Gayle King Shares What Best Friend Oprah Winfrey Told Her After Controversial Blue Origin Space Flight

Gayle King always has the support of her best friend Oprah Winfrey — even after returning to Earth from her all-female space flight. The CBS Mornings anchor, 70, revealed what the legendary media mogul, who notably got emotional while watching King blast off to space on April 14, told her as soon as she completed her Blue Origin flight. 'She was so welled up [with tears],' King recalled in an interview with E! News at the Time100 Gala in New York City on Thursday, April 24, adding, 'I know she said at one point [that] she was proud of me.' She added that people had seen Winfrey crying on the broadcast and 'said, 'Oh, she's so worried. She thinks something's gonna happen,' ' but that wasn't further from the truth. 'This is the thing, she always said I was gonna be okay. And Oprah knows things,' she jokingly added. King instantly went viral after she looked nervous while walking on the platform and ringing the bell just before the flight. She shared in a press conference back on Earth that she made that face because she 'was so afraid' at 'that moment.' But reflecting on the 11-minute trip, King later said, "I really am proud of me because I never in a gazillion years thought I could do this." The journalist was previously married to William Bumpus from 1982 to 1993, and they share daughter Kirby Bumpus, 38, and son William Bumpus Jr., 37. Since their split, she has been looking for romance, sharing on The Tamron Hall Show that she was open to dating someone younger,' but not 'somebody I could have given birth to.' Miley Cyrus' Brother Roasts Katy Perry's ‘Dying' Career

Another celeb has hopped onboard the Katy Perry hate train. Trace Cyrus joined a slew of VIPs slamming Perry for her awkward space flight and pleading with her team to give it a rest already. The musician launched into an expletive-filled rant Friday and accused Perry of copying his sister's every move. 'I first knew Katy Perry and her team were lame as f--- when her career was first dying and they were like 'Hmmm, what can we do? What worked for Miley?'' he scoffed in an X video. ''She cut her hair off and it broke the internet,'' he continued, mimicking Perry's team. ''And everybody freaked out. And she bleached it blonde. We should do that with you, Katy.'' Cyrus' roast came only days after Perry returned safely from a whopping 11-minute space flight in Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket. Almost immediately after, a seemingly never-ending outpouring of hatred came from actors, singers, and fans (or ex-fans, now). Olivia Munn, Jessica Chastain, Olivia Wilde, Emily Ratajkowski, and even corporations like Wendy's piled on their revulsion. They joked about sending her back, called the first all-female space mission a 'dumb stunt,' and made savage jabs about Perry's outfit on social media. Chastain even reposted The Guardian's essay titled 'The Blue Origin Flight Showcased the Utter Defeat of American Feminism.' Then Cyrus made his disgust loud and clear when he mocked Perry for her flopped career and insinuated she was a Miley wannabe. ''You're gonna do exactly what the f--- Miley did and blow up,'' he said, imitating Perry's team. 'Guess what? It didn't f-----g work.' Perry ripped off Miley time and time again, he said, copying her haircuts, music choices, and singer collabs. 'And then they just tried some EDM songs or some s--- because EDM's hot,' he said, repeating: 'Didn't f---ing work.' But, according to Cyrus, Perry's team's last move was the most foolish yet. ''Now we're gonna send your ass to space,'' he said, beginning to yell. 'Didn't f---ing work! It's not working, it's backfired, stop!' Cyrus captioned his vid: 'Nice try Katy... it didn't work. Back to the drawing board,' with a crying emoji. Perry's singing career has stagnated in recent years, but it hasn't been until this week that even fellow celebs have turned against her—minus billionaire Bezos and his fiancée, of course.

Gayle King on 'disrespectful' space flight backlash, celebrity friends 'throwing shade'

Gayle King on 'disrespectful' space flight backlash, celebrity friends 'throwing shade' Show Caption Hide Caption Watch zero gravity inside Blue Origin space flight with Katy Perry Katy Perry, Gayle King and four other women experienced zero gravity as they reached the edge of space on Blue Origin. Gayle King is hitting back against criticism of her brief trip to space. In an interview with "Extra," the "CBS Mornings" anchor, who blasted off Monday for a celebrity-studded space mission sponsored by the Jeff-Bezos-backed exploration company Blue Origin, said critics have merely not done enough research. "I wish people would do more due diligence," she said. "And then my question is, 'Have y'all been to space?' Go to space or go to Blue Origin and see what they do and then come back and say, 'This is a terrible thing.'" The mission, which saw pop star Katy Perry and Bezos' fiancé Lauren Sánchez join King and three others for the first all-female flight to space in decades, was marketed as a feminist win and a tribute to life on earth. Stars in space, critics on Earth: Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Wilde speak out Critics, including several celebrities, however, chided the female "astronauts" for aiding what they saw as a marketing play for Blue Origin's expensive flights to space and helping to put an activist sheen on a company that contributes to Earth's pollution. King said she herself might have once been among those critics. We've got today's buzz: Sign up for USA TODAY's Everyone's Talking newsletter for more trending topics. Gayle King on her now-viral expression ahead of Blue Origin Flight: 'I was so afraid' "I think it's good that we can really address it … because I was one of those people before I went on this flight and before I became educated," she said, adding that Blue Origin's "intention" is more noble than she thought. "To figure out a way to harness the waste here and put it in space to make the Earth a better place," King said, describing her view of Blue Origin's mission. "Every time a flight goes up, they get some type of information that can be used for something else." Citing GPS systems and satellites, King heralded Blue Origin as helping advance the everyday uses of space technology that humans already rely on. Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez hit back at Blue Origin backlash After touching back down on Earth, both Perry and Sánchez said their view of the planet from space helped them to feel more grateful for it, with Perry even kissing the ground when she exited the capsule. The comments quickly became fodder for critics who pointed out that space flights can contribute to pollution and that Bezos, also the founder of Amazon, has a large negative environmental footprint. Some detractors also critiqued the length of the flight, characterizing the 11-minute jaunt as more of a stunt than a true mission for discovery. "It's so much money to go to space," actress Olivia Munn said in an appearance on the "Today" show earlier this month. "There's a lot of people who can't even afford eggs … I think it's a bit gluttonous. "Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind," said the actress, who was serving as a guest host of the show alongside Jenna Bush Hager. "What are they going to do up there that has made it better for us down here?" King scoffed at those criticisms as well, saying, "You never see a man, a male astronaut, who's going up in space and they say, 'Oh, he took a ride.' It's always referred to as a flight or a journey, so I feel that's a little disrespectful to what the mission was and the work that Blue Origin does." Sánchez echoed that sentiment in a press conference following the mission, telling People, "Anybody that's criticizing it doesn't really understand what is happening here." "I get really fired up," Sánchez added. "I would love to have them come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that don't just work here, but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle. They love their work and they love the mission and it's a big deal for them." "I know there are cranky Yankees, I know there are some haters, but I'm not gonna let people steal my joy and steal the joy of what we did or what we accomplished that day," King said. "I'm just not going to let it in. I'm not. And these are some of my friends that are throwing shade!"
