Have never banned books, never will, says J&K CM Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday (August 8, 2025) distanced himself from the recent ban on 25 books by the Lieutenant-Governor's administration. 'Get your facts right before you call me a coward, you ignoramus. The ban has been imposed by the L-G using the only department he officially controls – the Home Department. I've never banned books and I never would,' Mr. Abdullah said in a post on X. The J&K Home department, which comes under the Lieutenant-Governor, invoked Section 98 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 on Wednesday to categorise 25 books as 'forfeited for propagating false narrative and secessionism'. There is growing opposition to the L-G administration's move to list books of prominent writers such as Christopher Snedden, A.G. Noorani, Sumantra Bose, Ayesha Jalal, Sugata Bose; Arundhati Roy, Stephen P. Cohen, Anuradha Bhasin, Seema Qazi, etc. as 'forfeited' in J&K.

Books banned, now bookstores are raided in Kashmir as police crack down on ‘false narrative, secessionism'

A day after the Jammu and Kashmir administration announced a ban on 25 books, police on Thursday launched a massive drive across the Kashmir Valley to seize them from bookstores. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha's administration had on Wednesday banned the publication of 25 books on Kashmir, saying they propagate 'false narrative and secessionism in Jammu and Kashmir'. On Thursday, police teams scanned through bookstores from north to south Kashmir looking for the books that were banned by the Home Department. Police said several volumes were seized. Wednesday's notification said that the Home Department had identified 25 books that 'need to be declared as 'forfeited' in terms of Section 98 of Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023'. The books include political commentaries and historical accounts. While one of them was published in Pakistan, most were published in India. Among them were 'The Kashmir Dispute 914-2012' by noted constitutional expert A G Noorani, 'Kashmir at Crossroads' and 'Contested Lands' by Sumantra Bose, 'In Search of Future — The Kashmir Story' by David Devdas, Arundhati Roy's 'Azadi', and 'A Dismantled State — The Untold Story of Kashmir After Article 370' by journalist Anuradha Bhasin. The decision to ban the books has attracted severe criticism from political leaders in the Valley. Former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said banning books would not erase history. 'Democracy thrives on the free exchange of ideas. Banning books cannot erase history; it only fuels division,' Mufti said in a post on X. 'In Kashmir, suppressing democratic voices and fundamental freedoms deepens alienation and mistrust. Censorship doesn't silence ideas, it amplifies their resonance,' she said. Hurriyat chairman and the Kashmir's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said the decision 'exposes the insecurities and limited understanding' of the authorities. 'Banning books by scholars and reputed historians will not erase historical facts and the repertoire of lived memories of the people of Kashmir,' the Mirwaiz said, adding, 'It only exposes the insecurities and limited understanding of those behind such authoritarian actions, and the contradiction in proudly hosting the ongoing Book Festival to showcase its literary commitment.' The J-K Police had raided bookshops in the Valley earlier also, and seized books related to Jamat-e-Islami. Bashaarat Masood is a Special Correspondent with The Indian Express. J-K govt bans 25 books for propagating ‘false narrative and secessionism'

It said available evidence based on investigations and credible intelligence 'unflinchingly indicate' that a significant driver behind youth participation in violence and terrorism has been the 'systematic dissemination of false narratives and secessionist literature by its persistent internal circulation, often disguised as historical or political commentary'. 'It has come to the notice of the Government, that certain literature propagates false narrative and secessionism in the Jammu and Kashmir,' an order issued by the Home Department said. Srinagar, Aug 6 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday declared the publication of 25 books, including those written by famous authors like Moulana Moudadi, Arundhati Roy, A G Noorani, Victoria Schofield and David Devadas, as forfeited for 'promoting false narratives and glorifying terrorism'. It plays a critical role in 'misguiding the youth, glorifying terrorism and inciting violence' against India, the order said. It said this literature would deeply impact the psyche of youth by 'promoting culture of grievance, victim hood and terrorist heroism'. 'Some of the means by which this literature has contributed to the radicalization of youth in J&K include distortion of historical facts, glorification of terrorists, vilification of security forces, religious radicalization, promotion of alienation, pathway to violence and terrorism etc,' it added. In this context, 25 books have been identified that propagate 'false narrative and secessionism' in J&K and need to be declared as 'forfeited' in terms of Section 98 of Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, the order said. The identified 25 books have been found to 'excite secessionism and endangering sovereignty and integrity of India', thereby, attracting the provisions of sections 152, 196 and 197 of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, it said. 'Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 98 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, the government of Jammu and Kashmir hereby declares publication of 25 books and their copies or other documents to be forfeited to the Government,' the order said.
