Browns beat writer has flaming critique on QB Dillon Gabriel
The Cleveland Browns are through one week of OTAs, and there are already takes being thrown around about rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
And for once, the spotlight is actually on the third round pick Gabriel, rather than the fifth rounder, Sanders. It's not necessarily in a positive light, however, as The Athletic's Zac Jackson has raised concerns regarding how the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year has looked thus far. And from his eyes, it has not been overly impressive.
Here is what Jackson of The Athletic had to say on the former UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon quarterback who the Browns selected with the 94th overall pick in the draft:
"Dillon Gabriel does not look like an NFL quarterback to me. Like zero percent... I just don't think any other team was taking him in the top-100 or even the top-150. If I am wrong and the Cleveland Browns have their quarterback, that would be great. One of these years, I would love to cover a normal franchise and a rookie quarterback that sticks around for more than 6-to-18 months. But if it's Dillon Gabriel, I will be beyond shocked."
It's way too early to make any definitive statement about the Browns' quarterback situation heading into what will be a hotly contested battle throughout training camp. We'll see if Gabriel is catching the attention of the coaching staff thus far more than he is the local media.

There may be no bigger 'what if' in New York Giants history than the trade of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Dealt to the Cleveland Browns for a first- and third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, along with safety Jabrill Peppers, Beckham's departure broke the hearts of a fanbase. He was the team's best player and an elite offensive weapon. He was a cultural icon and, seemingly, made for the market he dominated. Advertisement And then he was shipped to Cleveland by (then) general manager Dave Gettleman for reasons that fans would still challenge. In the years since the trade, it has grown increasingly difficult to say New York came out on the losing end. With that first-round pick, Gettleman drafted defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who's now one of the top defensive players in the sport. Beckham, meanwhile, has posted just one 1,000-yard season since leaving New York. He hasn't come particularly close since doing so in 2019. Even so, the feeling that things could have been different in East Rutherford has lingered well past Gettleman's tenure. On 'Beckham and Friends Live,' the receiver shared an emotional confession about the Giants. "I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants," Beckham said. "The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was pissed because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over. Advertisement "This was the organization I got drafted to. They believed in me. So if the Giants went and won a Super Bowl, I would be happy. But deep down inside, I wanted to be the one. No question. So it's definitely you'll always hold that. But then someone like me, I went to the LA Rams, won a Super Bowl. But still, you just want that." Maybe Beckham would have done enough to elevate Daniel Jones, who the team drafted at No. 6, just 11 picks before Lawrence. Perhaps he would have been more productive without the chemistry- and scheme-based issues that plagued his Browns tenure. The fact that the New York faithful didn't get to see it will continue to haunt the organization. Beckham, having won with the Rams, fell short with the Baltimore Ravens, and was forgotten with the Miami Dolphins. His career may very well be over. The Giants will hope history doesn't repeat itself with the LSU standout following in his footsteps. Advertisement Sanders has been all over social media following his historic slide during the 2025 NFL draft, in which he was projected by many analysts to go in the first round but fell all the way to the fifth before being grabbed by the Browns with the 144th overall pick. The 23-year-old signal-caller is locked into a heated battle in a loaded QB room with Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco, former first-round pick Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who was drafted two rounds before Sanders. Some believe Sanders if fourth on the depth chart just a few weeks away from training camp, and ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi recently stated the former Colorado QB is at risk of being cut during camp. And while Sanders will likely be the most-talked about storyline for the rest of the Browns' offseason, he recently opened up about how he feels competing with three other passers for the starting job on his YouTube channel. Advertisement 'It's lit,' Sanders said. 'Quarterback room is fun. Every day is fun going in there. Everything is real good, I'm happy. We got a bunch of different personalities in the quarterback room, and just talking to the quarterbacks that took NFL snaps, that played in the league, you're living the experience through them also and ask them whatever questions come to mind.' Some believe Sanders is a longshot to make the Browns' roster considering teams rarely carry four QBs on their regular-season roster. Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of wrote earlier this month that Pickett is actually believed to be the leader in the clubhouse to be the team's QB1. 'It's a tough call before we've even seen the first practice of organized team activities, but I know Kenny Pickett heads in as the frontrunner to win the starting job at the outset,' Cabot wrote. 'He'll take the initial first-team reps in OTAs and probably the mandatory minicamp, and it seems like it's his job to try to keep for now.'
