'Racist attack': Indian national beaten, partially stripped in Ireland; envoy demands justice

Representative image (X @TallaghtAF) An Indian-origin man was brutally assaulted and partially stripped by a group of attackers in Tallaght, Dublin, on Saturday evening in what authorities and local leaders are calling a suspected racist attack. The man, in his 40s, who had arrived in Ireland just three weeks earlier, suffered visible injuries to his face, arms, and legs and was seen bleeding heavily in photos circulated online. He was taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment and discharged early Sunday morning. Garda, Irish National Police, confirmed that they were alerted to the incident around 6 pm on Parkhill Road and have since launched an investigation. No arrests have been made yet. India's Ambassador to Ireland, Akhilesh Mishra, condemned the assault on social media platform X, writing, "How can an "ALLEGED" assault cause such horrible injury & bleeding?" He thanked the Irish public and Garda for their support and urged swift justice for the victim. According to Garda sources as cited by The Irish Times, false rumours that the man had acted inappropriately around children were spread online, including by known far-right and anti-immigrant accounts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dubai's Next Icon: Experience Binghatti Aquarise Luxury Binghatti Developers FZE Learn More Undo Authorities have confirmed there is no truth to these claims. Local Fine Gael councillor Baby Pereppadan met the victim on Monday and said he remained in deep shock. . "He couldn't speak much because of the shock he was in, he only arrived in Ireland three weeks ago. He is not taking any visitors at the moment,' Pereppadan said, as quoted by the Irish Independent. Calling for increased police presence, he added: "People need to understand that many Indian people moving to Ireland are here on work permits, to study and work in the healthcare sector or in IT and so on, providing critical skills." Investigators believe some of the suspects may be linked to other recent unprovoked attacks on foreign nationals in the Tallaght area. The case remains under active investigation.

MP horror: Dalit youths stripped, beaten with chilli paste; cops accused of brutal abuse of power

BHOPAL: Four Dalit youths have accused police in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district of illegal detention and custodial torture. The youths claim they were stripped, beaten for four days, and had chilli powder rubbed into their private parts to force a confession in a theft case. The victims, residents of the Kanjadpur Dharampura area, said they were returning from a housewarming ceremony on July 15 when they stopped to urinate by the roadside. A Dial-100 police vehicle allegedly picked them up without explanation. One youth, who is disabled, was released, while the remaining four were taken to the police station, hung upside down, beaten with belts, and tortured. Police had earlier claimed to have arrested five individuals for stealing transformer oil. The incident triggered protests by Bhim Army workers and the victims' families, who marched to the SP office demanding action under the SC/ST Act and suspension of the accused policemen. A sit-in was staged outside the SP office, where authorities responded by locking the gates and cutting power to the premises. DIG Lalit Shakyawar later visited the site and assured that a medical examination would be conducted and action taken after investigation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dubai's Next Icon: Experience Binghatti Aquarise Luxury Binghatti Developers FZE Learn More Undo Three of the victims have since undergone medical tests. 'We have asked a senior officer to investigate the matter. CCTV footage from inside the police station is being examined,' said Chhatarpur SP Agam Jain. Families also allege that one of the five detained youths is missing and fear he may have died in custody. A victim's father-in-law further accused the police of threatening him with arrest and eviction from government land if the protest continued. Former Congress MLA Neeraj Dixit also visited the protest site and demanded justice. A heavy police force from multiple stations has been deployed. Investigations are currently underway.

Every city must have chief information security officer, says home secretary

Home secretary Govind Mohan (File photo) NEW DELHI: Every city should have a chief information security officer (CISO) to ensure protection of data and systems from cyber threats, Union home secretary Govind Mohan said on Thursday while addressing a meeting on cybersecurity preparedness of Indian cities. He urged states and city administrations to always be on alert about cyber threats and carry out regular audits of their systems and network security. Sources said Mohan also highlighted the need for cities to create their own capacity to deal with technology integration and protect the system, rather than depending on consultants and private players. The meeting was attended by top officials of electronics and IT, home and urban affairs ministries, besides representatives from Intelligence Bureau, UIDAI and state govts. 'There is a huge focus on data security and cyber hygiene, particularly since the 100 smart cities have made huge progress in technology integration. IB officials pointed to how there is need to be ever ready since cyber threats have emerged as a huge challenge with more data on properties, water supply and transportation systems getting digitised,' said an official. Sources said housing and urban affairs secretary K Srinivas announced the ministry's plan to come up with a scheme for the 100 smart cities to take forward the data and technology integration works they have done. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dubai's Next Icon: Experience Binghatti Aquarise Luxury Binghatti Developers FZE Learn More Undo 'The Centre's scheme will ensure continuity of the 100 common command and control centres that manage the IT backbone and data of the cities,' said a source. Cybersecurity in smart cities is crucial because of their reliance on interconnected digital technologies for essential services. These face cybersecurity challenges stemming from their complex infrastructure, including vulnerabilities in IoT devices, data breaches, and potential disruptions of critical services.

Stall promotions of associate professors in Telangana's govt medical colleges, says doctors

The promotion of 278 associate professors in Telangana medical colleges faces delays HYDERABAD: The long-awaited promotion of 278 associate professors in Telangana's govt medical colleges has hit a roadblock amid growing pressure from various doctors' associations. Each group is lobbying for a different set of priorities, stalling the process and creating administrative deadlock. The promotions, meant to elevate associate professors to full professors and address critical faculty shortages , have become entangled in competing demands over urban postings and transfer policies. While many associate professors are insisting on being posted to city hospitals upon promotion, some doctors' unions argue that existing professors currently serving in rural areas should be given priority to move to urban centres first. Only then, they claim, can the actual vacancy situation be assessed to guide fresh postings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dubai's Next Icon: Experience Binghatti Aquarise Luxury Binghatti Developers FZE Learn More Undo Govt-affiliated doctors' associations contend that this realignment would not negatively affect the career paths of either senior or junior faculty. They argue it is essential for rational deployment and quality improvement in medical education. In a recent meeting with director of medical education (DME) Dr A Narendra Kumar, a group of around 100 doctors urged the immediate transfer of faculty who have been serving at the same institution for years. They also demanded better incentives for those teaching at peripheral colleges. Doctors' groups claim that urban postings are being sidelined in the current promotion considerations. Tensions have also risen over concerns that the promotion process may be deliberately delayed. Some doctors allege attempts to block associate professors' advancement, while others believe the process is merely being calibrated to ensure fairness across the board. The govt, however, maintains that Gandhi and Osmania colleges already meet National Medical Council faculty norms, while doctors' associations report 107 vacancies in Greater Hyderabad and 240 in rural areas. They are pushing for the transfer of about 70 professors who have served in district hospitals for years before promotions are processed. In a letter to DME, the teaching hospital associations demanded that associate professor promotions be held off until this realignment is completed.
