Ex-Colorado star gobsmacked by Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter number retirements: ‘Hard to stomach'

New York Post01-05-2025

Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders might long live in Colorado football lore, but that doesn't mean one former Buffaloes star is completely thrilled that they're getting their numbers retired by the program.
After two seasons in Boulder, the two ex-Colorado players were recently added to the team's list of retired jersey numbers before they were drafted by NFL teams (Jaguars and Browns, respectively.)
Former Colorado quarterback Darian Hagan, who helped lead the team to a national title in 1990, said there should have been a waiting period for the two to have their numbers retired.

'It should not be at the discretion of the athletic director and the head coach. Head coaches come. Head coaches go. ADs come, and ADs go,' Hagan, who also said he was 'flabbergasted,' told USA Today on Wednesday. 'We had a policy in place. Where is that policy? We need to abide by that policy.'
Hagan, a two-time member of the All-Big Eight first team and Sporting News' 1989 College Football Player of the Year recipient before spending nearly two decades with the football team as a coach and staffer, does not have his number retired by the school.

He said he was stunned by the news that Hunter — the 2024 Heisman winner and Sanders — who set scores of school records — were going to be honored in such a way.
'We were always told there was a waiting period,' Hagan added. 'There was a policy in place. It had to be voted upon. I was never told that it was at the discretion of the athletic director or the head coach. That was shocking news to me. It was hard to stomach.'
Earlier this month, ex-Colorado and NFL running back Phillip Lindsay said that though he had no issues with the duo getting honored, there are others who came before them who have not gotten the same tribute.

'These players that have pretty much led us and set a standard, they don't even have their jerseys retired,' Lindsay said on 104.3 The Fan. 'You don't have Darian Hagan's jersey retired, who's No. 3. You don't have Eric Bieniemy's number retired, who's No. 1. You don't have Alfred Williams', 'Big Al,' jersey retired, and they won national championships. Why all of a sudden are we starting now? Why are we skipping them?'
In the lead-up to the NFL draft, head coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur's father, said the only reason this number retirements were an issue with some was because of his biological connection to the now-NFL quarterback.

'We talking about Shedeur, we ain't talking about nobody else,' Deion said, according to The Athletic. 'The only reason we are having this discussion is because his last name is Sanders. That's it. It's been so many things accomplished at this university expeditiously. It's been unbelievable.
'And I think we should be appreciative. It's a new day, we're doing things a little different.'

Jordan Seaton Challenged by Deion Sanders' Colorado Staff to Lead by Example

Jordan Seaton Challenged by Deion Sanders' Colorado Staff to Lead by Example originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jordan Seaton has embraced his new leadership role at Colorado. The former five-star has become the face of the Buffs and leads by example. The latest request from his coaches shows his growth over the past year. CU strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey challenged the team to become 'attractive'. He explained his request and how it applies to football. Advertisement 'Become attractive men. In football, to a coach, to your teammates, being attractive is being somebody that people look up to and want to be motivated from. Be attractive men. It will help the team be more successful if you take care of yourself,' Swasey said. Seaton developed in his freshman season. There was no waiting on the sidelines with the one-time IMG Academy product starting immediately. With the absence of names like Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, CamRon Silmon-Craig, and others who have departed the program for life after college, a leadership void was expected. However, Seaton has chosen to fill that void in a big way. Some of the new Colorado players have become adjusted to live in Boulder. Every year the same thing happens. New recruits and transfers arrive in Boulder for summer camp, and some find out very quickly that the elevation and thin mountain air is a real thing. It is not uncommon for new players to face an adjustment period. In today's conditioning periods, multiple players were seen gassed and even in danger of suffering from altitude sickness. Two years ago, a viral video surfaced of former CU five-star Cormani McClain struggling to adjust with none of his teammates helping him out. Today's workout revealed Jordan Seaton has no intention of allowing that to happen. As players began to show signs of sickness, he was there for them. Terrell Timmons, Brandon Davis-Swain and Tyler Brown could be seen assisting players to catch their breath with Seaton nearby off camera. He allowed for a breather but would not accept quitting on the conditioning. 'Okay, but he's not quitting, he ain't quitting,' Seaton declared. After each run, he would check back with words of encouragement. Before too long, even those struggling pushed themselves to get back to the line to run the sprint. Before long players like Seaton and Yahya Attia were asking Swasey to 'blow it' as if they weren't interested in resting between reps. While this team under Deion Sanders has never been 'out for self', there is a strong sense of 'we' over 'me' early in this offseason. While everyone seems to be bought in on the concept, it's becoming very clear that Seaton intends to be the vocal leader of this football team. Jaxson Dart's Terrible OTAs Left Fans in Disbelief About Skipping Shedeur Sanders

Jaxson Dart's Terrible OTAs Left Fans in Disbelief About Skipping Shedeur Sanders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As Shedeur Sanders continues to trend upwards with the Cleveland Browns, another rookie quarterback is having a hard time getting adjusted. Advertisement There weren't many teams past the Tennessee Titans who needed a QB in the 2025 NFL Draft. But one team in particular, the New York Giants, was shopping aggressively. Sanders was linked to the G-Men in the pre-draft process for several reasons. They held a top-five pick, sent all of their scouting staff to Boulder for CU's Pro Day, and had a well-documented history of courting Sanders during the 2024 season. But in the end, the Giants skipped Sanders and trading up at the end of the first round to select Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart. It was the beginning of Sanders' slide. But was that a costly mistake for Brian Daboll and his staff? With OTAs underway, Dart has yet to have a spectacular day in the Meadowlands. The former Rebels passer reportedly went 5-for-9 with two interceptions on Thursday. Related: Browns OC Sends Clear Message About Shedeur Sanders in QB Battle Many people are now questioning if the Giants made the wrong decision by not taking Sanders. Of course, these are just practices and there's nothing at real game speed. However, the pressure is on for Daboll and his staff to show progress during the upcoming season, according to sources. It's the reason why New York signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency. Advertisement Related: Deion Sanders Reveals He's Been Battling Health Issues During Offseason Whether or not Dart's struggles will set off alarms for the Giants remains to be seen. Still, there will be a point where passing of Sanders might be a regret for New York and other NFL teams. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 6, 2025, where it first appeared.
