Rod Serling Day celebrates the life of Binghamton's favorite son

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Fifth graders from all seven Binghamton elementary schools celebrated the legacy of the city's favorite son on Friday. Rod Serling Day had a different format this year, being held at Horace Mann Elementary because of its proximity to Rec Park. As in previous years, Serling's daughter Anne was the guest of honor, and she recounted to the children her memories of her famous father, especially focusing on his sense of humor. Leading up to the day, the fifth graders learned about classic Twilight Zone episodes and their underlying messages supporting compassion and tolerance. 'I feel that this is and my father would have felt that this is one of his greatest accolades, that fifth grade students are learning about the messages of the Twilight Zone, which I feel we need now more than ever. I'm so honored, as my Dad would have been, that these teachers do such a tremendous job and these kids are so great,' said Anne. After the assembly inside the school, the children went to Rec Park to participate in a variety of stations. They learned about the new bronze statue of Serling that was installed last year, Binghamton High School students did a staged reading of one of his famous Twilight Zone episodes, and the kids got to ride the same carousel that Serling once did. The day ended with a picnic lunch. Sneaker Drive honors the life of Noah Farrelly

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local nonprofit is honoring the life of a young athlete through a sneaker drive and fun-filled community events. The Noah Farrelly Memorial Fund is delivering 500 pairs of running sneakers to students across the Binghamton City School District. The donation is part of the non-profit's Farrelly's Feet initiative, which has donated over 2,000 pairs of shoes since its founding in 2019. The fund was organized in honor of Noah Farrelly, who was a Binghamton High School Graduate and a member of the Stony Brook Cross Country team. The 18-year-old was tragically struck by a vehicle while out for a run in December of 2018. Noah's mother and President of the Fund, Bridgette Farrelly-Hess, says the shoe donations are leaving a lasting impact. 'I'm a substitute teacher here in Binghamton Schools. It warms my heart when I'm in a building and I can spot shoes on children's feet that I know came from our program, and it's just a fantastic feeling that we can see the good that we're doing in action,' said Farrelly-Hess. Along with the drive, the fund also provides scholarships, raises awareness about running safety, and organizes races and field days. The 7th Annual Noah Farrelly Run and Southside Field Day is taking place this Sunday and will feature 5k and 10k races, a kickball tournament, inflatables, face painting, and more family activities. Binghamton High School recognized for musical excellence

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton City School District is one of over a thousand schools and districts across the country being recognized for making music part of a well-rounded education. News 34 was in the chorus room of Binghamton High School Tuesday morning as students were rehearsing for the annual Taste of Broadway cabaret. Binghamton has been named to the NAMM Foundation's Best Communities for Music Education list. Fine Arts Department Chair Ariana Koniuto says Binghamton provides musical opportunities at all levels, with violin and chorus beginning in 3rd grade and band in 4th. By the time they get to the high school, students have a number of bands, orchestras, ensembles, and choruses to choose from. Koniuto says the district provides musical opportunities to all students regardless of their interest or talent. 'We recognize that music is such a fundamental part of who we are as humans, and that a strong connection to the school community and a strong music background really helps our students in all other areas of their education,' said Koniuto. Special offerings at Binghamton High School include modern band and music production classes as well as the well-known steel drum band. Other local districts on the Best Communities list are Candor, Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley, Johnson City, Maine-Endwell, Owego-Apalachin, and Windsor. ‘Beautiful Mistake' on display now at The Cooperative Gallery 213

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local abstract artist is inviting the community to participate in an interactive experience as she discusses her current art show. Natalie Dadamio's exhibition 'Beautiful Mistake' is currently on view at The Cooperative Gallery 213 in Binghamton. The show consists of 18 paintings and two drawing wall installations. Dadamio uses simple line, shape, and form to convey a deeper meaning about the unexpected moments that happen in our lives. Her work focuses on the use of color and emotion. Dadamio says art, like life, is all about surprises. 'I really work with a lot of raw emotion, and the process is very important to me. The happy accidents, the little moments, the surprises, it's kind of an intricate journey just like life,' said Dadamio. Dadamio is hosting an interactive Artist Talk on Thursday at 7 p.m. at The Cooperative Gallery 213. During the event, she will discuss her creative process. There will also be demonstrations that those in attendance can participate in. Dadamio's 'Beautiful Mistake' will be on display throughout the remainder of the month. Renowned composer visits Binghamton High School chorus

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Chorus students at Binghamton High School got to learn directly from the man whose arrangements they'll be singing in their end of year concert this week. Renowned choral composer and director Kirby Shaw was a guest in the Helen Foley Theater on Tuesday to work with the young vocalists. Shaw has nearly 3,000 choral compositions and arrangements in print and has sold over 20 million copies of his music. On Tuesday, he provided feedback to Jennifer Easley's choral students who are preparing for their Spring concert on Thursday. Shaw had this basic advice for the young singers. 'At the most basic level, keep music in your life. It's good for the world. Music has a ripple effect, make it a good one. This will make the world a little bit better every time you open your mouths and sing a song,' said Shaw. Kirby will attend Thursday evening's performance and he's looking forward to hearing what the students do with his arrangements.
