Now, 72-yr-old Cooch Behar resident receives NRC notice from Assam

Jalpaiguri/Kolkata: Days after Dinhata resident Uttam Kumar Brajabashi received an NRC notice from Assam, leading to a strong protest from Trinamool led by CM Mamata Banerjee, another resident from Cooch Behar has received a similar notice. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Septuagenarian Nishikanta Das — a resident of Kushiyar Bari in Ghoksadanga Latapata panchayat of Mathabhanga-II block — received the notice from Assam Foreigners' Tribunal in the third week of April. The notice, written in Assamese, accused Das of illegally entering India from Bangladesh between 1966 and 1971, and sought his reply by May 21. Das appeared before the tribunal and presented his Aadhaar, voter ID and ration card as proof of his Indian citizenship, but these were not accepted. A worried Das then sought help from the district administration. Das said he went to Assam for work in 2001. During that time, Assam Police had detained him once, suspecting him to be a Bangladeshi. However, his employer there clarified that he was not a Bangladeshi. Based on this statement — and after verifying all his documents in Assam — the police had released him. Das returned home after working in Assam for about six months. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, 72-year-old Das said the tribunal officials asked for his father's voter list and identity papers. "I submitted my voter ID, Aadhaar and ration card to the tribunal, but they did not accept them. I was asked to show my father's name on the voter list. My father passed away some 45 years ago and I had no ready documents. Even though I have found that document now, I have decided not to approach the tribunal again," he claimed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Trinamool Cooch Behar district Abhijit De Bhowmik visited Das's house on Saturday and assured him of all help. "BJP is doing all this to create fear among Bengalis," Bhowmik said. Responding to Bhowmik's claims, BJP pointed fingers at TMC. Mathabhanga BJP MLA Sushil Barman said: "Nishikanta went to work in Assam. He will have to show his documents. But there's nothing to worry, we are with him. Trinamool is unnecessarily dragging the matter for doing politics." Barman also visited Das at his home during the day. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claimed that Rajbanshis were being harassed just like Matuas. "Whether you (BJP) are detaining Matuas or sending NRC letters to Rajbanshis, you are harassing Hindus. Are they not Hindus? You are not allowing any community in Bengal to live in peace," Ghosh said. Das, now an egg-seller, has two sons and three daughters, all of whom are married and settled in Alipurduar. His wife died eight years ago. Locals said they have known Das for a long time. "I've known him since childhood. He's a bit older than me. Nishikanta has been here for a long time, only going to another state for work for a few months. Due to his age, he hasn't gone out of here for a long time now," said Sumit Barman, a neighbour.

Kolkata man dies after falling ill on Puri-Hwh Vande Bharat

Bhubaneswar: A 57-year-old passenger from Kolkata died after falling ill onboard the Howrah-Puri Vande Bharat Express on Wednesday after the train left Cuttack railway station. The deceased, Himadri Bhowmik, a native of Dhakuria in south Kolkata, was travelling to Bhubaneswar on coach number C2 along with a 50-year-old co-passenger, Debarati Majumdar. Bhowmik, who owned an academic consultancy firm, and his colleague Majumdar were scheduled to meet a person regarding their business at Bomikhal here. The firm helps in admission of students in different educational institutes. "After the train left Cuttack, my colleague went to use the washroom. After returning, he started feeling uneasy and became unconscious. We tried to get an oxygen cylinder for him but failed to arrange one. Train staff and RPF personnel reached the coach after some time. Some people conducted CPR on Bhowmik," Majumdar said. The train arrived in Bhubaneswar at 1.40 pm. "We booked a private ambulance to take my colleague to the hospital. It came on the platform no. 6 side. Unfortunately, doctors declared him brought dead at the private hospital. He used to take medicines to control his blood pressure," she added. After he was declared dead at 2.55 pm, the body was taken to the hospital's mortuary. "The hospital has already informed the police about the death. The body will be sent for post-mortem to Capital Hospital in the presence of family members," a source said. Family members were on the way to Bhubaneswar. East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said prompt action was taken for providing medical assistance to the passenger. "The patient, along with the co-passenger, was sent to a hospital promptly. RPF staff at Bhubaneswar escorted them to the hospital," a source said.

The accident happened near the Majherhat shrine in the Rekjuani area in New Town around 10 pm when there were very few vehicles plying on the road. Victim Pooja Saha (18) was a resident of Salua on Rajarhat Main Road, located near the place of accident. CCTV footage showed Saha riding the scooter with unstable hands as her friend, Subhankar Bhowmik, a resident of Narayanpur, was seen guiding her from the pillion seat. Bhowmik was seen wearing a helmet. "It looked like the girl suddenly turned the accelerator in full throttle as she lost control of the two-wheeler, and it began moving at a high speed before it hit the speed breaker," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. As the accident happened, Saha was flung off the scooter, and her head rammed against the concrete. Bhowmik also fell down, but since he had the helmet strapped on, he escaped with minor injuries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Locals rushed Saha to Rekjuani Rural Health Center with injuries on her head, neck, chest, and abdomen. Doctors declared her dead on arrival at the hospital. Bhowmik was treated for minor injuries. Family members said Saha recently passed higher secondary examination with good scores and was awaiting college admission. "She purchased a new bag and clothes in anticipation, which now remain untouched in her closet. She wanted to pursue graduation in English. She had so many dreams. We were all so proud of her," said a grieving relative. "This loss is unbearable." Airport PS has launched an unnatural death probe. The damaged scooter has been seized and Saha's body sent for post-mortem. "We have been pleading with riders to always wear helmets. If the woman wore the helmet, she could still live," said the officer. "We also urge citizens, especially young and inexperienced riders, to be cautious while operating two-wheelers and avoid late-night rides without supervision or proper training. "
