Browns beat writer has flaming critique on QB Dillon Gabriel
The Cleveland Browns are through one week of OTAs, and there are already takes being thrown around about rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
And for once, the spotlight is actually on the third round pick Gabriel, rather than the fifth rounder, Sanders. It's not necessarily in a positive light, however, as The Athletic's Zac Jackson has raised concerns regarding how the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year has looked thus far. And from his eyes, it has not been overly impressive.
Here is what Jackson of The Athletic had to say on the former UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon quarterback who the Browns selected with the 94th overall pick in the draft:
"Dillon Gabriel does not look like an NFL quarterback to me. Like zero percent... I just don't think any other team was taking him in the top-100 or even the top-150. If I am wrong and the Cleveland Browns have their quarterback, that would be great. One of these years, I would love to cover a normal franchise and a rookie quarterback that sticks around for more than 6-to-18 months. But if it's Dillon Gabriel, I will be beyond shocked."
It's way too early to make any definitive statement about the Browns' quarterback situation heading into what will be a hotly contested battle throughout training camp. We'll see if Gabriel is catching the attention of the coaching staff thus far more than he is the local media.

Browns HC Kevin Stefanski Makes Major Announcement on Starting QB
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Cleveland Browns are still one of the only teams that have a four-way quarterback battle going on, and the days are running out regarding who will be named the starter. In fact, it would be believed that head coach Kevin Stefanski should be picking the starter before the third and final preseason game. More news: Ben Roethlisberger Predicts Steelers Will Cut Surprising Preseason Star The usual case for the third preseason game is to act as the "dress rehearsal," meaning all starters will play at least one quarter. Stefanski has been taking his time, and rightfully so. Rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel both performed well in their starts, and Keny Pickett remains injured. Considering Joe Flacco is the only quarterback who has not played in preseason, he might be a lock for the starting job. Either way, Stefanski has finally offered a major update on the current quarterback battle and starter conversation. Asked Browns coach Kevin Stefanski who would start at QB for the dress rehearsal game/preseason finale vs. the Rams and the timeline for naming a Week 1 starter. 'I want to get through the next couple days but that's something that we're gonna do here sooner than later ... i need to get the football team in here, talk to the players ... we're working towards Week 1. That's part of what this week is about, getting our football team ready. So, we'll make all those determinations in the next couple days.'" Shedeur Sanders #12 of the Cleveland Browns reacts after a first down during the first half of an NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium on August 08, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina. MoreApparently, Stefanski will take the next couple of days to decide, but it sounds as though he will discuss the starter with the team, and that starter should be named before the final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Again, Flacco has been the frontrunner, so it would not be shocking if he were to take most of the first-team reps heading into the Rams game. Still, Sanders and Gabriel showed enough to be in the conversation as well. Sanders played in the first preseason game, logging 14-for-23 attempts, 138 yards, two touchdowns, and four carries for 19 yards. Read more: Did Dillon Gabriel Do Better Than Shedeur Sanders in Browns Debut? Gabriel logged 13-for-18 attempts, 143 yards, and one interception. He also secured one yard on two carries. Gabriel threw a costly pick-six and lost a fumble on a botched carry. While mistakes like this happen in preseason, it might affect his position once the regular season comes around. The Browns' first two depth charts had Flacco as QB1, Pickett as QB2, Gabriel as QB3, and Sanders as QB4. It would be believed that if Flacco lands QB1, the backup spot would go to Sanders or Gabriel. Pickett might be the odd man out at this point. Stefanski is close to naming a starter, but now the backup and third emergency quarterback slots will get very interesting. For more on the Browns, head to Newsweek Sports.

Luka Doncic diagnosed with left knee contusion, will continue to play for Slovenia at EuroBasket
This looked like it could have been much worse in the moment, with Luka Doncic's Slovenian teammate Gregor Hrovat falling and crashing into his knee during an exhibition game against Latvia. Luka Doncic's teammate fell into him and the Lakers star appeared to injure his knee. Doncic asked out of the game and went back to the Slovenia locker room. While Doncic limped back to the locker room after this, he was diagnosed with just a knee contusion, reports Marc Stein. Doncic will return to practice with the Slovenian team on Monday as they gear up for the start of EuroBasket at the end of the month, adds Dan Woike of The Athletic. A source tells me Luka Dončić escaped today without any significant injury and will remain with the Slovenian national team and continue to compete in EuroBasket this summer. With Doncic, Slovenia has a chance to medal at the European championships (they are sixth in betting odds to win the entire thing, according to Bet MGM). He is the heart and soul of their team, as evidenced by his 26 points, five rebounds and five assists against Latvia in the first half. With Doncic out, Latvia went on an 18-0 run and went on to win the exhibition, behind 20 points from Kristaps Porzingis and 16 from Davis Bertans.

Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick docuseries no longer coming to ESPN, citing ‘creative differences'
A much-publicized, multi-part documentary series for ESPN Films about former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is no longer proceeding with the company. 'ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,' an ESPN spokesperson told The Athletic. 'Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film.' Advertisement Reuters first reported the news Saturday night. The global news agency spoke with Lee on the red carpet ahead of the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation dinner, a fundraiser for cancer research and treatment, in Beverly Hills, Calif. Lee told Reuters, 'It's not coming out. That's all I can say.' When asked why, Lee declined specifics, citing a nondisclosure agreement. A source briefed on the breakup confirmed to The Athletic that it was due to creative differences, but the source declined to provide specifics, saying that the two sides failed to get on the same page over the years the project was in development. It is believed the series can still be shopped elsewhere. Over the years, there has been reporting about the production delays of the docuseries that had been tentatively titled 'Da Saga of Colin Kaepernick.' Lee told The Washington Post in 2023, 'We're still working on it. You know, when I got the call to do it, from Kap, I said, 'Of course.' But it takes time. This is an opportunity for him to tell his story at length.' Puck's Matt Belloni reported last September on what he noted as creative differences in the vision of where the focus of the docuseries should be between Kaepernick's story and a broader telling of the history of Black athletes in professional sports and social justice. Now, three weeks before the start of the NFL season, the project is done at ESPN. Within this ecosystem, ESPN recently acquired the league's NFL Network and substantial rights to RedZone, along with other content assets, in exchange for the NFL getting a 10 percent ownership stake in ESPN. One of the overriding questions about the deal will be how ESPN covers its financial partner heading forward. The deal remains subject to regulatory approval from the Trump administration. The news comes in stark contrast to how the relationship began between Disney and Kaepernick. In 2020, in a splashy press release, the Walt Disney Company announced a first-look deal with Kaepernick's production arm. Disney said the 'partnership will focus on telling scripted and unscripted stories that explore race, social injustice and the quest for equity, and will provide a new platform to showcase the work of Black and Brown directors and producers.' Advertisement 'Colin's experience gives him a unique perspective on the intersection of sports, culture and race,' Disney executive chairman Bob Iger said at the time, 'which will undoubtedly create compelling stories that will educate, enlighten and entertain, and we look forward to working with him on this important collaboration.' During his six-year career with the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick passed for 12,271 yards and 72 touchdowns with 30 interceptions. He also rushed for 2,300 yards and 13 scores during that stretch and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2013. He compiled a 28-30 record as a starter. Kaepernick last played in the NFL during the 2016 season when he began to protest police brutality against Black people and systemic injustice against people of color by kneeling during the national anthem. He's continued to express a desire over the years to play in the NFL again, but never returned to the league. Spot the pattern.
