24 former classmates from Pune among 149 Maha tourists stranded in Uttarakhand

Pune: A group of 24 friends from the 1990 Std X batch of a school from Manchar's Awasari Khurd village, about 60km from Pune, remained unreachable after the cloudburst and heavy rainfall at Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand on Tuesday. The state disaster management department said at least 149 tourists from Maharashtra were stranded in Uttarakhand. Awasari Khurd resident Ashok Bhor and 23 of his Std X friends from 1990 batch reunited for the 'Char Dham Yatra' after 35 years. The group members, many now living in cities like Mumbai, began their trip on Aug 1 with a train journey from Mumbai and were set to return on Aug 12 via a flight from Delhi. Bhor's son Aditya said the family last spoke to him around 7pm on Monday, when the group was about 10km from Gangotri and stuck due to fallen trees and minor landslides. "Since then, we have not been able to get in touch with him or any other member of the group. Their cellphones are not reachable," he told TOI. Around 61 tourists from Mumbai are safe and currently at Hanuman Ashram. However, nearly 75 of the 149 tourists still have their phones switched off, out of network, or not reachable." Malhari Abhang, a batchmate who didn't join the trip as he visited Kedarnath last month, said, "I last spoke to them in a video call on Monday afternoon, and some posted updates on social media about heading to Gangotri. But after that, we've been unable to reach them." Abhang said the group had planned to stop in Uttarkashi on Aug 5 and then head to Gauri Kund the next day. "They booked a bus from Haridwar for local travel and were trying to contact the local operator, but so far, no connection has been established," he said. Family members of the tourists were growing increasingly worried as videos of the cloudburst circulated on social media, with no updates on the group's status. "Despite claims that all Maharashtra tourists are safe, we haven't personally spoken to anyone since the incident, and everyone's anxious," said Mahendra Jangam, whose sister Samruddhi, a Mumbai resident, is part of the group. On Wednesday morning, Baramati MP Supriya Sule shared details of the tourist group on her 'X' account, appealing to state govt and Uttarakhand chief minister to trace them and ensure their safe return. An official from Pune district disaster management office said the details of the group from Awasari Khurd village have already been sent to the state disaster management department. "We have been informed that almost all tourists from the state, who are currently in Uttarakhand, are safe. But the administration is yet to establish contact with each one of them," the official said. A senior official from the Nanded disaster management department confirmed that the 11 tourists from the district were safe and expected to return by Thursday. "Eleven people from Mau Dongaon in Biloli taluka of Nanded district left on Aug 1 for the Kedarnath-Badrinath Yatra. They are currently in Uttarkashi, about 150km from the cloudburst site. They are all safe," the official said. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, in a statement on Wednesday, said, "State govt is in constant touch with the Uttarakhand administration, and efforts are underway to move stranded tourists to safety and ensure their safe return to Maharashtra." He urged family members not to panic, while assuring them that govt was taking necessary measures for the safe return of their loved ones.

SMEs in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad seek govt intervention to cushion blow of Trump's tariffs on India

Small-scale industries in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have urged the Central and Maharashtra governments to take immediate steps to mitigate the negative effects of the 25 per cent tariffs on imports from India proposed by United States President Donald Trump. Industrialist Arun Firodia has called for a drastic reduction in electricity charges as well as interest rates to ensure the sustainability of engineering exports. Firodia, who is the chairman of Kinetic Group, said drastic steps like a reduction in electricity rates have to be taken to keep up the competitiveness of Indian engineering goods in the US and world market. 'Our industries should get electricity at Rs 2 per unit,' he said. At present, industrial units purchase electricity at Rs 8.32 per unit in the state, which is one of the highest in the country. 'The government must take steps to increase the purchase power of the consumer by reducing domestic taxation,' he said. Last week, Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports from August 7, alongside an additional but unspecified 'penalty' for India's defence and energy imports from Russia. Small- and medium-scale industries in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad are mostly vendors and sub-vendors of the automotive industry in the district. In Pimpri-Chinchwad alone, more than 5,000 small and medium-scale industries employ over 3-4 lakh people in various engineering operations. SMEs are also involved in exports directly or indirectly. Precious stones, engineering goods, pharmaceutical, textiles are some of the major exports from the country to the USA. Abhay Bhor, president of the Federation of Small Scale Industries Association in Pimpri-Chinchwad, urged both the state and Central government to take urgent steps to mitigate the effects of the tariff. 'Engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, electronics and industrial packaging units are based on the US export markets for their survival. The tariff, Bhor said, will result in loss of jobs as well as closure of the industries. 'Most industries are going through a rough patch with this tariff; it can really be a body blow to the industries,' he said. Bhor requested Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to immediately interfere to ensure this crisis is resolved. 'The sector requires handholding and the chief minister must take urgent steps to help the sector,' he said.

Monsoon triggering joint pain? Orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon explains what you are doing wrong

Joint pain is defined as discomfort, aches and soreness in any of the joints in the body. Since it is a common complaint, it usually does not require a hospital visit, although it is best to follow some home remedies to tackle it effectively. Beat the monsoon blues: Top 5 doctor-recommended tips to ease joint pain during rainy season.(Image by Pixabay) However, during monsoons, joint pains can increase and sometimes even interfere with the daily chores of a person. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Pramod Bhor, director - orthopedics and joint replacement surgery at Hiranandani Hospital Vashi – A Fortis Network Hospital, explained, 'This is because there is a direct correlation between monsoons and colder climates with joint pain. Due to changes in the humidity levels, atmospheric pressure and the sudden shift in the temperature and precipitation, blood pressure in the blood vessels is impacted.' He added, 'As a result of the increased blood pressure, the body must work harder to pump blood, which can result in more joint pain. In addition, monsoons and colder climates can also lead to dehydration in the body, decreasing fluid concentration and worsening joint pain. Besides joint pain, monsoon can worsen arthritis-related symptoms, especially in people above 60.' Joint pain and stiffness is rather common during monsoon(Freepik) What are the possible causes of joint pain? Understanding the root cause of joint pain is critical as it can help treat the condition effectively. According to Dr Bhor, some common causes of joint pain that can worsen in the monsoon season include: One of the most common causes of joint pain is Arthritis. In India, it is projected that there are at least seven million patients who suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), which is one of the most common forms of Arthritis. Moreover, Osteoarthritis, the second most common rheumatologic problem in the country, has a prevalence of 22 – 39 per cent in the country. Since Osteoarthritis and RA are degenerative joint diseases, they can cause inflammation, pain, and stiffness. RA and Osteoarthritis cannot be cured, so their symptoms must be tackled through medication and other forms of treatments. However, little is possible to prevent the disease once it has advanced. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can cause your body to attack itself. Besides damaging the organs and tissues, lupus can also cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints. As lupus is a chronic condition and takes a considerable time to diagnose (as it mimics other conditions, ruling out other diseases is time-consuming), some ways to combat this condition include medicines and healthier life choices. Other conditions that can cause stiffness and pain in the affected joints include Bursitis (a condition in which the tiny, fluid-filled sacs in the body, called Bursae that cushion the bones, tendons and muscles near the joint become inflamed), Gout (which is a type of Arthritis that can appear suddenly) and in rare cases Bone Cancer. What are the symptoms of joint pain? Dr Bhor answered, 'In many cases, joint pain, especially during monsoon, will not require medical attention, but there is always an exception to this rule. A person should consult a medical expert when they do not know the reason behind the joint pain and are experiencing other symptoms.' He advised to consult a doctor immediately in the following scenarios: The place around the joint is swollen, red, tender, or warm The discomfort has persisted for more than three days A fever with no other signs of the flu accompanies the ache The pain is a result of a severe injury or accident The joint seems deformed The swelling in the joint occurs suddenly or if it looks immobile The agony in the joint is extreme. Say 'goodbye' to monsoon joint pain: 5 essential tips for pain-free days (Photo by Uzma Mirza) How to treat joint pain in monsoon? Since joint pain in the monsoon is seasonal, Dr Pramod Bhor suggested that making lifestyle changes and combing home remedies with medications can help combat this issue in the long term. Some of them include the following: Aerobic exercises that are easy on joints, like walking, bicycling, swimming and water aerobics, are highly recommended. It is essential to stay physically active throughout the year to ensure that symptoms related to joint pain do not flare up during this time. Doing at least 150 minutes of strenuous aerobic weekly is highly recommended. Further, exercise for ten minutes at a time if that helps to reduce the pain and always consult a doctor before doing anything strenuous. A good diet rich in essential nutrients can go a long way in helping fight inflammation and improve symptoms related to joint pain. For starters, a diet focusing on whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts and beans, and at the same time having minimal amounts of processed foods and saturated fat is ideal for overall health while at the same time helping manage disease activity as well. Some examples of food to add to such a diet include oily fish (Sardines, Mackerel, Salmon and fresh Tuna), dairy (milk, yoghurt and cheese), dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collard greens), broccoli, green tea, garlic and nuts. Keep yourself warm with warm showers or baths, which can help ease joint pain. If required, dress in layers and increase the heat inside your house to prevent moisture retention, which can increase your symptoms. Consult a doctor for pain medications that can help reduce the severity of joint pain. Get sufficient sleep of at least eight hours. Get enough sleep for at least eight hours. Not getting quality good sleep can lower the threshold for pain, leading to increased joint pain and pain that was felt only in a particular part of the body becoming more widespread. Why Sanjay Jagtap's induction will unsettle BJP allies NCP and Shiv Sena in Pune politics

Pune district Congress chief Sanjay Jagtap's decision to join the BJP is not merely a blow to the Opposition party. It could also shake the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, increasing the prospects of the BJP getting a firm grasp in rural Pune–something that had eluded the party in the past. Pune district had for long been a bastion of the Congress, but the party slowly lost its grip to the Sharad Pawar-led NCP after the veteran leader split the Congress. However, the Congress continues to have its presence in district politics. The Congress lost its ground completely in the 2024 elections as it failed to win any Lok Sabha or Assembly seat in the district. Its tally from three legislators in 2019 to zero in 2024 was the party's worst-ever election performance in Pune. 'The loyalist families leaving the Congress is a cause for concern. The party leadership has to give it a thought. There has been a lot of damage to the organisation and efforts have to be taken to change the mindset of those trying to jump for survival in politics by giving up the Congress ideology,' said Anant Gadgil, a Congress spokesperson. Jagtap was the Congress face in Pune for the nine years during which he held the district president post, since 2016. He resigned two days ago to join the BJP. 'The Congress party trusted Jagtap so much that they made him district unit chief for nine consecutive years and now he has quit the party to join the main rival BJP. His jumping over has damaged the party as he was at the helm of affairs for long and is likely to damage the party further by taking along the party cadre that is with him,' said a local Congress leader. The past efforts of the BJP to get control over the politics of Pune district did not yield much success despite the party managing to win a record number of seats in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state. The only option for the BJP has been to strengthen its base by inducting well-established political families in other parties into its fold. In 2019, the BJP managed to induct former minister Harshvardhan Patil into the party but lost him to the NCP(SP) in 2024. However, since the 2024 Assembly elections, the BJP has been successful in its efforts to expand its base in Pune district. A few months ago, the party inducted three-time Congress legislator Sagram Thopte, son of former Congress minister Anantrao Thopte, into the party and added an influential political family of Bhor to its kitty. Now, the BJP has got Sanjay Jagtap, who is from the influential political family of Purandar. 'Our family always believed in the ideology of Congress but in the last few years, things have changed. We have realised that the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis is taking everyone together on the path of progress,' said Jagtap after announcing his BJP entry. The BJP has been desperately trying hard to destroy the Pawars' bastion of Baramati over the last few elections. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP pitted a Dhangar community leader, Mahadeo Jankar of the RSP, against incumbent Supriya Sule but missed the opportunity by a small margin to take over the reins of Baramati. It got the wife of then RSP legislator Kanchan Kul, a distant relative of Pawar, to contest on a BJP ticket against Sule in 2019 but didn't succeed. In 2024, Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar, who was the NCP candidate supported by the BJP, failed to defeat Sule of the NCP(SP). Incidentally, Sule got leads from the Purandar and Bhor Assembly constituencies, where the Jagtap and Thorat families are influential, respectively. The BJP's presence has been very weak in these segments. After the 2024 Assembly elections, the BJP represents Khadakwasla and Daund constituencies, while the NCP represents Baramati, Indapur, and Bhor, and the Shiv Sena represents Purandar. Now, the BJP will get an upper hand in four of the six Assembly segments in the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. The Pawars, especially Ajit Pawar, who has taken over the charge of political control from his uncle Sharad Pawar in the Lok Sabha constituency, will feel threatened. 'We are aware of the changing political situation in the district but are strong enough to retain our hold. Every political party wants to expand their base. So the BJP is doing just that,' said a local NCP leader. While the NCP led by Ajit Pawar holds eight Assembly seats in the district, its alliance partner Shiv Sena has one seat, Purandar, where former minister Vijay Shivtare defeated Sanjay Jagtap. Now, Jagtap has joined the BJP, posing a threat to Shivtare and indirectly to the Sena.

Landslide & road cave-in hold up traffic as Mahabaleshwar gets triple-digit rainfall; Pune Ghat areas on red alert

Kolhapur/PuneNashik: Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide and road cave-in between Mahabaleshwar and Tapola in Satara district on Thursday, with Mahabaleshwar receiving 153mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 10.30am. Pune district's Ghat areas also experienced intense showers, with Tamhini and Lonavla recording 230mm and 187mm of rainfall, respectively. The public works department quickly cleared the debris and restored the traffic to Tapola, popularly known as 'Mini Kashmir of Maharashtra'. Satara district disaster management head Devidas Tamhane said, "Satara district is receiving heavy rainfall over the last few days. On Thursday morning, a landslide occurred near the Chikhali Shade area in the ghat section, due to which a major portion of the road between Mahabaleshwar and Tapola caved in. " In Nashik, Godavari river swelled for the first time this monsoon after heavy rainfall lashed the city, with 113.1mm of rain recorded in 24 hours. The river's water level rose to waist-high at the iconic 'Dutondya Maruti' idol, submerging small temples at Ramkund and Godaghat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall for the Ghat section and a yellow alert for Pune city on Friday, coinciding with the annual Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar palkhis' arrival in the city. The palkhi procession to Pandharpur via Pune is a revered annual tradition in Maharashtra, where devotees gather to pay homage to saints like Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj. Kurvande in Pune's Maval taluka recorded 219mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period, followed by Girivan (160mm), Nimgir (116mm), Bhor (109mm), Malin (69mm) and Talegaon (65.5mm). IMD cited two factors for the increased rainfall. "The two factors are a trough extending from northwest Uttar Pradesh to north Gujarat, influenced by a cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan, and an offshore trough at sea level running along the coast from north Konkan to north Kerala," an official said. "As a result, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places is very likely over Konkan and Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra. Besides, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places in north Konkan," the official said.
