18-year-old New Town girl dies while learning scooter

Kolkata: A class XII examinee taking scooter lessons from her friend on a New Town road without wearing a helmet died after she failed to negotiate a speed-breaker and fell on the ground, suffering severe head injuries on Sunday night.
The accident happened near the Majherhat shrine in the Rekjuani area in New Town around 10 pm when there were very few vehicles plying on the road. Victim Pooja Saha (18) was a resident of Salua on Rajarhat Main Road, located near the place of accident.
CCTV footage showed Saha riding the scooter with unstable hands as her friend, Subhankar Bhowmik, a resident of Narayanpur, was seen guiding her from the pillion seat. Bhowmik was seen wearing a helmet.
"It looked like the girl suddenly turned the accelerator in full throttle as she lost control of the two-wheeler, and it began moving at a high speed before it hit the speed breaker," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police.
As the accident happened, Saha was flung off the scooter, and her head rammed against the concrete. Bhowmik also fell down, but since he had the helmet strapped on, he escaped with minor injuries.

Locals rushed Saha to Rekjuani Rural Health Center with injuries on her head, neck, chest, and abdomen. Doctors declared her dead on arrival at the hospital. Bhowmik was treated for minor injuries.
Family members said Saha recently passed higher secondary examination with good scores and was awaiting college admission. "She purchased a new bag and clothes in anticipation, which now remain untouched in her closet.
She wanted to pursue graduation in English. She had so many dreams. We were all so proud of her," said a grieving relative. "This loss is unbearable."
Airport PS has launched an unnatural death probe. The damaged scooter has been seized and Saha's body sent for post-mortem. "We have been pleading with riders to always wear helmets. If the woman wore the helmet, she could still live," said the officer. "We also urge citizens, especially young and inexperienced riders, to be cautious while operating two-wheelers and avoid late-night rides without supervision or proper training.

The cash was recovered following a month-long surveillance operation carried out by TGANB, with assistance from the Goa Police. The operation led to the arrest of Uttam Singh, a hawala operator who runs a mobile shop in Mapusa, Goa. TGANB officials allege that Singh laundered Rs 2.10 crore of drug proceeds in just one week. The money was allegedly received from individuals, including foreign nationals, and routed to Mumbai before being transferred to Nigeria. 'Hard cash earned through drug sales was being handed over to Uttam Singh at his mobile shop. He would then send the money to Mumbai, and from there, it was transferred to Nigeria,' said TGANB Director Sandeep Shandilya. Officials say the Rs 50 lakh seized from the apartment was a two-day collection and was minutes away from being moved abroad. Thane: The Konkan divisional agriculture department has urged residents from Thane, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai to verify the credentials of pest control agencies before hiring them. They warned that unlicensed operators offering services at cheap rates could pose serious health risks and potentially cause irreparable damage to properties. The issue of illegal operators working in the region was raised during a workshop of chemical and pesticide dealers from Thane and Mumbai, held in Thane recently. Following this, an appeal has been issued by the divisional agriculture department to residents to stay alert and report illegal services to the administration. "The demand for pest control is usually more ahead of the monsoon. Presently, there are just 414 licensed agencies in Mumbai, 257 in Thane, and 135 in Raigad, which is much less compared to the demand in the region, leaving scope for many unlicensed operatives to function," said Balaji Tate, divisional superintendent of agriculture, Thane. "Licensed firms and operators hold a degree in chemistry or agriculture, complete a 15-day certified course from institutes in Hyderabad or Mysore, and start operating after paying an annual licence fee of Rs 7,500, which is renewable. These operators also possess chemical purchase certificates," explained officials. Offenders will face action under the Pesticides Act of 1968 and 1971, Tate said.
