Birdland: Identical triplets take the WA music scene by storm

Will these Perth triplets be the world's next big boy band? Conrad, Oscar and Francis Cvitan have been turning heads across WA for their identical look, and their incredible musical talent. They are the 16-year-old brothers behind the WA band Birdland. With over 185k followers on TikTok and a WAM Song of The Year nomination under their belts, the teenage trio shows just how far raw talent and a good hook can go. Francis — who plays guitar and sings — agrees that international attention is mind-blowing. 'It feels very flattering, it's wonderful to see us have such a reach in audience,' he said. 'We wouldn't have thought this year we would be having people in Brazil and Indonesia and the Philippines and America and the UK hearing our music, saying, 'it's really amazing'.' In typical sibling fashion the brothers can't agree on which genre Birdland's music falls under but say it's safe to say it's a combination of Indie, Funk, and Pop. Their music has been compared to Rex Orange Country, Crowded House, and Maroon 5. Despite the bands uncertainty around genre their social media success has led fans to demand the triplets go on tour, and the Birdland brothers have devised an innovative solution. Oscar — who plays bass, sings and manages the band — said obviously, they can't travel worldwide yet, but they have been using the live stream function on social media to perform online concerts. 'It's accessible, and people get to hear it and see what we're really like,' he said. Although the brother's success exceeded expectations, Birdland has set bigger goals for the future. For Conrad — who plays the drums and sings — the next milestone will be to play at a sold-out local venue where fans sing along to their songs. 'My biggest dream for our band is to play at Scarborough Amphitheatre with a packed out crowd and them singing our songs,' he said. Francis is aiming for a bigger venue with a few more people. 'Playing in front of 1000 people while they sing our songs, actually, let's dream bigger, let's go 10,000 people while they sing our songs, and not at Scarborough Amphitheatre,' he joked. Birdland is reeling in local recognition, along with its international support and social media success. 'It's really cool. I didn't expect that to happen, but I'm very happy and very excited,' Conrad said. The 16-year-old stars have a strong foothold in the WA music scene, playing multiple local gigs, including opening The West Australian Pulse exhibition earlier in the month. Birdland's second single, On My Mind — inspired by Francis' recent breakup — drops at the end of June. For West Aussies keen to see the next big boy band live, they will be playing at Y HQ in Leederville on June 20 for the launch of their new single.

Last Night in Baseball: Shohei Ohtani is the Brian Roberts of his generation

There is always baseball happening — almost too much baseball for one person to handle themselves. That's why we're here to help, though, by sifting through the previous days' games, and figuring out what you missed, but shouldn't have. Here are all the best moments from last night in Major League Baseball: Ohtani is off to another historic start Stop us if you've heard this one before: Shohei Ohtani is doing something no one else in baseball is. One year after breaking the 50-50 barrier, and one day after crushing the hardest-hit home run of the season, he added another four-bagger to become the first player (and only, thus far) to total 10 homers and 10 stolen bases in 2025. In fact, he's the first player in 20 years to reach that mark through the first 36 games. The last to do so was, as you have probably guessed, longtime Baltimore Orioles infielder Brian Roberts. He and Ohtani? Basically the same player. Especially if Ohtani learns the Birdland dance. Giants have a HUGE inning at Wrigley Two big themes emerged from around the majors on Tuesday: high-scoring innings and walk-off wins. Four teams put up six or more runs in a single inning, led by the New York Yankees with a 10-run seventh inning. Five games were decided in the ninth inning or in extras. Only one club, the San Francisco Giants, accomplished both feats on the same night. First, the Giants blew yet another chance for Justin Verlander to get his first win with his new team. San Francisco was leading the Chicago Cubs 5-3 in the ninth, with the 42-year-old in line for the win after throwing five innings. But Verlander's winless streak extended to eight starts, the longest in his 20-season career, after the Cubs drove in the tying runs. Neither team could score in the 10th, and then suddenly the Giants couldn't stop scoring in the 11th. Their bats exploded for a Wrigley Field-record nine runs in an extra inning. Eight of those runs came off of Ryan Pressly, Verlander's former Houston Astros teammate. Pressly, whose ERA ballooned from 2.08 to 7.62, left without recording an out. Off the top of my head … Let's check in with the Chicago White Sox. Wait, let's freeze-frame that. Oh no. If you didn't know anything about the circumstances, you'd probably assume that Chase Meidroth missed a pop fly in the ninth, the ball then bounced off his head, and the Royals proceeded to rally for the win. And yeah, that's exactly what happened. Bret Boone is a miracle worker Kidding, kidding. Bret Boone did have a great first night on the job, though, in the sense he was there as the Rangers' new hitting coach, and Texas scored six runs against the Red Sox en route to a win. Every Ranger besides Josh Jung picked up at least one hit in the win, and they were one of the teams with a big inning on Tuesday: Texas scored five runs in the fourth, and did so while batting around. Corey Seager started off the inning with a ground rule double, and ended it striking out looking. The damage was already done by then, however. It helped, too, that former Red Sox hurler Nathan Eovaldi kept Boston's bats quiet with six innings of one-run ball that lowered his era to 2.03 for the season. Isn't it something when the pitching and the hitting can come together like that? Speaking of the opposite of that… Paul Skenes still cannot beat the Cardinals Paul Skenes is already one of MLB's most exciting and talented pitchers, despite this being just his second season in the bigs. He's a stud, capable of defeating any lineup on any night. Unless that lineup plays for the St. Louis Cardinals, apparently. Skenes dropped to 0-4 in five career starts against the Cards on Tuesday. Which doesn't sound that weird, really, until you realize that Skenes has just seven losses in that career: somehow, more than half of them are against St. Louis, who hasn't even been particularly good since Skenes arrived on the scene. Hell, they haven't even been that good against Skenes. Over those five starts, the Pirates' ace has limited the Cardinals to a line of .185/.224/.261 while striking out 36 batters against just six walks. He's allowed 10 runs against them, and just one homer, resulting in a 2.76 ERA in 32.2 innings of work. Tuesday night's effort was a two-run, six-inning affair, with four walks, sure, but with just three hits allowed, the damage was mostly kept to a minimum. Not enough of a minimum for the Pirates, however, as they scored just one run of support for Skenes. That's been a common theme in 2025 so far in his starts: remove the one game where Pittsburgh scored 10 runs for him, and you're left with seven starts where they've managed just 2.6 runs for him. Even someone like Skenes is going to struggle in those conditions, as far as wins and losses go. Luckily, the Pirates have a sterling reputation for committing to building a winner, so this shouldn't be a problem that Skenes has to deal with forever. [taps earpiece] oh no. DuPage youth jazz ensemble to compete at Lincoln Center in New York

The Youth Jazz Ensemble of DuPage will participate in the 2025 Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival for high school bands, May 7-11, at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. This is the fourth time that the ensemble has been chosen for this highly competitive event. Typically 15 bands are chosen from across the country, but this year, in celebration of the 30th anniversary, 30 bands were selected including three from Australia, Japan and Spain. 'In our third year, in 2001, we went to the Essentially Ellington Festival,' said Director Robert Blazek, who founded the ensemble. The group came in fourth out of the 15 competing bands. They were also selected for the festival in 2008 and 2024. There are 25 regular performers in the ensemble and four alternates representing 12 high schools in DuPage County. They are chosen by audition. In order to become one of the 15 finalists in the Essentially Ellington competition, the bands have to record three pieces from the Essentially Ellington library. 'One piece has to be from a new release this year,' Blazek said. The Youth Jazz Ensemble of DuPage submitted recordings of Duke Ellington's 'What am I Here for?' which is the new selection, 'Movin' Uptown' by Benny Carter, and 'Happy Go Lucky Locol' by Ellington. Blazek cited the benefits the young musicians get from performing in the festival. 'Yes, it's a competition, but the support that all the kids get from one another is astronomical,' he said. 'When you're on stage and you do a great solo, the other students are all going crazy for you. And they network with each other.' During the festival, Blazek said they will switch out 'What am I Here for?' and replace it with Ellington's 'The Opener.' Drummer Ryan Weaver, 18, a senior at Oswego High School, participated in last year's festival and said he is looking forward to his second time. 'I started on classical percussion when I was around 6, but I was also taking drum set lessons at 6,' Weaver said. 'I'm mainly sticking to my jazz drum set now.' He said he joined the Youth Jazz Ensemble of DuPage because he knew it was made up of all-star musicians. 'I wanted to be immersed in that community so that I could be with other musicians who were better than me so I could become better,' he said. Weaver called the chance to perform 'a surreal experience.' He also praised the opportunity to connect with musicians from across the country who share his passion for music, and said he remains in touch of some of them. Weaver said this year he is interested in connecting with musicians from Australia, Japan, and Spain. 'Music is the universal language,' he said, noting he looks forward to 'being able to communicate with each other through the music.' Weaver plans to pursue jazz studies in college but hasn't yet confirmed what school he will attend. While Blazek's group is in New York, they will have time to see a production of the musical 'Hadestown' and visit two jazz clubs, Birdland and Dizzy's Club. The celebration in honor of the band's acceptance at Essentially Ellington will start early with a sendoff concert, featuring guest saxophonist John Wojciechowski, at 4 p.m. on May 4 at Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church, 10805 Main St., Huntley. 'John's a great saxophonist, he's a high school band director and he does a lot of outside playing at jazz clubs around the city,' Blazek said. 'I think he's going to bring a neat perspective.' 'They could have asked a lot of different musicians to come and be a part of that concert,' Wojciechowski said. 'I'm honored that Rob invited me to come and do that.' Wojciechowski praised the Youth Jazz Ensemble of DuPage. 'They're an outstanding group. We're talking about some of the best young musicians in the western suburbs,' he said. 'The fact that they were invited to go to New York to participate in their Ellington Festival speaks volumes because a lot of bands try to do that and very few get invited.' At the sendoff concert, Wojciechowski will join the band in performing Bill Holman's arrangement of 'Out of Nowhere,' John Coltrane's 'Central Park West,' and an arrangement of Stevie Wonder's 'Overjoyed.'
