positions of power but remained unwavering in his commitment to ideology, even sacrificing his life for it. He never compromised on his beliefs, and India will always remain indebted to him, especially for his role in ensuring that West Bengal remained a part of the country. Nadda recalled that the seeds of Indian politics' divisive appeasement were sown soon after Independence, and Dr Mookerjee resigned from the Nehru cabinet in protest, laying the foundation of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which evolved into today's Bharatiya Janata Party.
