Jake White celebrates Bulls' comeback URC quarter-final victory and valuable lessons learned against Edinburgh
Bulls No 8 Cameron Hanekom scores the first try against Edinburgh after slicing through a gap in the defence during their quarter-final clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. Image: BackpagePix Bulls director of rugby Jake White praised his team's fighting spirit after their comeback win over Edinburgh in Pretoria on Saturday to secure a home semi-final in the United Rugby Championship (URC). Having trailed their Scottish visitors 21-8 at a stage after an early yellow card, the Bulls mounted a superb fightback before and after halftime that blew the opposition out of the water to secure the victory at Loftus Versfeld. They scored six brilliant tries and the interplay between the backs and forwards was outstanding for most of them. Although they leaked five tries, of which at least two were questionable, their defensive effort in the final 20 minutes will give them plenty of confidence heading into the next match. The Vodacom @BlueBullsRugby charged home in the Quarter-Final 😤 Can they keep the momentum up in their home Semi-Final next weekend? #BKTURC #URC | #BULvEDI — BKT United Rugby Championship (URC) (@URCOfficial) May 31, 2025 Video Player is loading. He lamented their yellow cards especially, although he believes they might have been a bit harsh. 'We learned our lessons from the last time we played them in Edinburgh,' White said. 'We were 24-7 down and today 21-8 down. Not many teams would come back in a quarter-final when you are down by that much and win it as convincingly as we did at the end. One lesson we can't ignore is that we can't play with 14 men and give them two tries while down and think you can always come back and win. 'I am just very happy that there was the fight and resilience and learning. I always talk about being in this competition and learning from what happened previously. We were down but got a (winning) result. Whereas the last time we played them, we didn't.' According to White, people think the team placed seventh should automatically lose to the team that finishes second. He made reference to Leinster losing to Scarlets and his side during the round-robin season and being pushed by the same Scarlets in their quarter-final on Saturday evening. The Bulls mentor added that some choice words went down from the coaching booth to the field when they were so far behind. 'A couple of choice words were said. I can't say that on national TV,' he laughingly said. 'But what are you going to do? You can't shout and scream and behave like a lunatic up there. I just had confidence that it was an 80-minute game and although they had a fast start, going from 21-8 to 21-18 in that space must've given the guys belief that we learned from last time.' Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt said they knew the first 20 minutes were going to be vital and he was happy with how they reacted from the first whistle.

Springbok flyer's untimely death has fans gasping
Former Springbok Cornal Hendricks, who was capped 12 times, has died aged 37 after a heart attack. Tributes flowed on X @JesseKriel15 You will be missed my brother! Fly high @CornalHendricks @haribaldijones He ran the best inside lines because he committed full on; always looked like was falling downhill, towards the promised land. Elite finisher from the Boland: Bok Cornal Hendricks will stay in our hearts and his family in our minds. @samhendricksZA Ai chommie.... @CornalHendricks When all we can say is #RIPCornalHendricks The strongest person on and off the field. Passion always and so much love for your family and where you came from. Rest well. ️ @AnalystGus Terribly sad to hear of the passing of Cornal Hendricks at 37 years old. A true fighter, who retired at 27 due to a heart condition that cut his Springbok career short. Only to emerge in the professional scene once again in his 30s, playing for the Bulls, Boland & SA 'A'. @francisaac87 Life isn't fair most of the time, but that didn't stop Cornal Hendricks from keep going. He refused to give up whenever a new obstacle arose and went as far to become a Springbok, a Bulls, a fan favourite and a guiding light for others. May his legacy live on️. @nickbimages Saddened to learn of the death of former @BlueBullsRugby and @Springboks back Cornal Hendricks' at the age of 37. Known for always playing with a smile on his face, Cornal also represented South Africa in Sevens, appearing for the @Blitzboks between 2011 and 2014.R.I.P Cornal. @Kookie_Kuhle Terrible to hear the news about Cornal Hendricks! One the best finishers we have produced in this country, loved his stint at centre for the Bulls just after Covid. Hell of a guy off the field as well️. @JLyall93 Interviewed Cornal Hendricks during his comeback in 2019; raised by an astonishing mum in poverty most of us can't fathom, he radiated positivity and kindness, and did masses for his people. 'I want to be that light in our dark communities.' From Wellington to the world. RIP. @will_owen9 Horrible news about Cornal Hendricks. A life and a rugby career cut drastically short. Ludicrously quick and translated his skill set seamlessly from 7s to 15s. In his prime he was the sort of player you hated to see on opposition team sheets, but loved to watch as a neutral. RIP @Yuben_za RIP Cornel Hendricks, will never forget the try against the All Blacks. @rekoil92 RIP CORNAL HENDRICKS. You will be missed dearly. One of our most loved players. Amazing story behind it as well. @Springboks, @BlueBullsRugby, cheetahs and Boland lost a giant. Rus sag Oom CORNAL @DennisCruywagen Rest in Peace, Cornal Hendricks. You were a shining example of a working class young man who did not have the benefit of a former Model C school rugby scholarship but who reached the very top, took care of his family and never forget where your roots were. Live scoring: Bulls v Glasgow Warriors
The Bulls celebrate. Image: @BlueBullsRugby. Home » URC | Live scoring: Bulls v Glasgow Warriors The Bulls celebrate. Image: @BlueBullsRugby. The URC battle between the Bulls and second-placed Glasgow Warriors is expected to be a humdinger given how closely matched the teams are on the table and in terms of their performances this season, with only four log points separating them and both sides being tied on 11 victories in their 15 matches to date. The men from Pretoria can still finish in the top two on the log, should they bag a few good results in their remaining matches, starting in Glasgow. Glasgow Warriors v Bulls Date: Friday, 25 AprilVenue: Scotstoun Stadium, GlasgowSA Time: 20:35Referee: Andrew Brace TV: SuperSport Bulls: 15 Devon Williams, 14 Canan Moodie, 13 David Kriel, 12 Harold Vorster, 11 Sebastian de Klerk, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Embrose Papier, 8 Marco van Staden, 7 Ruan Nortje (captain), 6 Jannes Kirsten, 5 JF van Heerden, 4 Cobus Wiese, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Johann Grobbelaar, 1 Jan-hendrik Wessels. Replacements: 16 Akker van der Merwe, 17 Simphiwe Matanzima, 18 Mornay Smith, 19 Jacobus Grobler, 20 Marcell Coetzee, 21 Keagan Johannes, 22 Willie le Roux, 23 Stedman Gans. Spicing up the clash, memories of the Bulls' heart-breaking 21-16 defeat in last year's Grand Final in Pretoria will still be fresh in their minds – a result they will be determined to avenge. As if that were not enough, second place on the table will be at stake, as a victory for the Bulls, if they win with a bonus point and deny the Warriors a point will see them leapfrog the hosts on the table. While the Glasgow Warriors will do their utmost to make the most of their home ground advantage – especially with the team on a good run this season with only one defeat suffered at the Scotstoun Stadium in the competition so far. Adding to the visitors' motivation, they will enter the match with confidence after making history with a 16-13 victory against Munster in Limerick last week and winning five of their last six matches in the showpiece. All this combined is expected to result in a battle of epic proportions. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
