Browns beat writer has flaming critique on QB Dillon Gabriel

Browns beat writer has flaming critique on QB Dillon Gabriel The Cleveland Browns are through one week of OTAs, and there are already takes being thrown around about rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. And for once, the spotlight is actually on the third round pick Gabriel, rather than the fifth rounder, Sanders. It's not necessarily in a positive light, however, as The Athletic's Zac Jackson has raised concerns regarding how the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year has looked thus far. And from his eyes, it has not been overly impressive. Here is what Jackson of The Athletic had to say on the former UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon quarterback who the Browns selected with the 94th overall pick in the draft: "Dillon Gabriel does not look like an NFL quarterback to me. Like zero percent... I just don't think any other team was taking him in the top-100 or even the top-150. If I am wrong and the Cleveland Browns have their quarterback, that would be great. One of these years, I would love to cover a normal franchise and a rookie quarterback that sticks around for more than 6-to-18 months. But if it's Dillon Gabriel, I will be beyond shocked." It's way too early to make any definitive statement about the Browns' quarterback situation heading into what will be a hotly contested battle throughout training camp. We'll see if Gabriel is catching the attention of the coaching staff thus far more than he is the local media.

Cleveland Browns pick QB Dillon Gabriel in Round 3 of NFL draft: Fit, scouting report

BEREA — The Cleveland Browns drafted Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel with the No. 94 pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. Gabriel was the fifth quarterback taken in the draft. Here's what Browns fans need to know about Gabriel in our instant analysis of the pick. Dillon Gabriel scouting report Gabriel has played a lot of football over his career. He originally enrolled in 2019 at UCF, where he played three seasons, the last of which was cut short three games in by a broken clavicle. Gabriel went to Oklahoma in 2022, playing two seasons there before jumping to Oregon for his final season. The left-handed quarterback doesn't have a huge arm, but can put it on the money in the intermediate areas. Gabriel is also reasonably careful with the football, with only 32 career interceptions over 2,111 pass attempts. How Dillon Gabriel fits with Browns The Browns needed a quarterback in this draft, and Gabriel is a quarterback. However, he wasn't one of the quarterbacks everyone assumed they might target. Still, Gabriel joins a quarterback room with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and an injured Deshaun Watson. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has indicated all of the quarterbacks would compete for the starting job, so Gabriel will at least get a chance. Dillon Gabriel stats Gabriel, 24, measured 5-foot-11, 205 pounds at the NFL scouting combine. He's started 63 of the 64 career games, completing 1,376 of 2,111 passes (65.2%) for 18,722 yards with 155 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. Gabriel was a first-team All-American and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in his final season at Oregon, which finished undefeated before losing to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal. He completed 326 of 447 passes (72.9%) for 3,857 yards with 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon on Marvin Harrison Jr.: 'Just wait until this year'

The Arizona Cardinals have big plans for wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., whom they selected with the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. And nobody is more bullish on Harrison's future than his head coach, Jonathan Gannon. "When the staff's in place, the jump from Year 1 to Year 2, I think that's where guys make a huge jump. This guy played unbelievable ball for us, but if you talk to him, he'd be the first to tell you, like, 'I need to get better at these couple things,' and, man, he has went to work on them," Gannon said about Harrison in an interview with Mad Dog Sports Radio on Wednesday. "He has went to work on them. He looks awesome out there right now. I'm really excited to see where his game goes." Appearing in every game in his 2024 rookie season, Harrison totaled 62 receptions for 885 yards (14.3 yards per reception) and a team-high eight touchdowns. He posted 100-plus receiving yards in two games. Harrison was 24th among wide receivers with a 77.7 overall grade and 29th with a 77.2 receiving grade, according to Pro Football Focus. While Harrison certainly held his own in Year 1, his rookie season came against the backdrop of Malik Nabers (No. 6 pick) and Brian Thomas Jr. (No. 23 pick) having spectacular first years with their respective teams: Nabers totaled 109 receptions for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games for the New York Giants, while Thomas totaled 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Across his final two seasons at Ohio State (2022-23), Harrison averaged 72 receptions for 1,237 yards and 14 touchdowns per season. He was a two-time All-American and the 2023 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Gannon thinks that player will show for the Cardinals in 2025. "He [Harrison] came up to me — I normally meet with guys about their developmental plan when we're done with the year — when I had my meeting with him, he came up to me, and he handed me a piece of paper. It wasn't me handing him a piece of paper," Gannon said. "But we knew that. The guy's a ready-made pro. He does all the right things. He was here the whole offseason. He skipped out one week, he went and trained with a bunch of different receivers, but he was here the whole offseason. "I think he added a little bit of muscle mass. He looks a little bit bigger. All his numbers, his metrics are all better than when we got him. I'm not gonna speak truth into the universe, but just wait until this guy plays this year." The Cardinals are coming off an 8-9 season that saw them lose five of their last seven games. Gannon is entering his third season as Arizona's head coach, with the team a combined 12-22 under him. Harrison leads a Cardinals wide receiver room that includes Michael Wilson, Greg Dortch and Zay Jones but one that's also complemented by tight end Trey McBride, who was fourth in the NFL with 111 receptions last season. Arizona has primarily allocated its cap space on defense this offseason, signing linebackers Josh Sweat (four-year, $76.4 million deal) and Akeem Davis-Gaither (two-year, $10 million deal) and defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson (two-year, $29 million deal), among other moves. Browns draft QB Dillon Gabriel: How he fits, pick grade and scouting intel

The Cleveland Browns selected Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel with the No. 94 pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Gabriel played six seasons of college football, spending three years at UCF, two at Oklahoma and his final campaign at Oregon. He's thrown a total of 155 touchdown passes and only 32 interceptions at those three stops, including 30 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 2024. Advertisement He led the American Athletic Conference in 2020 with 3,570 passing yards and 32 touchdown passes. He also led the Big 12 in 2023 with 3,660 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and a 69.3 completion percentage. Gabriel joins a Browns quarterback room that includes veteran Joe Flacco and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett as the only other healthy passers on the roster. 'A one-year starter at Oregon, Gabriel was a productive passer in offensive coordinator Will Stein's balanced spread scheme (51 percent pass to 49 percent run). After three seasons at UCF and two at Oklahoma, he led the Ducks to a 13-1 record and the 2024 Big Ten Championship, winning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting. With six years of college football and 63 starts under his belt, he set the FBS record with 189 total touchdowns (155 passing, 33 rushing, one receiving) and ranks No. 2 all-time in passing yards (18,722). 'A point guard-style quarterback, Gabriel is willing to scan from the pocket and deliver accurate balls with a twitchy release, although he is often too willing to bypass tight windows and settle for the checkdown. He isn't an electric athlete by any means, but he is very poised and confident and plays with exceptional feel for navigating pressure to create second-chance plays. Overall, Gabriel looks small in the pocket and has some limitations as a downfield thrower, but he is a rhythm passer with the football instincts and mature intangibles to overcome his physical shortcomings. A savvy lefty with a quick release, he has similarities to Tua Tagovailoa — and has a fighting chance to earn a backup role in the NFL.' The Browns needed to take a quarterback at some point. But Gabriel was ranked the No. 9 QB in the class by Brugler, and at 5-foot-11, he's probably too small to ever be a real NFL starter. The Browns must think otherwise to be taking him with a top 100 pick, but this one is hard to explain. Gabriel put up big numbers at UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon, and in his final college game in January, eventual national champion Ohio State made him look small and overwhelmed. Browns general manager Andrew Berry said the Browns like Gabriel's accuracy, poise and decision-making, so we'll see what happens. Advertisement The Browns will hold an open competition this spring and summer for the starting quarterback job. Gabriel will start as the No. 3 behind Flacco and Pickett, both of whom are signed only through the 2025 season. The Browns appear to be playing for the future with their acquisition of Jacksonville's 2026 first-round pick, and they could be playing for a quarterback late next season. Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Ohio State quarterback Will Howard or any other offensive player on the board. The Browns have glaring needs at wide receiver and across the offensive line, but they chose a short quarterback. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Gabriel has 'found a way to get it done' by finding throwing lanes and changing arm angles. The Browns like Gabriel's big-game college experience and obviously like his makeup at the end of a long and thorough quarterback search. It's just hard to believe Gabriel will ever be a starter or real option for the team's short- or long-term thinking.

Patriots 2025 NFL Draft Guide: Quarterbacks

EDITOR'S NOTE: MassLive's Mark Daniels released his Ultimate Patriots Draft Guide for 2025 on Thursday, April 17. This story is an excerpt focused on the Quarterback class. On a scale from 1-to-10, the Patriots need for a quarterback in this draft falls at a 1. That's a good thing for a rebuilding franchise. After drafting two quarterbacks last year and having Drake Maye for the foreseeable future, the team also signed veteran Josh Dobbs in free agency. Advertisement Why would they draft a quarterback in 2025? It's easy. After trading Joe Milton III to Dallas this month, the Patriots only have two quarterbacks on the roster. That leaves the door open for the team to add a developmental backup quarterback behind Maye and Dobbs. Here are the Patriots drafted quarterback averages: HT WT Hand 40 Vert Broad 3Cone Shttle 6′2.5 225 9.41 4.87 30.3 9′2 7.22 4.40 Considering this is the most important position in football, it never hurts to take multiple shots in the draft. As we all know, back in 2000, with three veteran quarterbacks on the roster, the Patriots drafted Tom Brady in the sixth round. Here's a look at some backup options: Best athletic fit: Tyler Shough, Louisville HT WT Hand 40 Vert Broad 3Cone Shttle 6′4 219 9.75 4.63 32 9′9 N/A N/A Out of the quarterbacks who tested, Shough hit on five traits – height, hand size, 40 time, vertical and broad jump. He played at Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville in college. Shough suffered a broken leg in 2023. He was one of three winners of the Comeback Player of the Year. Shough threw for 3,195 yards with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. He's a projected second-round pick. Advertisement Later-round option: Seth Henigan, Memphis HT WT Hand 40 Vert Broad 3Cone Shttle 6′3 215 9 4.76 31.5 9′6 7.34 4.44 Henigan also has prototypical athletic traits that the Patriots look for in a quarterback. He hits marks with height, 40 time, vertical, and broad jump. He threw 3,502 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions last season. He set a Memphis school record with 104 career passing touchdowns. He's a projected seventh-round pick and profiles as a backup. Patriots connection: Will Howard, Ohio State HT WT Hand 40 Vert Broad 3Cone Shttle 6′4 236 9 N/A 31.5 9′4 7.13 4.33 The Patriots hired Riley Larkin to be an offensive assistant. Last season, he was an offensive assistant at Ohio State where he worked with quarterbacks. Howard transferred to Ohio State from Kansas State. He threw for 4,010 yards with 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was second in the FBS with a 73.0 completion percentage. He's a projected fourth-round pick. Howard profiles as an above-average backup. From Hawaii, he played at UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon. He was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2024 as well as a Heisman Trophy finalist. He finished with 3,857 yards with 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. He's a projected fourth-round pick. Local connection: Max Brosmer, Minnesota HT WT Hand 40 Vert Broad 3Cone Shttle 6′1 217 9.25 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A Brosmer played in New England at the University of New Hampshire from 2019-2023. He was one of the best FCS quarterbacks for multiple seasons. Last year, he transferred to Minnesota where he set a school record for completions (268). Brosmer threw for 2,828 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. He's a projected Day 3 pick. More Patriots Content
