Deion Sanders' QB dilemma: Ex-NFL scout warns against benching Julian Lewis

Photo byfor ONIT Deion Sanders has never backed away from bold decisions, but one of the biggest choices of his Colorado coaching career is staring him down: who will start at quarterback in 2025? With Shedeur Sanders off to the NFL, Coach Prime is now evaluating Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and blue-chip freshman Julian 'JuJu' Lewis. But former Alabama standout and ex-Buffalo Bills scout Gerald 'Smoke' Dixon has a word of caution — one that could shape Colorado's future and keep the Buffs' rebuild on course. Deion Sanders' quarterback decision could shape Colorado Buffaloes ' long-term future Gerald 'Smoke' Dixon knows what success looks like at both the collegiate and professional levels. As a four-year starter at Alabama and a former NFL scout with the Buffalo Bills, Dixon has seen how quickly programs can shift — for better or worse. Now, as Colorado enters its next phase under Deion Sanders, he's weighing in with advice only someone with his experience can give. While speaking on the Ultimate College Football Show by 24/7Sports, Dixon weighed in on Colorado's quarterback competition, which features experienced Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and highly touted freshman Julian Lewis. His recommendation? A two-quarterback system — but with clear expectations and foresight. Photo byfor ONIT "You can't leave a four-star, talented player like JuJu Lewis on the sideline all season, and you can't play Kaidon all year, just because I think he's gonna get banged up," Dixon explained. "When you have a young guy like JuJu, if you keep him on the sideline for a long time, I only know one place where he's going to end up: the transfer portal." Dixon's comments come as Colorado looks to build on a surprising 9-4 season in 2024, a run that helped vault Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders into the NFL. Yet despite the Buffs' success, protecting the quarterback remains a concern — Shedeur was sacked 42 times last year, and Coach Prime has called on his offensive line to step up in 2025. With high-profile recruits and transfer talent at his disposal, Deion Sanders has the pieces to make Colorado a contender. But as Dixon warns, keeping a young star like Julian Lewis engaged might be just as important as naming a starter. The wrong decision could send the Buffs' future walking. Ex-Colorado star gobsmacked by Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter number retirements: ‘Hard to stomach'

Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders might long live in Colorado football lore, but that doesn't mean one former Buffaloes star is completely thrilled that they're getting their numbers retired by the program. After two seasons in Boulder, the two ex-Colorado players were recently added to the team's list of retired jersey numbers before they were drafted by NFL teams (Jaguars and Browns, respectively.) Former Colorado quarterback Darian Hagan, who helped lead the team to a national title in 1990, said there should have been a waiting period for the two to have their numbers retired. ADs come, and ADs go,' Hagan, who also said he was 'flabbergasted,' told USA Today on Wednesday. 'We had a policy in place. Where is that policy? We need to abide by that policy.' Hagan, a two-time member of the All-Big Eight first team and Sporting News' 1989 College Football Player of the Year recipient before spending nearly two decades with the football team as a coach and staffer, does not have his number retired by the school. Advertisement He said he was stunned by the news that Hunter — the 2024 Heisman winner and Sanders — who set scores of school records — were going to be honored in such a way. 'We were always told there was a waiting period,' Hagan added. 'There was a policy in place. It had to be voted upon. I was never told that it was at the discretion of the athletic director or the head coach. That was shocking news to me. It was hard to stomach.' Earlier this month, ex-Colorado and NFL running back Phillip Lindsay said that though he had no issues with the duo getting honored, there are others who came before them who have not gotten the same tribute. 3 A general view of the luxury suites on the east side of Folsom Field shows the retired jersey numbers, including Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter of the 2023 and 2024 teams during the Black and Gold Spring Game at Folsom Field on April 19, 2025 in Boulder, Colorado. 'You don't have Darian Hagan's jersey retired, who's No. 3. You don't have Eric Bieniemy's number retired, who's No. 1. You don't have Alfred Williams', 'Big Al,' jersey retired, and they won national championships. Why all of a sudden are we starting now? Why are we skipping them?' In the lead-up to the NFL draft, head coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur's father, said the only reason this number retirements were an issue with some was because of his biological connection to the now-NFL quarterback. 3 Colorado quarterback Darian Hagan runs down the field during a game against Nebraska at Folsom Field. Getty Images Advertisement 'We talking about Shedeur, we ain't talking about nobody else,' Deion said, according to The Athletic. 'The only reason we are having this discussion is because his last name is Sanders. That's it. It's been so many things accomplished at this university expeditiously. It's been unbelievable. 'And I think we should be appreciative. It's a new day, we're doing things a little different.'

NFL legend Michael Irvin defends Shedeur Sanders after NFL draft snub: "This sh*t is shady"

Photo byfor ONIT The NFL Draft is supposed to be a celebration of dreams realized. But for Shedeur Sanders , it's turned into a long, painful wait. Instead of following in his father Deion's footsteps—who dominated the 1989 draft scene with unmatched confidence—Shedeur sat in his draft suite, cameras rolling, forced to smile through disappointment. Round after round, night after night, the pick never came. And now, NFL legend Michael Irvin has broken his silence, sounding the alarm with a message that's hard to ignore: something smells shady about Shedeur's shocking slide. Michael Irvin accuses NFL franchises of passing on Shedeur Sanders for non-football reasons Michael Irvin didn't hold back when speaking on Shedeur Sanders ' shocking freefall through the 2025 NFL Draft. The Hall of Famer and longtime family friend didn't mince words: 'The NFL, for me, already — this looks funny. This looks fishy. I am sorry,' Irvin said, voice heavy with frustration. To Irvin, it's personal. Football was the ticket that lifted him out of poverty and into greatness. 'I told you how much I love and respect [football] because it gives a brother like me — a young brother that had nothing — an opportunity to get out… How can you not love so much that thing that brought you out of a hellhole and gave you a life?' Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo Irvin laid out the facts: Shedeur wasn't lacking production. He passed for over 4,000 yards, tossed 27 touchdowns, and carried himself with leadership teams should be dying to have under center. 'We can't talk about, 'well he didn't get enough play,' because he threw for 4,000 yards. We can't talk about, 'well he didn't make enough plays'—he was the best player of the year. Nor can we say, 'Well it's not a position of need'—he plays quarterback,' Irvin argued passionately. Taking it a step further, Irvin dove into the scouting details: 'I never, in all my time of watching this young man, saw him snap that ball on one hash and dirt a long out to the other hash. That ball always got out there. Always.' Still, despite the tape, despite the numbers, Shedeur sits waiting. Reports hint that teams are worried about his "coachability," his "entourage," and the media frenzy he would naturally bring. In a league that still expects backup QBs to be invisible, Shedeur's larger-than-life presence may have worked against him. Also Read: Why the Pittsburgh Steelers passed on Shedeur Sanders: Mike Tomlin's shocking draft decision explained As Day 3 looms, the question grows louder: is Shedeur Sanders being judged for his game—or for the brand he represents? Michael Irvin believes it's clear: 'This sh*t is shady. This is shady.' Now, all Shedeur can do is stay patient, stay poised, and wait for the one team brave enough to see the player—not just the spotlight.
