Shedeur Sanders knows who is ‘99 percent' to blame for online hate around him
Dislike father, dislike son. The mystery of how and why quarterback Shedeur Sanders fell to the Browns in the fifth round of the NFL draft might never be completely solved, but Sanders has his own idea as to why he seems to have so many critics before throwing his first pro pass. It's not because he is brash or arrogant. Advertisement It's because his father — Hall of Famer turned NFL Network analyst turned Colorado football coach Deion Sanders — was those things even as he backed it up as arguably the greatest cornerback of all-time. And that's why Shedeur prefers to be around kids who form their own opinions on him and don't remember his father. Jeff Lange / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Advertisement 'Ninety-nine percent of hatred (directed at me) is toward Pops,' Sanders said recently while talking to children at an Ohio school, according to 'And then I'm just his son. … But (the kids) didn't grow up in an era to where they watched him play … It's just the older generation that does it to me rather than the younger people. Because when I come in person, there's no negativity I see. But it's all over online.' The Giants were the team that spent the most pre-draft time with Sanders. Members of the front office deemed him worthy of a first-round pick, but general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll pivoted to Jaxson Dart in the days leading up to the draft. Deion Sanders said that there were a lot of lies spread about his son before the draft that led to his fall. 'That's why I say I like going [to schools] in person and actually meeting [kids],' Sanders said. 'And any questions they have, I say, 'Just ask me whatever question you want. Pick any question. No filter, no anything.' That's what they say. And then I just answer whatever they need me to answer.'

Ex-Colorado star gobsmacked by Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter number retirements: ‘Hard to stomach'
Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders might long live in Colorado football lore, but that doesn't mean one former Buffaloes star is completely thrilled that they're getting their numbers retired by the program. After two seasons in Boulder, the two ex-Colorado players were recently added to the team's list of retired jersey numbers before they were drafted by NFL teams (Jaguars and Browns, respectively.) Former Colorado quarterback Darian Hagan, who helped lead the team to a national title in 1990, said there should have been a waiting period for the two to have their numbers retired. ADs come, and ADs go,' Hagan, who also said he was 'flabbergasted,' told USA Today on Wednesday. 'We had a policy in place. Where is that policy? We need to abide by that policy.' Hagan, a two-time member of the All-Big Eight first team and Sporting News' 1989 College Football Player of the Year recipient before spending nearly two decades with the football team as a coach and staffer, does not have his number retired by the school. Advertisement He said he was stunned by the news that Hunter — the 2024 Heisman winner and Sanders — who set scores of school records — were going to be honored in such a way. 'We were always told there was a waiting period,' Hagan added. 'There was a policy in place. It had to be voted upon. I was never told that it was at the discretion of the athletic director or the head coach. That was shocking news to me. It was hard to stomach.' Earlier this month, ex-Colorado and NFL running back Phillip Lindsay said that though he had no issues with the duo getting honored, there are others who came before them who have not gotten the same tribute. 3 A general view of the luxury suites on the east side of Folsom Field shows the retired jersey numbers, including Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter of the 2023 and 2024 teams during the Black and Gold Spring Game at Folsom Field on April 19, 2025 in Boulder, Colorado. 'You don't have Darian Hagan's jersey retired, who's No. 3. You don't have Eric Bieniemy's number retired, who's No. 1. You don't have Alfred Williams', 'Big Al,' jersey retired, and they won national championships. Why all of a sudden are we starting now? Why are we skipping them?' In the lead-up to the NFL draft, head coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur's father, said the only reason this number retirements were an issue with some was because of his biological connection to the now-NFL quarterback. 3 Colorado quarterback Darian Hagan runs down the field during a game against Nebraska at Folsom Field. 'The only reason we are having this discussion is because his last name is Sanders. That's it. It's been so many things accomplished at this university expeditiously. It's been unbelievable. 'And I think we should be appreciative. It's a new day, we're doing things a little different.'

Where oddsmakers peg Shedeur Sanders' NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year chances
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. Despite his NFL Draft slide, Vegas oddsmakers are still giving Shedeur Sanders an outside shot to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Sanders, who is no guarantee to even see the field in a crowded Browns quarterback room, is +1900 to win the award, which is the eighth-best odds on the board at DraftKings Sportsbook just days removed from the draft. Among quarterbacks, Sanders has the third-best odds for a rookie quarterback behind the Titans' No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward (+230) and Saints' second-round pick Tyler Shough (+1400). Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty, who was drafted No. 6 overall last week, is the favorite at +200. Two-way star Travis Hunter, who is expected to see time at both wide receiver and cornerback after the Jaguars traded up to take him at No. 2, has the third-best odds at +750. Sanders, who was once seen as a likely top-three pick in the 2025 draft, was selected by Cleveland in the fifth round after the franchise had already taken Oregon quarterback Dillion Gabriel in the third round. The pair of rookies will compete with veteran and Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco and 2022 Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett for the starting signal-caller role in Cleveland. Betting on the NFL? Deshaun Watson, who tore his Achilles tendon in Week 7 last season, is not expected to be ready until mid-season at the earliest. Pickett is currently the betting favorite (+130) to be the Week 1 starter, followed by Flacco (+160), Sanders (+300), and Gabriel (+1000).

Shedeur Sanders could have another route to pro football outside NFL
Shedeur Sanders may have another pro football option, and it isn't in the NFL. The Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League added Sanders to their negotiation list, TSN's Dave Naylor reported on Monday night. Putting the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback on their negotiation list means that should Sanders decide to play in the CFL, then the Argonauts would have the first chance to sign Sanders. Advertisement Sanders had been taken by the Browns with the No. 144 pick in the draft that took place this past weekend after dramatically falling out of the first round and remaining on the draft board until the final day. 3 Shedeur Sanders speaks during a press conference at the NFL football scouting combine Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, in Indianapolis. AP Sanders, the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, who coached Shedeur throughout his college career, has not indicated that he has any interest in playing north of the border. Advertisement The QB prospect was the second that the Browns selected during the draft, having also picked rookie Dillon Gabriel in the third round. With Sanders now in the mix, the Browns have four total quarterbacks in their room, which includes Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, along with the two rookies and the injured Deshaun Watson. Sanders' fall from a potential top-five pick to a fifth-round selection has divided NFL fans and observers. 3 Shedeur Sanders looks on during a ceremony to retire his jersey before the Black and Gold Spring Game at Folsom Field on April 19, 2025 in Boulder, Colorado. Getty Images for ONIT Advertisement Perceived character concerns, along with Deion's involvement with his son's draft prep are believed to have factored into his drop. 'He's highly accurate. Can play well from the pocket. Very productive college career,' Browns general manager Andrew Berry said on Saturday about Sanders. 'It wasn't necessarily the plan going into the weekend to draft two quarterbacks. We believe in best player available. We didn't expect him to be available in the fifth.' 3 Deion Sanders, left, talks with quarterback Shedeur Sanders (2) during a timeout in the second half of an NCAA college football game against Central Florida, Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024. Browns HC Responds to Shedeur Sanders Prank Call Incident
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Cleveland Browns finally ended the slide of well-known quarterback Shedeur Sanders after selecting him with the 144th pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Formerly projected as a first-rounder, Sanders ended up going in the fifth round instead. A lot of people have been clowning Sanders for the fall, especially after going after multiple other quarterbacks, including his new teammate Dillon Gabriel, who went 94th overall. More NFL News: Shedeur Sanders NFL Draft Celebration Goes Viral One person even went as far as to prank call the young QB out of Colorado, which while funny to fans, was likely hurtful to Sanders and those around him. Apparently, someone somehow got access to Sanders's phone which was only supposed to receive calls from NFL general managers, and the person pretended to be Saints GM Mickey Loomis. This phone call occurred before the 40th pick in the NFL draft, which the Saints used on Tyler Shough instead. After the Browns selected Sanders in the NFL draft, head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about the prank call. Kevin Stefanski, asked about the prank call to Shedeur Sanders: "People are morons." "It's sad." — Andrew Siciliano (@AndrewSiciliano) April 26, 2025 "People are morons. It's sad." As mentioned before, the fall of Sanders, especially with his huge fame among the media due to being Deion Sanders's son, has been celebrated by fans, but a prank call of this nature is crossing the line. Especially when taking into consideration how much effort the person had to put in to get access to the number, it is especially crazy. Former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders looks on before the Black and Gold Spring Game at Folsom Field on April 19, 2025 in Boulder, ONIT The pick of Sanders itself is an interesting one, as the Browns were at one point rumored to be interested in him with the second overall pick, but instead they selected him in the fifth round as the second quarterback they selected in the draft. The Browns in general, had an interesting draft, selecting two quarterbacks and two running backs. They also traded down from the second pick in the draft to pass on Travis Hunter. More NFL news: How to Buy Shedeur Sanders Cleveland Browns Jersey Originally, people thought there was a chance that Hunter and Sanders would be teammates once again in the NFL. If the Browns hadn't traded down, that could've happened. Overall, the whole Sanders situation is a bit sad and confusing, as it seems like a lot of information fans don't know about are the reasons he fell in the draft. Just going based on his play on the field, most would agree he should've been at least a second-round pick. At least for him, his new coach is defending him and calling out someone who crossed the line in hating on his draft stock.
