Patna: CM
Nitish Kumar
on Saturday tied a rakhi to a tree at Rajdhani Vatika in Patna to spread awareness about environmental conservation on the occasion of
Rakshabandhan
and 'Bihar Vriksha Suraksha Diwas'.
Nitish also planted a sapling in the popular park located on Strand Road in the state capital.
Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, environment, forest and climate change (EFCC) minister Sunil Kumar, additional chief secretary of the department Harjot Kaur Bamhrah, Patna divisional commissioner Chandra Shekhar Singh and several other senior officials were present on the occasion.
The state govt has been observing Bihar Vriksha Suraksha Diwas since 2012 to protect the state's green cover and safeguard the environment.
The practice of tying rakhis to trees on Rakshabandhan was initiated by Nitish in 2012.
"The main purpose behind observing Bihar Vriksha Suraksha Diwas is to make people aware of the environment, encourage them to protect trees and take an interest in planting as many saplings as possible. Plantation drives are being carried out on a large scale under various schemes, including the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan," said a communique issued by the chief minister's office.
