ED deputy director held by CBI for seeking Rs 5cr bribe
Representative image (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: CBI has arrested a deputy director of ED in Odisha, Chintan Raghuvanshi, in connection with an alleged bribery case. The agency had conducted a 'trap operation' on Thursday after receiving a complaint that the officer had demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore from a Bhubaneswar-based mining businessman, who also owned a hospital, in lieu of not attaching his hospital or arresting him in a case. Raghuvanshi, a 2013-batch IRS officer, was apprehended by CBI while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh as the first instalment of the bribe. In his complaint, which is part of CBI's FIR, the businessman said he had received a summons from ED's Bhubaneswar office in 2024 and had attended the proceedings where he was informed about a case having been registered against him in 2020. "On Jan 8, 2025, searches were conducted at my office, residence and at places belonging to my acquaintances. I again received a summon from ED in March 2025. When I went to the ED office, Chintan Raghuvanshi called me to his chamber and asked me to contact a private individual named Bhaghti in order to get relief from ED in my case. I met Bhaghti in Bhubaneshwar and he was also in touch with me on Facetime," the complaint said. The complainant claimed he was pressured to pay a bribe to Raghuvanshi to settle his case. "Bhaghti told me that Raghuvanshi had demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore for not attaching my hospital and not arresting me and to settle my case," the businessman said, adding when he told Bhagthi he could not pay Rs 5 crore, Raghuvanshi allegedly reduced the amount to Rs 2 crore and sought Rs 50 lakh as the first instalment. The businessman subsequently approached CBI which laid a trap and nabbed the officer.

Vehicle falls into river in Sikkim, Odisha BJP leader among 9 missing
A Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Odisha was among nine people reported missing in Sikkim after a tourist vehicle they were travelling in went off the road and fell into the Teesta River late Thursday (May 29, 2025) evening. The vehicle fell about 1,000 ft., at a place between Chungthang and Munshithang along the Chungthang-Lachen road in northern Sikkim's Mangan district. Two groups of tourists from Odisha and West Bengal reportedly hired the vehicle, which had 11 occupants, including the driver and Itishree Jena, the Odisha State secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha. 'Out of the 11 occupants, two have been rescued and referred to STNM Hospital in Gangtok, after preliminary treatment at the Chungthang Field Hospital. Search is still on for the remaining nine persons,' an official statement said. 'Swimmers have been deployed to check for the vehicle wreck in the river. An extensive search operation is underway,' another statement read. Mangan's Superintendent of Police, Sonam Detchu Bhutia, said locals were helping rescue workers to find the missing passengers and recover the vehicle. 'We spotted a body in the middle of the river near a rock, but we have not been able to reach the spot because the river is swollen and its current is very strong. The terrain is too steep for recovery vehicles to reach,' he told The Hindu. While he confirmed that Ms. Jena's name was on the list of passengers, he said, 'We cannot confirm her identity unless she is rescued or the body is recovered.' Her brother, Sisir Nayak, confirmed that she was one of four individuals from Odisha still missing in northern Sikkim's Mangan. He also said her son and nephew were currently on ventilators. 'In response to the accident, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi dispatched a special team to Sikkim. This team's mission is to oversee and aid rescue operations, ensure the injured receive appropriate medical attention, and facilitate their safe return,' a Bhubaneswar-based BJP leader said.

ED officer arrested by CBI in Odisha first demanded ₹5 crore for settling case
NEW DELHI: Chintan Raghuvanshi, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) deputy director, arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), initially demanded ₹5 crore from a Bhubaneswar-based businessman for settling a money laundering case registered against him, but later settled for a ₹2 crore bribe, according to the CBI's first information report (FIR) in the case. An ED official said the federal agency would also initiate disciplinary action against Raghuvanshi and could investigate him for money laundering if the CBI probe reveals that he has received bribes in the past and generated proceeds of crime. Raghuvanshi was arrested by a CBI team late on Thursday following a complaint by businessman Ratikanta Rout who has a stone mining and stone crusher business in Dhenkanal. According to the FIR reviewed by HT, Ratikanta Rout submitted a written complaint about the bribery allegations to CBI on May 28. Rout's complaint, which is part of the FIR, said he received a summons from ED's Bhubaneswar office in 2024 and learnt that a money laundering case had been registered against him by ED. Searches were also conducted at his premises on January 8, 2025. Rout said in the complaint that he was again summoned to the ED office in March this year. During this visit, Raghuvanshi called Rout to his chamber and asked him to contact a private person, Bhaghti, if he wanted relief in the case. He added that Bhaghti first told him about the ₹5 crore demand after discussions with Raghuvanshi. Rout added that at his request over a FaceTime call, the ED officer agreed to reduce the money to ₹2 crore. Rout said he was told to pay ₹50 lakhs, the first instalment of the ₹2 crore bribe to settle the case, and to not arrest him. Raghuvanshi, a 2013 batch Indian Revenue Service officer (Customs and Indirect Taxes), was arrested in the trap laid by CBI.
