Deion Sanders' QB dilemma: Ex-NFL scout warns against benching Julian Lewis
Deion Sanders has never backed away from bold decisions, but one of the biggest choices of his Colorado coaching career is staring him down: who will start at quarterback in 2025? With Shedeur Sanders off to the NFL, Coach Prime is now evaluating Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and blue-chip freshman Julian 'JuJu' Lewis.
But former Alabama standout and ex-Buffalo Bills scout Gerald 'Smoke' Dixon has a word of caution — one that could shape Colorado's future and keep the Buffs' rebuild on course.
Deion Sanders' quarterback decision could shape
Colorado Buffaloes
' long-term future
Gerald 'Smoke' Dixon knows what success looks like at both the collegiate and professional levels. As a four-year starter at Alabama and a former NFL scout with the Buffalo Bills, Dixon has seen how quickly programs can shift — for better or worse.
Now, as Colorado enters its next phase under Deion Sanders, he's weighing in with advice only someone with his experience can give.
While speaking on the Ultimate College Football Show by 24/7Sports, Dixon weighed in on Colorado's quarterback competition, which features experienced Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and highly touted freshman Julian Lewis. His recommendation? A two-quarterback system — but with clear expectations and foresight.

"You can't leave a four-star, talented player like JuJu Lewis on the sideline all season, and you can't play Kaidon all year, just because I think he's gonna get banged up," Dixon explained. "When you have a young guy like JuJu, if you keep him on the sideline for a long time, I only know one place where he's going to end up: the transfer portal."
Dixon's comments come as Colorado looks to build on a surprising 9-4 season in 2024, a run that helped vault Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders into the NFL.
Yet despite the Buffs' success, protecting the quarterback remains a concern — Shedeur was sacked 42 times last year, and Coach Prime has called on his offensive line to step up in 2025.
With high-profile recruits and transfer talent at his disposal,
Deion Sanders
has the pieces to make Colorado a contender. But as Dixon warns, keeping a young star like Julian Lewis engaged might be just as important as naming a starter. The wrong decision could send the Buffs' future walking.

Another said it was 'next level,' while a third commented that the 'art piece' was 'epic'. 'Memories fade…skin lives forever…,' said one more fan, and another wrote 'never forget your roots.' NFL's social justice campaign enters sixth year with refreshed messaging
The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will open the season on September 4 against the Dallas Cowboys with 'Choose Love' in their end zone. (Image Credit: X) For the sixth straight season, the NFL will feature on-field social justice messages at all games. Each of the league's 32 teams will display one of four approved slogans - 'End Racism', 'Stop Hate', 'Choose Love' or 'Inspire Change' - in one end zone during home games. The opposite end zone will read 'It Takes All of Us' at every game. The only change from 2024 is that 'Inspire Change' replaces 'Vote.' International games will continue to feature 'End Racism' and 'It Takes All of Us' in the back of both end zones. These messages are part of the league's broader cause campaigns, including Salute to Service and Crucial Catch, which will appear during select weeks. Talking to The The Associated Press, Anna Isaacson, the NFL's senior vice president of social responsibility, emphasised the league's commitment to amplifying player voices and fostering unity, noting that football has long brought people from diverse backgrounds together to enjoy America's most popular sport. The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will open the season on September 4 against the Dallas Cowboys with 'Choose Love' in their end zone. They will rotate all four messages during the season. 'Choose Love,' introduced in 2022, gained prominence after the Buffalo supermarket shooting that killed 10 people and has since been widely embraced as a message of healing and will again be allowed to display one of five messages - including 'It Takes All of Us' - on helmet decals. Since launching the Inspire Change initiative in 2017, the NFL has contributed over $460 million to grant partners and grassroots organisations. The league views these combined on-field and off-field efforts as a serious responsibility to promote unity and drive positive community impact.

Jayden Daniels' baby moment during Commanders practice proves he's not quite ready for dad duties yet (Instagram/Commanders and Imagn Images) Jayden Daniels may have already risen in the NFL spotlight, but the Washington Commanders star just proved there's one area where he's hilariously out of his depth—holding babies. The reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, who carried his team all the way to the NFC Championship Game in his debut season, brought long-lost hope to a fan base still healing from the Dan Snyder era. But when it comes to childcare, the 24-year-old quarterback still has some learning to do. Jayden Daniels entertains fans with awkward baby moment Known for his calm composure in high-pressure games, Jayden Daniels looked anything but comfortable when handed teammate Mike Sainristil's nearly 14-month-old daughter, Summer. The Heisman Trophy winner held her at arm's length like an alien life form, clearly unsure of his next move. His discomfort didn't go unnoticed, as he quickly returned Summer to her mom with the kind of speed Commanders fans usually see on his scrambles. The Commanders' official Instagram had fun with the moment, captioning it: 'Uncle Jayden reporting for duty 🫡.' Daniels, ever the good sport, smiled throughout the clip—though it's safe to say he's not ready for fatherhood just yet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50!
